Which is mainly because the financiers wanted to profit off cheap chinese products at the expense of the US manufacturing sector. However, as AI and robots continue to develop, and china's GDP per capita increases along with wages, manufacturing will return to the USA in full swing at some point in the not-so-distant future and then we'll both be great manufacturing powers.

However, shipping costs can be considerable for larger/heavy items, and especially moreso in the future as oil prices rise, and the economics of robotics will make more and more items more compelling to manufacture locally, so I think these factors will return manufacturing back to the usa to a significant degree. Manufacturing jobs have been on the rise in the USA since 2010 as China's GDP per capita, and wages, has been rising.

To maximize profits manufacturers will produce until marginal revenue equals marginal cost. There's no overcapacity because manufacturers would not produce additional units if marginal cost was greater than marginal revenue. Economics 101.

If China does so the USA would collapse from high inflation.

About 6 months ago Senator Marco Rubio of Florida lamented that if trends continued, in 5 years the US wouldn't be able "to sanction anyone". Genuine concern in his voice and facial expression. We can only hope that Rubio is correct.

Who would have thought... now I've bought a great smartphone from China, a cool waterfall filter for an aquarium, a powerful and surprisingly quiet compressor with many adjustments for the same aquarium... my orders from China are getting bigger and bigger and bigger... and how many jokes were there about Chinese quality before? But, this locomotive cannot be stopped! No, of course I will declare a trade war on the Chinese if they forge Niva, Vostok watches, Massandra wine or Armenian cognac...
Otherwise, they are doing what is for the benefit of the whole world and their country. I like it!

It is simple logic, if there is no order and demand then there is no trade. China is meeting US demand for cheap goods, and US needs cheap good to survive. This is simply trying to focus on China instead of US, US needs inflation, needs pay rise and a property collapse.
Solution to Federal deficit problem: Reduce Department of War budget from $880 billion dollars per year to $100 billion per year. And then rename the Department of War the Department of Homeland Defense.

IF Chinese manufacturers can match capacity 产能够盛，Chinese can buy 14 million EV in 2024, plus supplying to the rest of the world as top car exporter.

Frankly speaking, I don’t see a solution. Have you seen that more than 50% of items we buy from Amazon, including US brands, are made in China? The collapse of the US manufacturing is irreversible. US either sets trade barriers to protect Tesla or Tesla will loose the competition, at least at the economy car end

Which country has smarter people (on average)? China
Which people are more highly educated (on average) ? Chinese
Which country is focused on development for the betterment of its people and mankind? China.
Which country is focused to war and profit for its elites? USA.
Which country legalized government/political corruption? USA
Which country legalized fake news? USA
Which country likes to meddle in other countries affairs, invading other countries? USA.
Which country doesn't care about its own poor and homeless people? USA

There are many symptoms but only one reason, one single cause as to why the US cannot do what China does today. That reason is because of capitalism, that incentivises and rewards the maximisation of internal profits at any externalised cost to society, nation, world, which means from the minute the jet engine and shipping container was invented circa 1950 capitalism has been incentivising capitalists to bugger off abroad to cheaper nations in pursuit of lower costs of labor and materials which is why a third of the companies in China are European and a third are American. None of this is ever explained to western populations as god forbid that make them critical of capitalism.
The reason why America, and by extension the west cannot compete under capitalism today, is because of capitalism. This is called a systemic contradiction and when systems gather too many of them they rot and die from with, as western capitalism has been doing ever increasing for the last 70 years but you can only see these things in the rear view mirror and will only see them if you are not a wide eyed optimist quoting bullcrap like "but GDP is up as are stocks so all is well" as many centrists and right wingers do while ignoring the ever growing rust belts, tent cities, mass shootings and drug addictions at home, as their western allies suffer with similar abroad.

Terrible idea. With all due respect to Mr. Norton's analytical chops, as seen by his insights into the Chinese desire for sovereignty, he is a journalist and not of a technical background. Moreover, as he is not himself Chinese, it should not be assumed that his priorities are the same as that of China.
I love the way that America goes begging to China with cap in hand, like Oliver Twist asking for some more,... Only their way of asking is to make threats??? They really are so detached from the geopolitical landscape that they can't even see how ridiculous and impudent these spoilt child tactics are when faced with an adversary that is outgrowing their capacity to manipulate.
There is no stopping China at this point (excluding nuclear war). China is building relationships with other nations by investing in them while America still exerts is power over other nations, which the world is sick of. It’s the beginning of the end for American dominance.

When you know that the United Kingdom has built 27K wireless communication base stations, the entire United States has built 120K base stations, Shenzhen in China has built 22K wireless communication base stations, and all of China has built 2200K base stations, you will know that what socialism has brought to China is Freedom of communication.
When you experience the subway fare of 6 pounds in London, you will know the freedom of transportation that China's 0.5 pound fare brings to you.
What capitalist countries need is not sanctions, but a revolution. You need a revolution that truly brings benefits to the people, rather than bringing about ideologies (freedom, democracy). That would only make Europe and Americans more in need of another Renaissance and Enlightenment.
