Greetings, my name is Nnamso. A Nigerian. I'm a school proprietor. I wish to say that, I have been enjoying your teachings regarding phonics awareness... Keep it up?
Wow, you are awesome!!! You are really helping me big time, as I am a first-year teacher in first grade; I should have been watching you since August! Please keep posting instructional example videos like this, it is super helpful and motivating of what I can do to teach and have fun while teaching! Thank you!!!! ✨🤍😃
I have your Phonics Poem Bundle and your Phonics Game Bundle. They are both AMAZING to use in my classroom for phonics instruction!!! They definitely keep my students engaged! Thanks for sharing! I love your weekly videos! They inspire me!
Thank you so much for posting this!! Our daughter is a fast learner and I really have wanted to get her excited about reading / writing and phonics and this has some awesome concepts and an easy consistent lesson plan, thank you thank you!
Another thing I do when teaching phonics with my students is we will have an anchor chart paper up with whatever we are working on, example Sl blend...then as my students are reading independently or working in reading groups if they find a word that matches the specific week skill they write it on the anchor chart (as long as that word is not already on the list). At the end of the week we read all the words they found.
Good morning. Thank you for some good, concrete examples of explicit phonics instruction ideas. Many of my students struggle with blending so this post is a big help to me. Thank you once again.☺
Thanks, very interesting. You explain everything based on your own experiences and everyday activities and techniques in the classroom. I'm an ESL teacher and I think that teaching reading to children has a whole world of methodology that applies to it just like ESL and it also takes experience to be able to do it well.
Thank you so much your effort is really appreciated Could you please put the videos in the playlist in the correct order according to the steps of teaching phonics
Your instruction example needs a group dynamic. Do you drill the group with repetition? Phonics is oral. You might try using ladders to transition the kids from consonant sounds to consonant vowel blends. This makes the transition to cvc words much easier.
Thank you so much for the explanation of how you taught explicit phonics for first graders! I have your Phonics games, and this makes so much sense. I will be getting the poems next! Thanks again!!!! :)
What are your thoughts on teaching the 6 syllable types? I teach first and we are revamping our phonics instruction. We use lessons based on Orton Gillingham techniques and teach the rules of syllables - closed syllables, open syllables, magic e, soldier rule, long spelling after short vowels, etc. I've got your poems and your print and play phonics games. They are great! Thanks for the video!
Hi Susan, when you introduce a new skill, like blends, do you focus on only one a day or all of them at once? For example, in Fundations, we learned 5 digraphs..would practice all 5 each day, or one each day? Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing! When teaching short and long vowel sounds, do you spend a whole week on the same sound(ie. a week on short e)? or cover all short vowel sounds in the week?
Thank you for sharing! Does the "Phonics Games for 1st Grade: Print, Play, LEARN!" cover the same phonics patterns in your "Phonics Poems for Grades K-2"?
Hi Lori! Yes the games all cover the same skills as the poems but there are many more poems because they focus on specific patterns. For example the games cover short vowel CVC words (most games include at least 2 vowels being reviewed) but for the poems there are tons of different CVC patterns and word families which are reviewed (-ad, -ig, op, -ot, etc.) as well as some poems with a variety of CVC (a) words. I hope that helps!
So in one of your videos you gave a helpful hint of ai is read as long a. Would you mind sharing other clues like this? I'm a parent and want to help my daughter that's in second grade to read this summer and any other tips would be so greatly appreciated
This was a much needed video for me and my students! I teach third grade, however there are many students who are significantly behind in phonics. My school does not offer a phonics curriculum for third grade. What would you recommend for a scope and sequence?
Do you think it would be appropriate to add the phonemes from the previous week to the games? For example on the roll and color game, add a 2 reviews sounds to 4 new sound examples? if not, how do you reinforce their prior learning? Thanks!
Hello I just subscribed to your website and I was wondering if the phonics poems you created are on there and if so where they're located I've been looking for them but can't seem to find them
Where can I find a list of your scope and sequence you mention here? I am homeschooling my K son and and not sure where to find the scope and sequence.
This is an amazing video and just what i was looking for. You mentioned a template to make the phonics blending cards, do you have that for sale by chance?
Hi Melissa! I don't have the template for sale, no. I simply open a powerpoint and insert a table with about 10 boxes in it. That way I can type in whatever sounds/flash cards I need! The free s-blends cards are found here though: drive.google.com/file/d/0B9daiC_aR38NRFNWbmo4VjNMNDQ/view
So based on your experience, which Phonics Program did you like best in public school? Our school is looking for something good since many students are behind due to the pandemic.
....And homework for Susan would be to work on her "UP-SPEAK" tendencies (the tail end of her sentences all go UP...as if a question. A bad habit 2nd only to VOCAL-FRY (the raking of the vocal chords at the tail end of words).
Hi Dawn! I don't have a scope and sequence for kindergarten specifically. I do have one that I used in 1st grade if you want to email me (susanjonesteaching@gmail.com) I can share that with you! I can tell you that in kinder, we spent many weeks at the beginning of the year focusing just on individual letter sounds, then many more weeks blending CVC words before learning digraphs! If you google "kindergarten phonics scope and sequence" there are quite a few online you may want to pull from!
English is my second language. I don’t understand all the analyzing and picking apart all the details . Beside knowing the vowels are moved one vowel ahead in Dutch, I was always just told that English doesn’t make any sense! That meant learning how to write and memorize the spelling. There is no logical explanation for the difference in pronunciation between tough, though and through. I learned English as a child through games, songs and poems. Rhythm and rhyme is so important for a child under 9. I spell better than the average American without ever being exposed to phonics or any reading specialist. Please teach students about nature, culture and art instead of boring them to tears with fragments when they are still believing in Santa Claus. It’s ok in high school to analyze. Just Not in elementary school. Teach them to LOVE language through stories! And don’t dumb it down. Education is about reaching for the sky!
I'm not sure I see the magic. The sound of "P" is 'p-eh' (audible) the long sound of "A" is 'ahhh"(audible) the audible sound of L is simply "lll" The audible the sound of S is "sssss" Lets put the sounds together now: l - a - p is lap, put an an s in front now kids its "slap" Next lets try mixing them up now say "Pal" lets put the s on the end: say Pals next lets try this L-A-P again with an s on the end. Too much on theory anyone can teach a kid to read and write with few exceptions - it's simple - kids are pre-wired to learn easily. Teaching is a trade, not a profession. I know this because I tutored kids who had poor teachers. I wasn't trained but they were - I did better than they did by the kids evaluations (a little more advanced - math through calculus as well as HS chemistry and physics - oh I was only a volunteer - no pay.
Thank you so much. I just discovered your amazing clear videos. I teach a playgroup in my very disadvantaged community. The learners have to learn English, a completely new language. So your videos are very helpful. I am unable to buy online. How can you help me buy some of those literacy tools. Also your email address would be useful to me. You are God send to me. Blessed to bless others

