    CTS-XHP rocks! As a custom knife maker, it's a favorite of mine! My Recon 1 is in S35VN and is a very bad boy. Is it a friendly camp knife for slicing onions and potatoes? No, it isn't...Can I build a shelter post haste, while a storm is brewing and a fire as well? Yes it will, every time, in a bad spot I can count on this knife.

  • @BlueWingedRino
    @BlueWingedRino 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Cold Steel used to be a good bit cheaper.
    My aus8 Recon1 tanto half serrated was 60 bucks and I got mine in 2013 also. I didn’t realize it was that much more expensive in Canada.
    I also got a spear blade used a while ago for 35 bucks so I consider myself lucky.
    Aus8 for me is a fine steel and I like it cause it is easy to sharpen up with an old grinder wheel I keep in my tool pouch.

    • @HardOnGearChannel
      @HardOnGearChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Compared to other brands with similar materials Cold Steels definitely seem a bit pricey these days... good find on that $35 super point though!
      I will buy a new S35vn Recon 1 at some point, but a price tag of $150-$160 CAD makes me hesitant.
      You’re right about that AUS 8... makes a great work knife steel if you know you’re going to dull it up often.

    • @HardOnGearChannel
      @HardOnGearChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never thought about using a grinder wheel either. Kinda funny, but probably pretty effective too.

    I bought the S35VN version of the Recon 1 to replace my Fantoni HB-01, because they are literally impossible to find since the company shut down in 2019. My HB-01 was severely damaged after it was abused one time too often and I decided to go for a similarly hefty knife that has a reputation of being an absolute work horse. I also wanted to go from an S30V steel to S35VN, because as you mentioned in the video they tend to be somewhat tougher.
    Thank you for the great review, the Recon 1 was more of a spur of the moment buy, but now I feel significantly better about my purchase.

    Great knife review. I have 10 quality knifes, 5 are Cold Steel. I've been looking at the Recon 1 for about a year now. All I need to do at this point is convince the wife. Finally found one at a store so I could actually play with it as apposed to buying online. At the Cold Steel website, they list a 5 & 1/2 inch blade as one of the options, "comes in 2 3 4 or 5 & 1/2". I'm curious about the longer blade option. Not sure if I want the longer blade but I want to hold one in my hand just to compare. I'm also curious about buying one on Amazon. Most everywhere they cost about $165, $150 at my knife store but $109 on Amazon. I'm worried about getting a counterfeit for that price on Amazon. I know that some have recieved counterfeits from ebay.

      Sorry for the late response. Did you end up picking one up?
      The XL version is definitely getting to the point of being TOO BIG for the vast, vast majority of people.
      I’d be nervous about the counterfeit issue as well. I have Amazon Prime and use the shit out of it, but I do try to support my local (even if that just means Canadian) knife stores when I can, even if I have to pay a couple of bucks more.

Its almost like is a clip point and a drop point had a baby. 🤣 I have not gotten the spear point for one reason. The spear point is not broad like on the Recon. So the grind is less gradual and I speculate that this will cause it not to slice as well. The clip point version is one of the best executions of a clip point i have seen. I have the Recon in clip point as well, but to me the code 4 has a nicer clip. I also have the AD10, Voyager, Spartan, and American Lawman and a few other cold steels, but guess what more oftern than not I reach for the code 4. It is smooth though if that bothers you. • @HardOnGearChannel
      @HardOnGearChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On your Recon 1? Strange their quality control is normal second to none. Many, if not all older design Tri-Ad lock knives are meant to be quite tight in the pivot (requiring an aggressive wrist flick to open) and certainly don’t fidget well. The SR1 Lite and AD10 (I assume) don’t even feel like the same locking system by comparison with how smooth they are.
      Mine has blade play because for 8 years it was my only good folder and I beat the living hell out of it in every way you shouldn’t.
      I can also tell you it was NEVER as tight after I disassembled and reassembled it for the first time. Whether that’s because the factory tolerances were so tight that I couldn’t get it back to perfection, or because I’m a total caveman with mechanical stuff, I couldn’t tell you.
      Not sure if any of that helps, but that’s what personal experience I have on that topic. Best of luck.

      I think you may be confusing Taiwan with China… The strength and political power of Taiwan’s manufacturing capability in LITERALLY what keeps China from invading them and starting a true WW3 (no free Taiwan = no global supply of electronic chips for cell phones, computers, vehicles, etc)
      Taiwan is a free, capitalist country and has some of the best manufacturing standards in the world and the quality control of Cold Steel’s Taiwan products have always been second-to-none compared to knife brands in their relative price range.
      HOWEVER, since cold steel has been under new ownership there are rumours that the quality control has shit the bed a little bit, so you could be experiencing a genuine manufacturing defect. My guess though, is that like most Recon 1s and Tri-Ad Lock knives-it’s just really stiff at first and you need to use it for a week or two to break it in. You may have to really drive your thumb into the lock mechanism to disengage it at first, but that might be all that’s going on.
      Best of luck and I hope it ends up being a great knife for you in the end.

      It's better to be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubts.

    there's play in your knife because you swapped out the pegs. switch them, they may look similar but they are different.

    The Cold Steel company was sold. And like all situations like this the quality has gone to hell. Cold Steel is finished as a company.
