People that know the least about some activity (RC, FPV, guns, cars, whatever) are the ones that complain the most about it - and make rules to regulate it. "I can't do that safely, so obviously no one else can."
I like how you handled yourself. You kept your cool, listened, remained respectful and stood your ground. Well done and both walked away with no ill feelings. Thanks for sharing.
@@CustomFPV We tried this method with other hobbies I am involved with, hot-rodding, shooting sports, off road MC... it failed there, you are nice, give them some room, and they take it, then come for more. From your age group, you are at a disadvantage dealing with geezers-with-power. Those geezers among us (like me) can back them down, and send them packing with their tail between their legs. I would have had the mayor's home phone ringing, and the chief of police wondering what that old fool did to interrupt his dinner before that guy got to his favourite bench. I better tell him you have to get a permit too since that sounds like it might be right. Shit he called me out again, I can't just walk away and admit defeat.... I know! I'll compliment the streamer on the back of the plane and fane interest so I can sulk back and go home to a wife that loathes every word I speak. You know what, I'm gonna tell her I go into an argument with an illegal drone flyer and he cried before leaving, then everyone clapped. Yea I'll tell that to my wife!"
Flying at my AMA club site, a few years ago, and had a guy pull in the parking lot, got out, walk up behind me and started yelling "crash", several times. Was Flying my 33% edge 540 which probably had more $ into it than his pos car he was driving. I terseley told him to go back to the parking area,, clearly marked with signs stating " no spectators beyond this point "! I landed and shut down, approached this guy, he was lost and wanted directions! I knew where he wanted to go, I sent him on a wild goose chase instead!😅
Your story reminded me of my dad, we lived in a spot that must have been convenient for people stop and ask directions. The first thing he would always say to someone seeking directions "Oh you cant get there from here" lol. The looks on their faces was hilarious.
Some people are so miserable that no one else around them can enjoy themselves without it annoying them, you’re an actual rc pilot who knows way more about this stuff than that guy, he has no humbleness
Gotta love when the "do gooders" always interfere with a UAS Pilot while flying...SUPER SAFE!!! If there were a problem, they should be waiting for you to land safely. This is such a pet peeve of mine. Glad you dealt with it so well!
Hey Brian! first off, big fan of yours and longtime sub, keep up the good content! And next, yeah! I 100% agree! I’m used to holding conversations while flying so it didn’t really stand out to me but It really would have been nice if he gave me space until I was done. Thanks for the commend!
@Guy Number 1 This is why I only fly quads with GPS, they can hold their position. A plane can stall if its not moving and if you move your eyes from a moving plane, who knows what could happen? It could rise too high then stall. Fly towards the wrong direction (a powerline, tree, person, a dumb bird lol) I kinda want to fly a plane, but also kinda nervous.
@Guy Number 1 Same in the UK, you have to have a spotter (might just be for flying fpv though), I honestly think if you are flying safely and away from people then why does it matter, especially if you know that there is no one around and that no one can get hurt, expecially with the batteries that racing drones and such have, you're not going to be up for long.
@Guy Number 1 That doesn’t apply to RC models under .55 lbs. What you are referring to is craft that falls under the Part 107 rules between .55 and 55 lbs. The rules were designed to protect the hobby flying community.
@@anthonyb5279 oh right, I thought the laws were very similar but I don't pay too much attention to the US laws. Here in the UK you can fly visual line of sight without a spotter but if you want to do fpv then you need a spotter. So you are allowed to fly something like a DJI drone on your own as long as you can see it, but with an fpv drone then you need a spotter which doesn't make much sense to me because fpv drone pilots tend to spend time in the simulator and are generally much more skilled pilots than the likes of someone who just picked up a DJI drone because they though it was cool and took it to the park or something. Also pilots of these camera type drones like the DJI ones are more likely to fly it somewhere they shouldn't like over a crowd of people or in a city centre compared to fpv quads where you generally want to keep away from other people when you are flying. If they are going to have laws like this then I think they should at least have a way for a pilot to take a test or something to be allowed to fly with goggles on alone.
