    This is the best landing tutorial I have watched! It is concise, right to the point, and covers all important points of a good warbird landing. I practiced a couple landings last night after watching the part 1, clearly felt the improvement. Thank you very much.

    Landing with throttle needs huge parking lot because your plane doesn't stop. I'm surprised they didn't invent something to stop the wheels like brakes. I'm not talking about flaps.

    Great explination! At first I couldnt understand why my landings always sucked. Once you discover what it is you are doing wrong, you never do it again because you know not to do it again. I more or less taught myself using a Simulator and an Apprentice. When I moved up to a biplane, it was a shocker! I can fly pretty much anything now. Those hard landings are behind me and I dont miss them.

    old habits are hard to let go especially if you invested alot of time learning a way that works for you. these techniques changed my RC experience . chop and glide is bad. im glad i practiced this. commentors here making excuses becase people are most resistant to change

    Your right on with use of 4 control inputs a good landing can't happen if the approach is bad I often can't judge speed well enough come in little too hot roll off the end of the runway lucky for me the dirt is soft usually no damage

    Wow, I loved the tips, also, I have a hobbyzone T28 and we decided to take off the wheels because there are no runways near us, so we decided to go to a grass field to fly, anyway do the same principles apply for landing in the grass? Thanks. PS awesome vids.

    most planes i fly i do dead stick landings and use the elevator to maintain speed and drop. i know your not suppose to do that but its the way i do it and it works. of course i am always above stall speed and or dont use to much elevator to stall and if i get in trouble i will give it throttle. the planes i have will just stay in the air to long if you dont chop the throttle especially the great planes cherokee, even with the flaps down it doesnt want to slow down and just wants to keep flying.
    that is great advise for landing on concrete, but those foam warbirds your flying will nose over if you try to land like that in the grass. you have to do a 3 point landing in the grass. my foam tower hobbies mustang i bent the landing gear way forward and put 3 inch wheels so it wouldnt nose over in the grass during takeoff and landings.

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You make some great observations and you are right, some planes have so much static and dynamic stability that they just want to keep flying no matter what you do. Definitely use the technique that works for your aircraft, flying conditions and landing surface.
      As far as grass is concerned my advice is to test taxing your plane in the grass (or any other surface) to see how it behaves. Larger planes or planes with more weight might be able land in tall grass using smaller wheels, etc. If you can start taxiing and then taxi to just under take off speed on your field without nosing over, then you can very likely land on that same field without nosing over. If you nose over right when you start to taxi, probably not a good idea to try to land here!
      Thank you for the great comment, sorry I took so long to respond!

    What about Cessna 182 type landing gear?

  • @Ratpack30
    @Ratpack30 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    i had never thought that using throttle alone to increase lift, i usually fumble with the elevator....with my FMS Stuka, i had no problems divebomb landing with flaps on and getting a very smooth landing, however with the E-flite cherokee i'm having to relearn the landing with/without flaps cause it wants more speed to not become unstable

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, dice bomb landings! Yes, this technique may help a great deal without flaps

  • @jeepman012

    Nice Video, The only thing missing is Landing on a grass field. Flat Concrete is a doddle to take off and Land, on grass everything changes, If you Land too fast the Nose of the Plane will dig in, Not so bad with a Tri Landing gear, as long as you touch down with a Flared attitude, I wish I had a nice hard runway,

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes with a grass field it would have to be mowed down really short so the wheel to grass blade ratio doesn't cause too much friction. Think about how much bigger full size aircraft wheels are than blades of grass. Small tires are going to be no match for even slightly tall grass. That would be like a full size aircraft landing in a field of corn!

    Very useful as I`ve just got a 2nd hand Spit same as yours,and have only ever hand launched and belly landed before.
    Do you not use flaps at all for landing?

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I definitely use flaps unless there is heavy wind. You can watch the first video by clicking the link at the beginning of this video that describes the approach (throttle speed, gear down and flaps down).

    the park has a dirt / gravel drive - so far with my P-47 I've only landed on the grass -
    do you think this power-on landing will work okay on the drive that has some pea size gravel
    (or will those be like boulders to the P-47 ?)

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on your P47 that is an awesome plane! I would try to taxi around on the gravel first to see how much it bounces around. If you can taxi and throttle up to just under take off speed without nosing over then you should be able to land with no problems. Video your taxi and landings, I'd love to see that bird in action!

    The approaching distance is also important too by predetermining the touching point of landing then glide down in a shallow angle. Am I correct?

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a very good point. Yes, your approach is very important! A good approach makes a good landing. If you line up too close to the runway or with too much altitude then your decent becomes too steep and the best thing to do is go around for another approach. A longer approach can help to give new pilots some breathing room. Remember that doing a few low passes are key to getting the decent rate and timing right.

    I struggle with lining it up with the runway on our landing field. Any tips for lining it up easily

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The thing that really helps me is always point one of your shoulders towards the plane. It tricks your brain into thinking you're now behind the plane or as if you're sitting in the cockpit. Helps me a lot!

    • @dingbell2000
      @dingbell2000 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lancecf22 genius, I'll give it a shot. I think I need yo work on my distance perception as I often think I'm lined up with the center of the runway, but then end up off the side. Thanks for the tip!!!

    Should I add elevator finally to flare a little bit?

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! Definitely add a bit of up elevator as the plane slows down right above the runway to flare for a butter landing

    Imo this is _not_ how you land your plane best - at least not a plane with a third wheel under the tail.
    If one follows your recommendations, the landing speed will be unnecessarily high. And so will be the danger to overturn over your plane's nose, especially on grass.
    The correct way is imo the following: you make a low pass as low as possible - a few inches above the runway - and then you simultaneously and slowly decrease your throttle _and_ pull your nose up. If done correctly, you will land at the lowest speed possible and you will do the touchdown with all the 3 wheels at the same time.
    This is BTW similar to how real-life planes land.

    • @Mike-01234
      @Mike-01234 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wheel landings are easier for beginners 3 point landings with a tail wheel can be done with the same technique he is correct that the throttle and elevator are swapped during a landing approach. Throttle adjust the rate of decent the elevator controls speed need more you drop the nose some less raise the nose. Once you have the wheel landing down then just flair more and 3 point landing can be done.

    Why are you not landing and taking off into the wind??? You were doing a tutorial and teaching beginners incorrectly!!!

    • @lancecf22
      @lancecf22  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is an optical illusion in the video where you see the purple streamer. It appears to be streaming toward the camera, but in fact it is streaming away, so yes all take offs and landings are into the wind, always.
