Remembering Disneyland: A day at Disneyland in 1987

  • I’m not sure how much money Disney is investing into time travel, but I hope it’s a lot! Imagine being able to visit Disneyland from any era… for a service fee on Genie+! While I can’t help you with time travel, I can offer the next best thing. I got my first video camera in 1986, but I did most of my Disneyland recording in 1987 and that’s what this video focuses on (actually there is one clip from 1986. Let’s see who can figure it out). A day at Disneyland in 1987. We are going to see many things that exist only in our memories: Skyway, PeopleMover, Mission to Mars, America Sings, Captain EO, Fort Wilderness and many more. I did my best to clean up the videos for your best enjoyment, so let’s all gather just inside the turnstiles and recover from the shock of paying $28 to get in! We have a full day so let’s get going!

I have no idea how my Dad did it. We left as a family from San Diego, spent the whole day at Disneyland, then after the fireworks, my good Pops would drive us all the way back home without complaining. They must have had good coffee back then. 👍thank you for the video.

I once went with my stepson and we were there at rope drop and left when the parked closed at 11:00. Tomorrowland is a Zombieland of Pixar attractions. They ruined the Matterhorn and no longer feels the same, looks the same, or sounds the same. Individual rides have been tweaked with PC garbage and movie overlays. No, Walt's Park is all but gone. The Iger era leaves near nothing intact. Thanks so much for this, I grew up at Disneyland in the 70s and 80s and it truly was a magical place. People appreciated so much more back then, before the internet, cell phones and social media torched everything and made people bitter and angry and divisive. Patriotism and goodwill prevailed. A pineapple whip, a stop in the magic shop, normal families and a late night ride on the train when you had the whole car to yourself! Those were the days, my friend!!

Oh, the wave of nostalgia I have just now. You nailed it. Just such a simpler time when Disney was so much more enjoyable and easier to navigate. You could be spontaneous and never had to be anywhere at a certain time, always checking the time and having to plan on how to get there through the crowds. I remember riding the train late one night after being in the park since opening and being so tired that I rode the train three times around the park. Thanks for watching. Lots more memories on my channel so I would encourage you to check it out.

If that even makes sense. I think it was all equal opportunity back then. No lightning lane no fast pass, you just got in line and waited with everybody else. @@550Deano Yes, I worked for Disney imagineering in the early '90s. Nothing spectacular, I was in the security department. 1984 I used to go to Disneyland after college classes with my buddies 3 or 4 days a week; nothing else to do but go to the beach or Disneyland, (& most of us lived by the beach so that was not a thrill). Anyway, in '84 it would have been to cool to have had a VHS camera but they were too expensive. No image stabilization, crappy lens, no performance in low light, & truly low resolution. Ha! But too cool in '84. The best rides were Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. Long lines also at Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain Railroad, and the Matterhorn Bobsleds. No toon town back then but we did have some of the lamest rides ever dating from the late '50s in Tomorrowland. There was one where you moved through grainy black and white projected photos taken through electron microscopes. The narration was some dull guy telling you that you're shrinking down to the size of an atom. And then it was over! Woohoo! Excitement and then some! Glad you showed the PeopleMover. It was so fun on the days it wasn't actually broken down. Actually, if you were never on the PeopleMover when it broke down then you'd never really "done" Disneyland. My one piece of wisdom about enjoying Disneyland: go to whatever has the shortest line no matter what it is - it'll still be fun and that way you'll spend all day on rides and not in lines.

What I have tried to do with all my videos is enhance these old tapes the best I can to bring out the best. Thank you for watching!

I worked at the French Market and Hungry Bear Restaurant at that time. We may have crossed paths at some point.

This is the sweet spot of Tomorrow Land - must be 4x as many attractions compared to now.

You're absolutely right. As I was editing that video I was just amazed at how many more attractions were there back then compared to now. Tomorrowland needs a shutdown / overhaul ASAP

Great video! What is it with Dads filming Big Thunder Railroad? 😂My Dad also filmed the ride and I used to watch it over and over as a kid. Also, seeing Fort Wilderness again was great! My first trip to D-land was in 1986, so this was very special. Thank you!

I used to video my trips to Disneyland so that when I wanted to experience it I just had to pop in a video tape. Who knew that I was recording so much that would disappear? So very pleased that you enjoyed the video!

Disneyland good old days when the price of admission is only $28.00. Good times.

Oh how I miss those days… I actually had my Gradnite at Disneyland in ‘87… Not even sure if they do that anymore? So much fun.. rides to ourselves.. we had to get dressed up.. tons of famous bands on different stages ( when music was music) Nothing like the 80’s..🥲

My grad night was 1977 and had a blast. I wore a leisure suit! 😀 Disney still does Grad Nite, but at DCA, not Disneyland.
