    Just as our government contains both a House and a Senate, electoral votes allow for a demographic balancing of voting powers between states that indeed facilitates democracy. In order to account for voices of important states that are smaller in population, namely agricultural or industrial-focused ones, the electoral college must be kept in order to facilitate democracy.

    When we think about the rudimentary definition of what a truly democratic system is, it is almost always defined as a system where the people who are governed have a proportional say to how they are governed. The electoral college system is an excellent example of how while certain systems can seem 'democratic' in the mechanism of the voting, the system ultimately impedes more than facilitates democracy to a certain extent and is not able to fully reflect a purely democratic voting system.

    The fundamental baseline of democracy is based on the ability to directly elect a leader, and this is not the case with the electoral college

  • @rohithpadmanaban7925
    @rohithpadmanaban7925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The electoral college facilitates democracy because it encourages candidates to attempt to gain popularity/support and plurality of the states which contain larger amounts of voters.

  • @vanstoizie4904
    @vanstoizie4904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The electoral college impedes democracy by limiting the voting of districts and prioritizing states. The winner take all approach limits the voice of the people by reducing the outcome of elections to a singular person rather than awarding power proportionally. Because the peoples voice is undermined, democracy is impeded.

    The electoral college facilitates democracy because it prevents states with larger populations from becoming more powerful and having greater influence over the federal government than those with smaller populations. By citizens participating by voting in the general election, the people are given the power which the is then represented by their state’s electoral votes.
    Would this get the point?

    The electoral college does indeed impede the US democracy as it doesn't give a fair share of votes to citizens as the electoral college will only take a majority of votes, limiting people's freedom of speech.

    Actually, the South didn't become republican until around the time of George W. Bush's Election. The rumored party "flip" was actually just the south's values shifting from Democratic to Republican. Instead of judging people based off of race, they judged them based on character/values.
