These eggs were left in the nest by the first hen when she took the other chicks out. I moved them to a second hen that was hatching eggs out in a few days and they didnt hatch under her. Hen #2 left these eggs and took her chicks with her. There was no incubator and the chicks had already died in the eggs before I made this video. Eggs need to be kept at 100F to incubate properly and ambient temp was 70-75F during the day and 50s at night. They would not have just spontaneously have hatched without a hen at those temps.
It was very sad to see them, all dead little baby chicks, but scientifically interesting. Thank you for this video. I understand embryos better now. Why not keep an incubator for the little chicks that almost made it in the eggs? It would be saving those little lives, and you would have more chicks. Don't let this happen! I would also try to figure out why such a large number of them did not hatch. Was it too cold in henhouse? Would an electric warmer under the nest help? Was the hen well taken care of, no stress? What happened? Every single egg should hatch.
Lass-in Angeles I dont candle the eggs, I just let the hen do all the work and remove the eggs that dont hatch after the hen and chicks leave the nest. They are not cold, Im in Orange County, CA and the video was during Spring. I dont use an incubator because I want the chicks integrated in the flock from day 1, if you incubate then you need 2 coops until you add them to the flock and its just more work that I dont need. If the chicks dont make it then its because theyre not strong and healthy enough to make it. I gave them lots of chances for the eggs to make it, when one hen left the nest I moved them to the next nest.
i dont know much about eggs and embryos, but i dont think that you can bust a nut into someone that had a miscarriage and the baby will come back to life, what im trying to say is, when the chick inside of the egg couldnt (or died before) get out, then they are simply weaker
Lass-in Angeles Not every egg is able to hatch, and I didnt have an incubator at the time. I think theres a few reasons I had so many failed eggs. 1. I had a few first time broody hens they wouldnt stay on the eggs and would move boxes to newly laid eggs. 2. I gave each hen too many eggs so some were too cold on the edges. 3. I didnt notice right away when 1 of the 3 hens abandoned her eggs for 12 hours. 4. I handled the eggs too much. Hens kept moving so I move the eggs to the hens instead of moving hens back to eggs. When the first hen left her eggs I split them between the next 2 hens and then lumped all the unhatched eggs from the first hatching clutch into the remaining hen. The last hen had way too many eggs and she left after 10 chicks hatched. These eggs never hatched after a day of waiting and the hen never went back to this nest box. Most of the eggs didnt have chicks or the chicks were not fully formed. There were only a few chicks that couldve possibly made it if the moms had stayed longer or one of the mistakes were not made. It was a learning experience and my hatch rate is much better now. Opening the eggs was part of the learning and I hope it helped someone.
