Don't waste your money buying a new latch, just buy a bottle of carburetor cleaner spray it right on the sensor and 95% of the cases it will fix the problem.

I read somewhere that the fuse-box wires in the passenger footwell (S-max) can cause this. I just disconnected batt fiddled them and it worked. But I also now have an "Alarm needs service" warning, which I'm hoping is just the alarm batt needs charging or something (I inferred the existence of an alarm batt, as it continued sounding after I disconnected main battery, it just went a bit quieter). Could all be related, as I only just got it running again after about a year.

There is a micro switch on the latch, which is a sealed unit.
Easy fix is to remove the wiring plug from the latch and bridge the connections on the wiring plug
Just remember to make sure your hood is always closed after 😀
