    Emily, if you read this, thanks for doing this! This is a great and really entertaining series because of you. It's been quite some time since I got my license and it's so much fun to see the learning curve we all have had. And many thanks to Richard for filming his work, of course, too! Really hoping we'll see all the progress till the exam.

    I wish I'd been taught by someone like you, Richard. I wasn't taught about open and closed junctions, "walking" and "jogging", etc. Even when training to be an instructor, I was still not taught about these things. Your pupils are fortunate to get someone such as you, Good luck to Emily. I'm sure she will learn quickly.

    Don't worry Emily (if you look at these comments), we all make mistakes. I remember driving the wrong way up a one-way street during the lesson before my test. Scared my instructor to death; then passed the test with only 2 minor faults 😂 You're doing really well overall. Keep up the good work!

    I feel so invested in Emily's journey. Looking forward to seeing her grow and develop her skills.
    I never realised how complex driving actually is and so many things that I take for granted after driving for many years, actually require lots of intuition and skill to do. When you explain it step by step it blows my mind what's involved.

    Richard, you should really consider teaming up with the BBC or another channel to produce driving safety video's to remind everyone to drive safely similar to the 'Green Cross Code man' or the Tufty Club. My British wife reminds me that her brother was a member of the Tufty Club in the 70's and 80's.

    Richard, your teaching is just excellent, it's a world away from when I got taught. I still like checking into your videos even after passing a few years ago and I try to watch your videos that aren't directly to do with passing the UK driving test as someone who is always looking to improve their driving after getting the pass and generally curious and interested in cars/driving. Seeing your teaching directly on actual lessons just proves more to me how much of a great driving education channel this is.

    This video (as all your other videos!)is a gem! Thank you, Richard...and Emily for agreeing to have your session on video. I've had 15 hours of lessons, can drive now on country roads when it's nearly empty 😒 but struggle with junctions etc... add to the fact that I never had that kind of detailed instruction. This video is extremely helpful to me right now, I’m currently at over 20+ hours of lessons with my driving test booked for November 15th but something I keep struggling at is moving off more quickly when I’m stopped/stationary at any point , only because I’m afraid If I try to move off too quickly I’ll stall but my instructor understands why I take my time to move off

    • @slayert0ny744
      @slayert0ny744 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm also currently on my lessons with a test booked soon, something my instructor taught me because i struggled with the same thing, especially on hills, is to watch the road ahead and treat it like a prepare to move off, so biting point before you can move so that it's just a little bit more when it's time to go

      I know this is months and months late but I just want to let you know that when I took my test, I was slow pulling away at a set of traffic lights because I thought I'd stalled and still only got a minor for it, stalling isn't an issue (nor is thinking you've done so!) unless you're downright dangerous and I doubt you're that. I hope your test went well!

    I noticed at the begining Emily was very wary of speeding up before changing up to 2nd gear, but then later she got it moving to change up, you said not so fast, but that showed me she was getting confidence in her ability to control the car more, but she did really well, also the junction where she was going to do it wrong for the camera, she stopped herself at the last minute, but she showed the confidence and ability to control the car again, I think she will be a fast learner, she listens and thinks.

  • @amd_93
    @amd_93 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This has been incredibly helpful for me. One of my biggest fears as a learner which has led to a lot of rushing, is that if I don’t have my clutch in as soon as I slow down; I’ll stall. (It comes from stalling on my first ever junction and being beeped at and then tailgated, although I’ve never stalled on the road since)- I first started learning in a 2005 Vauxhall Tigra which was much easier as you really could hear everything and you had to apply much more pressure to the pedals anyway, but I’ve now bought a 2023 Corsa which is much more sensitive and quiet so that fear of stalling at junctions has been super high and led to me going faster than I should. So being able to get a better gauge of how slow the car can go before the break is needed but also how slow it can go before the clutch is needed is really useful.

