  • Washington accuses China of producing too many goods and demands "free market" policies. But the US government is spending trillions on industrial policy to protect its own manufacturing sector. Ben Norton details the hypocrisy of the "overcapacity" allegations: the latest strategy in the US economic war on China.

@user-mq1no3cq8u We are in between two huge bodies of watter, our currency is the reserve currecy of the world... If we followed Reagan's advice and 'let those who produce keep more of what they produce' instead of destroying our curency advantage we would be fine.

If we were to discourage rent seaking and speculation it would deflate asset values but we could get on the right path soon... We *SHOULD* expand our advantage with industrial policy that includes debt reduction and the reduction of asset values... The US has long complained that China was giving it's self an unfair advantage with those policies...

There are many symptoms but only one reason, one single cause as to why the US cannot do what China does today. That reason is because of capitalism, that incentivises and rewards the maximisation of internal profits at any externalised cost to society, nation, world, which means from the minute the jet engine and shipping container was invented circa 1950 capitalism has been incentivising capitalists to bugger off abroad to cheaper nations in pursuit of lower costs of labor and materials which is why a third of the companies in China are European and a third are American. None of this is ever explained to western populations as god forbid that make them critical of capitalism.
The reason why America, and by extension the west cannot compete under capitalism today, is because of capitalism. This is called a systemic contradiction and when systems gather too many of them they rot and die from with, as western capitalism has been doing ever increasing for the last 70 years but you can only see these things in the rear view mirror and will only see them if you are not a wide eyed optimist quoting bullcrap like "but GDP is up as are stocks so all is well" as many centrists and right wingers do while ignoring the ever growing rust belts, tent cities, mass shootings and drug addictions at home, as their western allies suffer with similar abroad.
Welcome to late stage capitalism my friend, in a coma since 2008. This isn't yet the end of the wests time on top, but you can see it from here.

BEN NORTON is one of my Favorite Geo Political Analysist of all times. Would be a great pleasure to see that the CHINESE 🇨🇳 government absorb him as a special advisor on foreign trade policy and tactics on the Global Stage. A Clear Voice for Equality and Justice. A Beautiful Mind 👍👌🥰💚

Terrible idea. With all due respect to Mr. Norton's analytical chops, as seen by his insights into the Chinese desire for sovereignty, he is a journalist and not of a technical background. Moreover, as he is not himself Chinese, it should not be assumed that his priorities are the same as that of China.

I love the way that America goes begging to China with cap in hand, like Oliver Twist asking for some more,... Only their way of asking is to make threats??? They really are so detached from the geopolitical landscape that they can't even see how ridiculous and impudent these spoilt child tactics are when faced with an adversary that is outgrowing their capacity to manipulate.

There is no stopping China at this point (excluding nuclear war). China is building relationships with other nations by investing in them while America still exerts is power over other nations, which the world is sick of. It’s the beginning of the end for American dominance.

Even after nuclear war, China could probably develop in record time. Dunno about the US though.

China built metro systems in almost very big city and charges very low fare thus the workers can get to work cheaply and easily, that's a subsidize! Perfect American logic.

      this is socialism.
When you nationalize all the land in the country, and then distribute the land to unemployed workers and let them return to their villages to become farmers, you will know why there are not so many homeless people in China. This is socialism.
When you know that the United Kingdom has built 27K wireless communication base stations, the entire United States has built 120K base stations, Shenzhen in China has built 22K wireless communication base stations, and all of China has built 2200K base stations, you will know that what socialism has brought to China is Freedom of communication.
When you experience the subway fare of 6 pounds in London, you will know the freedom of transportation that China's 0.5 pound fare brings to you.
What capitalist countries need is not sanctions, but a revolution. You need a revolution that truly brings benefits to the people, rather than bringing about ideologies (freedom, democracy). That would only make Europe and Americans more in need of another Renaissance and Enlightenment.
