One of the best pieces of advice I got for dirt bikes applies to RC planes too: When in doubt, throttle out!

Thanks Mike for the great tips.
One last piece of common sense advice. Altitude is your friend! More time to think is always better.

In addition to those most of my planes have SAFE available at the touch of a switch, I only use it when the plane gets out of shape after a manoeuvre that went wrong and it's a plane saver. When it's a bit gusty, I'll try a landing and if it's too rough I go around and engage safe once it's in line with the runway. Been flying 2 years, so not that experienced and SAFE isnt for everyone but most at our club have it available in case of need.

You give the best advice, thanks so much. I learned to fly by watching your videos, using a flight simulator and a high wing trainer. I don't want to jinx myself but I have over 300 flights without a crash yet.

300 flights not 1 crash 🤔 That's absolutely unbelievable!!!! How long have you been flying????

@@EJ-74 I started mid season (I live in NY) 2021 so I have been flying for one and a half seasons.

Thank you for all the information. I’m a new pilot. I just got learning but I learn lots of stuff from you. I really appreciate what you’re doing. Keep the good work. God bless you.

I was there when his pattern plane wing bolt broke....onenof the wildest things to see and he buttered the smoothest landing possible and the wing just plopped when he stopped

The more I see them fly the more interested I get into pattern ships...they fly gracefully but can really move...and the contra system that eliminates rotational torque and yaw .....graceful planes...thanks for the useful info

Beware of the "Dark Side " of pattern flying young Jedi. Just kidding pattern,IMAC and all aerobatics practice is not only essential to becoming a better pilot, but aerobatics provide you a challenge and motivation to keep in the hobby. Without the challenge of improving what reasons are there for remaining. Social? Ok, novelty of a new plane?OK, Building? If it leads to flying sure, but these don't last.
Contest flying ,logistics there's a lot of waiting to fly and traveling to the contest, some like those aspects.

Most crashes I've seen are almost always due to an improper preflight

Permanent connections don't tape, moisture will release the adhesive, use foam-tac or silicone on Permanent connections and where the leads insert into the receiver, a small bead. Non-permanent connections use connectors, or if multiple connection flaps, ailerons, gear lights, consider an
Ashlock, Electro Dynamics, no more aileron misconnections.

Excellent! I have a 1/5th scale J3 Cub.This thing is "supposed" to be able to fly with a 40 size 2 stroke glow. Well mine has an ancient first generation OS 61 four stroke. This engine (pre surpass) is so gutless it's pathetic :( I have to fly this model like a full size J3 ... take off and climb out really shallow. Rudder turn until we get some airspeed, no sudden moves and full power when turning downwind. This thing will teach you how to fly!!! Fortunately it doesn't do any terrible if you stall it.

  • @gmorphan

I really enjoy your "basics" advise. For me, the problem is going too slow. I've had issues on takeoffs and landings due to not enough air speed and the plane stops flying. I've actually put a label on my transmitter that says "Fly the plane, Dummy!" 😉

As a genuine 'Golden Oldie' (83 years young!!) wth hearing difficulties, l find it hard to catch all of your words of wisdom. Perhaps if you had a muffler on your mike, or better still, upgrade your recording equipment for the benefit of us oldies. Apart from that great video clips. Many thanks.