  • @andrewbush65
    @andrewbush65 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've started to use the phrase 'Manage/control your speed with the footbrake.' once the clutch is down approaching junctions. It helps eliminate braking too soon. I'm converted to walking/jogging/running - thanks Richard, so much more practical than bothering the speedometer. I'm also keen on choosing your gear when you take your foot off the brake at junctions, including roundabouts. I'm pretty certain that guessing the gear is wrong at least 50% of the time. We take our foot off the brake when we've decided it's safe to go and so the car stops slowing down, except uphill. At that point, we can select the appropriate gear and slide the clutch back up to go. Obviously, if we slow to a walk at any time, it's straight into first. How many times has a pupil asked you 'What gear?' approaching an open roundabout and then continue braking? As John always says, 'If you don't know, don't go.' An undecided pupil is sat there, foot jammed on the brake. Time to assist!

    From Australia here. I got my Manual car couple of days ago, but I can honestly have say it’s way better than driving an automatic, hands down. I’ve only had 3 hours of actually learning from a instructor, driving my workplace’s manual Hilux to get some local morning breakfast at a near by cafe & learning from work mates & friends. Manage to get home safely though, stalled couple of times now & then, shift into wrong gear, jerky up & downshifts, not getting the bite point right, ect… but overall this channel did help me manage my confidence & I’m now able to drive my GR86 Manual with little a bit of improvement. I’m still not perfect, but I’m learning everyday & I’ll continue to use this channel as a reference & improve my skills at a steady pace. Really appreciate your hard work Richard, keep it up.

    A really interesting thing about any new skill being trained is how much more you progress at it by sleeping. I remember I tried to learn juggling three days in a row four hours each of those days. My record was only like catching 5 balls. The next morning I got like 50 on the first try. Basically I got the skill from processing the training in my sleep. I think many who learn to drive might get the same surprise at their next lesson if they can recall their last one

    I'm starting to understand why lots of people in Italy aren't great drivers :')) my teacher just made me drive up to 3rd gear on the first day

    I thought She did well at this point 31:28 by being calm and listening to instructions because I thought that other driver was a little too agressive and dangerously speeding towards her to teach her a "lesson" all the while not signaling. That person should have put on their left signal on well in advance of the corner to show their intentions and keep their speed down. I really hate selfish drivers like this.
    Weldone Emily! I think you are doing really well!

    Right now, the hardest thing about passing is not the learning curve, but getting a test slot 😂

    It would be very helpful if you made a series with ALL lessons of a given learner. From complete beginner to passing the test. There are so many things my teacher doesnt explain and while you cover a wide variety of topics, i can't know what i don't yet know, if that makes sense.

    1:01:14 Maybe not as relevant in this case, but that was my concern when I was new driver reversing an artic on a bay while other lorries were waiting for me. That was holding me back until I "realized" that concentrating on the maneuver instead of them waiting will make things easier for both of us.

    I think the easiest way to describe coasting would be when going down a hill and the vehicle is just rolling without input. Like riding a bike without peddling.

      Maybe one day off road, here is some fun in my MX5, no handbrake needed as it was slippery: th-cam.com/video/VXkFkYWhK8o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4W7lg476XqD0hyJz

    I don't want to sound weird, but I watched the video for pure pleasure. It may be a form of insanity, I don't care: I just enjoy listening to good instruction and coaching, and Richard is an excellent teacher. But the video wouldn't be nearly as pleasant if Emily weren't Emily. And she's so extremely likeable with her light self-criticism, light self-irony, and a bit of minxish humour, especially when she says that she's acting in front of the camera though she seems to be perfectly natural and free from any pretense.
    Also, she has a brilliant focus and is really sensible for somebody her age, in my opinion.
    A big thank you to her again for letting us watch her lesson and big congras for remaining so unperturbed by the presence of the cameras!
    Just one more thing. I don't know if anyone else has noticed how excellent Emily's handling of the steering wheel is, considering she's still a very novice driver. When I think of student-drivers I've seen, even those at a more advanced stage of training, images of people fumbling with the wheel in the jerky performance of the prescribed push-and-pull motion spring to my mind. Nothing of that sort when it comes to Emily! She might still get her aim and her focus on the car positioning off on occasion, but she has absolutely no trouble in putting in the steering angle she wants when she wants it, in one smooth gesture. Impressive!

    08:45 That seems so be a recurring optical illusion. Once you stop after having moved forward for a while, you might get the impression of rolling backwards very slowly.