Thank you so much. It’s amazing to see how we still have teachers who have a true passion for teaching kids.

It's always nice to see how someone else does things. Can't wait to switch it up a bit! Great video!
I have your Phonics Poem Bundle and your Phonics Game Bundle. They are both AMAZING to use in my classroom for phonics instruction!!! They definitely keep my students engaged! Thanks for sharing! I love your weekly videos! They inspire me!

Love this idea!! Thank you for sharing Kristin!
I love your videos they are so helpful. I'm a parent trying to help my struggling 2nd grader. He struggles with reading and phonics.
Would love to apply this to my own children. Thank you for the informative video!

Do you have a modified phonics routine for virtual learning?
Hi Susan, when you introduce a new skill, like blends, do you focus on only one a day or all of them at once? For example, in Fundations, we learned 5 digraphs..would practice all 5 each day, or one each day? Thanks!
Really amazing, thank you for share this video, exactly what I needed
Thank you very much for sharing the amazing techniques.
Great, thanks for sharing this video, I really needed this
Thank you- this helped with new ideas to implement with my class.
Thank you! Love your content!!! This was helpful

Wonderful video! It would be great if you could share your Grade 1 Scope and Sequence with us! Thank you!!!
Love this lesson! Where can I find the phonics assessment that you use?
Please share sequence of teaching phonics...the child knows about phonic word sound but what to teach next
So in one of your videos you gave a helpful hint of ai is read as long a. Would you mind sharing other clues like this? I'm a parent and want to help my daughter that's in second grade to read this summer and any other tips would be so greatly appreciated
I love the way this video starts, you are so cute
This was a much needed video for me and my students! I teach third grade, however there are many students who are significantly behind in phonics. My school does not offer a phonics curriculum for third grade. What would you recommend for a scope and sequence?
Hii! Im an ESL teacher in Spain. Do you think this method can be applied to non-native learners?
Thanks for your weekly routine for phonics.
Where can I get that quick phonics screener?
Hi Caren! You can actually just google "Quick Phonics Screener" and print out the PDF (both the student and teacher version!)
Do you think it would be appropriate to add the phonemes from the previous week to the games? For example on the roll and color game, add a 2 reviews sounds to 4 new sound examples? if not, how do you reinforce their prior learning? Thanks!
Amazing
thanks love it so simply done..
Hello please can you suggest pretest and post test for measuring grade 3 students' reading fluency using explicit and systematic phonics instructions
Hello I just subscribed to your website and I was wondering if the phonics poems you created are on there and if so where they're located I've been looking for them but can't seem to find them
Yes! You can find them in the SJT literacy club under the "bonuses" section.
These are great! Do you have a TPT pack like this for 1st graders who aren't quite reading yet (doing mostly CVC words)?
Very helpful!
I'm studying English as a second language and I'm trying to read but I am really struggling what do You recommend a way that I could read
Can you make a video maybe you have one already of an actual lesson with a student
Where can I find a list of your scope and sequence you mention here? I am homeschooling my K son and and not sure where to find the scope and sequence.
Hi, would you use your methods for teaching a dyslexic student? My son is in second grade. Thank you.
Do you also sell CVC cards similar to the free s-blend cards that are posted here? If so, where can I find them? Thank you!
Hello there, I am an adult and I want to learn how to pronounce any words. What do I do?
This is an amazing video and just what i was looking for. You mentioned a template to make the phonics blending cards, do you have that for sale by chance?