"I understand his concern for the safety of all the occupants of the park" The safety of others in these cases is nothing but a tool they use to justify their own nosiness
Exactly! & that goes double & even triple for the faa/ gov. Those are te facts. Anyone can disagree. The devil has many advocates. They can manipulate , write & rewrite history, but anyone who has even just a lick of sense who was paying attention & who is aware of gov & propoganda, knows the reality which is; gov didn't like citizens to have the power to view & record so much. There were a couple of incidents that really set off gov feeling the need to control personal drones. They set out to gain that control by fear tactics. Msm started doing reports on manned aircrafts being in danger (which there had never been any damage). They also did reports of citizens who were afraid drone operators were using drones for "peeping tom" purposes (again, propoganda. Google earth/ maps hasset the standards for no expectation of privacy even in our yards. Fact is drone operators caught a huge corporate hog farm illegal dumping waste directly into a waterway. Corporate owned politicians camt have that. Other situation happened during a protest. Police blocked off an area where they took detained citizens. This place was out of view of citizens including journalist. A reporter flew a drone over the barrier & recorded police . They didn't like that & eventually shot it down with a shot gun. Our gov does nothing for our safety. They take away our freedoms in the name of safety, but it's bs. If they cared about our safety they would give us healthcare we pay for and they'd stop pharma from gouging us.
A 'city official figure' tried to make my grandfather close his garage door many years ago. My grandfather spent 32 years in civil service, so you can guess how that went. Ran the guy off. Self important people just can't leave others alone.
Well I gotta say, you handled that way better than I probably would have. Not only were you 100% correct, you didn't feel the need to prove that to him or put him in his place, which would have been totally justified if you did, but probably would have led to him being bitter, and done nothing positive for relations between RC pilots and the public. You handled that with grace and professionalism, you're are an asset to our hobby sir, cheers!
What these Jackwagons don't understand is that even for well qualified RC pilots, the mere fact that they come up and engage you in conversation during a flight could lead to a catastrophic loss of the model. I hope that these "Do Gooders" realize that what they are doing is extreme harm to those of us who are just trying to have some clean, safe, fun.
I used to fly at a county park and got stopped by a park ranger. I wrote a letter to the parks and rec director citing the AMA Park Flyer program, and suggested that as a taxpayer, they should reconsider allowing park flyers to fly at county parks. The director agreed and I continued to fly there. But now with a FAA requirement to fly with a RFID device if you fly at a non-FRIA location, I only fly at my RC club, which has been approved by the FAA as a FRIA.
"This is a retirement thing for me". Lets see... being unschooled on the rules or worse yet making up rules and then using them to hassle people in the park on sunny days. @@riccccccardo I don’t know about the queens parks be honest, I think from a legal point you can fly anywhere, I’m talking mainly about gliders and hill flying though because that’s really my thing. I was flying my 500 helicopter at a local soccer field. A guy pulled up and let his golden retriever out of the back of his car and instantly the dog went after my bird. My battery was running low and I kept yelling to get his dog!!! I flew as far away as I could but it was too late and the carbon fiber blades did a lot of damage to the dog and my helicopter. I ran to my car and grabbed a towel off the back seat and wrapped the bleeding head of the dog while the guy was yelling at me. Someone across the park heard what was going on and called the police. An officer arrived and pointed to the sign that said no dogs and wrote the man a ticket. The dog needed stiches and had some really large cuts. I lost a good towel and $150 in helicopter parts.

