      One problem with the "must partner with a local company" aspect is that it isn't just "the way it works there". Every Chinese company has to fall under the authority of China's government. Meaning must hand over any data it asks for, must create whatever propaganda it asks for, etc. Their market capture of the gaming industry through their companies very much results in pro-China and anti-"western" messaging in their games.

    • @dothex

      @Vaeldarg you forgot the most important part about operating in china.. If you have a company in china, then all your profits are property of the CCP. No matter what ANYONE says, in China YOU do not OWN your company in any way, shape or form. It is now owned by the communist party of China.
      You can only operate in China under their iron fist rules, point blank period.
      So F unity... its Unreal Engine for life!

      I suspect the real reason its not in western Unity isn't so much code (All the information is out there in the academic research, theres no great secrets here) but patents. The thing is, china doesnt really *do* software patents, thats a western thing. The end result is you can add all that stuff into chinese unity, but it cant be added into western unity. Because Epic cant sue in china, but it sure as hell can in the US and Europe.

    • @Alexander_Grant
      @Alexander_Grant 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@shayneoneill1506 That is something China gets right. Patents are one of the worst things we have. Completely stifles innovation and competition, especially since the patents these companies have are all downstream from research done by academics that get paid next to nothing. I'm reminded of the Bandai Namco patent on loading screen mini-games. The entire system needs to be reworked or just gutted.

    Gotta love how a lot of people in the comments are quick to jump at the idea chinese Unity devs might be violating Epic's copyright and not, you know, they have talented (and dedicated) enough developers working for a company (with a seemingly more focused vision than western Unity) that sees a potential for developing similar tools for such a large market as China because, apparently, Epic cracked the ONLY way to implement such tools on an engine and it's impossible for others to do so without copyright violations involved... especially in *shudders* China.
    I mean, if I'm proven wrong, so be it, but when it involves companies as big as these ones, I just doubt copyright infringement can go unnoticed.

      Again, if tech was their priority, I am pretty sure they will be able to do legal walk-around or even come with something new. The company just seems to want to go easy path last years, so there is huge chance, they went easy path in this features too.
      And sure, China has long history of innovation and no evidence of copying western products.

    • @DireSwift

      They no doubt have talented and dedicated devs, nobody thinks they are a bunch of cavemen banging on keyboards with rocks and copy pasting code. Utilizing others work doesn't contradict that and they work in a system that encourages that as they are their own country with their own laws so it's perfectly legal there. Of course they will integrate features that would get them sued to oblivion if done outside of China.

      @@vin7524 Feel free to correct me if I'm not getting this correctly, but AFAIK, "taking" a feature from one piece of software to another is not as simple as Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V a piece of code. There's a lot involved to just make it work, much less work well. If we were talking about a brand new engine that came out of nowhere, fine. But we are talking about feature implemented on a fork of Unity which works pretty differently to Unreal.
      At worst, this could be "reverse engineering" of those features which, in that case, it would be a perfectly legitimate development.
      To me, it seems quite evident that Unity China is following a bery different work ethic that main Unity, so I don't think this would be far fetched.

    • @vin7524
      @vin7524 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Diegorskysp17 Of course they have slightly different base that to implement it on. But both are working with same principles and are even written in same language. You still can steal feature's source code by decoupling it from its original base and align it to another one. It does not need to be 1:1 copy-paste. I guess exact principles for realisation has been patented and not general principle (maybe you will prove me wrong if you are familiar in this field and find proof it is not).
      And statement that "reverse engineering" is perfectly legitimate is crazy. Also they even do not need to bother with reverse engineering as they have full source code available on github.

    • @MorbidEel
      @MorbidEel 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@eng3d Their only incentive for creating a better platform is having a strong enough competitor. Who do you think those are? Look at what happened with CPUs when AMD finally came out with Ryzen versus before when it was basically all Intel.
      On the other hand for the companies that make games they can either save money by getting the same work done with fewer workers or getting more work done with the same amount of workers. Those are very tangible motives.
      For Unity it would be much harder to prove that any particular feature will earn them more money. They can't implement it and then go "hey we are going to charge you more money now that Unity has this feature".