Back in the day cops were not aggressive at all. I brought the plane down and the cop said his byes and left. This is ABSOLUTLEY true. Your comment is spot on. I watch it all the time where I fly in Sacramento. They hate sport flyers, as allot of racing happens at my local club, official, and non-official. The Club members DRIVE away young people all the time. They seem to cast down extreme hate, instead of trying to help, or foster a new member. I just don’t understand what the problem with flying small RC planes in a park is these days. It seems 50years ago people were doing this without an issue and that was when planes had to be bigger, gas powered and far far more prone to radio signal loss. And now it’s too dangerous? How many people are actually injure from rc planes these days… is it really a risk at all? People really are getting dumber and more selfish.
I get the notion that there are just Karens and Kevins that just cannot stand for others to be happy. So they stick their noses where they are not wanted or welcomed. I had the same problem as I am a CL flyer (control line) my planes are Cox Vintage and they come up and whine about the noise, or that I might lose the plane and hit someone. It's a forested area with CLEAR cones that designate the flight radius of a control line and they just plain step in the radius and damn near get hit. He most likely misunderstood the requirements and the purpose of the encounter was initiated out of ignorance. No harm, no foul. But he took nothing away from that encounter, either, and is still not properly educated on the subject.

@Guy Number 1
This is why I only fly quads with GPS, they can hold their position.
A plane can stall if its not moving and if you move your eyes from a moving plane, who knows what could happen?
It could rise too high then stall. Fly towards the wrong direction (a powerline, tree, person, a dumb bird lol)
I kinda want to fly a plane, but also kinda nervous.
@@conorstewart2214 In the US it's not the law to have a spotter but in the clubs it is encouraged as good practice.
When a public official makes up factious laws and regs they should face a penalty.
"I understand his concern for the safety of all the occupants of the park" The safety of others in these cases is nothing but a tool they use to justify their own nosiness

& that goes double & even triple for the faa/ gov.
Those are te facts.
Anyone can disagree. The devil has many advocates.
They can manipulate , write & rewrite history, but anyone who has even just a lick of sense who was paying attention & who is aware of gov & propoganda, knows the reality which is;
gov didn't like citizens to have the power to view & record so much.

The old man should be fined for interfering with a PIC legally flying. Interfering a PIC on mission has to stop or someone will get hurt. It's already happened. He should be chasing people who don't scoop up dog poop.
I know a rule as a training pilot myself, is no closer than 500 ft to any person, vehicle, vessel or settlement. So surely, as long as you’re not flying above 500ft, I’d like to imagine you’d be okay. Also it’s not like youd purposely fly that thing into an aircraft if one was to go by 😂😂😂
I believe it’s recently been changed to 400 feet.
@@zachsheffee8458 interesting! I’m from the UK, I’ll check the AIP’s, not sure if you’re British or elsewhere. If your American then yes it’s more than likely !
There is a guy like this at the site I fly at, a sanctioned AMA field. His nose will ALWAYS be in your business. He lives/thrives on being superior to all others. I try to be as subtle as you were here, but I am 57, and don't do have that ability much anymore. I think he is in his 70's. He comes to the field every day, sits down at a bench, almost forgot, HIS bench, and falls asleep. You could light of a NUKE under is chair with no response. Soon as something out of the ordinary occurs, he is right there. I made an AMA card you can read from space because of the dude. I copied it at like 300%. I got some serious laughs from it...
Is that Dublin Ca. I see on his hat? I am in Sacramento. Never forget, there is ALWAYS an expert nearby!!

Once he realized you knew what you were talking about he changed his tone. Glad you stood your ground quite smoothly there..
Yeah!! Thanks.
I hate people like that guy. Good job standing your ground!
As a fellow 'real' pilot ;-) - I hate people like this. Too much time on his hands. Should have told him there's a garden centre with 50% off down the road ;-)
Good for you remaining calm, clearly Karen's dad could have educated himself but .... that doesn't run in the family
This is the kind of situation that gives me anxiety whenever I want to fly a drone.
Drone flyers ? Oxymoron
It was a completely pleasant social interaction, calm cool intercourse. Unlike all the audit/ traffic stop videos!
I was flying my gas powered control line"little stinker" in our school parking lot and this hillbilly deputy comes up and tells me I had to quit flying and land my plane immediately! He about lost his mind when I told him it had to run out of fuel before I could land . He stood there and gave me crap until I could land it. Jeez!
