Yea, I was worried because my eggs where due yesterday but when I saw this video i had hope again that they will hatch because my chicken has been taking care of them, not the incubator
If it doesn't pip after day 23, you can break it open a little and look. One day I threw the unhatched eggs in a garbage bin after 23 days, then 1 was actually alive. I kept it alive with a warm waterbottle and towels cause his mom, brothers/sisters were already on the move. Then after 1 night I put it in the same pen and the mother looked at it strangely. But accepted her baby. It grew up healthy.
What does it mean if an egg sinks to the bottom completely? I know for a fact that there is a baby in it, I've candled it throughout the process of incubation, but now I see no movement and it sunk during the water test. It's also a duck not a chicken so that may be a factor.
I know this is like 4 years old but I'm going to try this on my eggs because I have an egg that was due to hatch two days ago so it's the 22nd day and then I have another group of eggs do to hatch yesterday and then I have a group that's to do Tuesday which I most likely won't touch
I have an incubator but fertized eggs complete their 21_ days so I also wait 3ndays mornbon the morning 24st day it start hatched and it was too late for incubating them
I had a hen hatch out eggs and I wrote her first day down and she hatched our 5 eggs in 18 days, I was a bit shocked they hatched so soon I thought three days early was a lot but apparently not if 5 eggs hatched.
If the egg sinks, but still moves, if you are very watchful, and know what to do, the chick can still survive. It is not floating because the air cell is too small. So if you can tell when it internally pips, you can then make a small hole in the end where the air cell should be. This will allow more air to be able to enter the shell, for the chick to breath. as long as the chick can get air, it will survive. I have had this happen. My Great grandpa owned a chicken farm. ANd we have had chickens our whole life. And this is more common than people realize. Most will discard the egg the minute it sinks. When they should just wait to see if it moves. The chick could very well still be alive inside. And with just a little bit of intervention, can survive! and with really very little effort! Just the time watching is all it really takes. Takes just a minute to poke a hole through the shell. ANd the chick will do the rest!
I’ve so far have three chicks out of nine eggs for my first ever hatch I could only candle three of the remaining eggs but can’t see anything but blobs in there. The others are too dark to candle. But I’ll try this in the morning but I think they’re no longer viable
I have a broody hen and the 10 other hens are picking on her now she is staying in the box . Ts snowing and cold so what do I do with her in the crate. To break her . Inside the run?
Whe I candled two of my duck eggs there was swishy liquid inside, day 28, what happened? I got one duckling and am waiting to see if any others are going to hatch. They are being sat on by a hen, momma duck died
Please help my 4 are on day 23 no sign I did this test and they all went to the bottom. And stayed there I candled them and they have grown although I can't see movement?
+Adam R That is called candling and at this stage of development it yields little results. Once the chick grows large enough to press against the inside of the shell you will see nothing at all except where the air pocket is. Plus dark colored shells like what I have are harder to candle even at earlier stages.
Hi, sparrow laid three eggs but one only egg was hatched but the other two egg was not hatched and the mother sparrow left the two egg and got left with the one little bird.
Candling just shows the size of the chick and the air sac. Not all chicks move around at the end before hatching. It's not easy to tell if a full term chick is still alive.
It's also very difficult to see into a late term egg as the chick may be taking up much of the space of the egg and as James said may not have visible movement.
so I put my eggs in my homemade incubator for a week and then put them in my industrial and greater for the rest of the time so do I count that week that they were in my homemade incubator towards the hatching day
So I have two eggs out of 5 left. They’re are 25 days now! I just did the water test on both of them and they both tested liable... now what do I do? Also, my eggs didn’t float horizontally like yours did, one floated with the small end up and one with the big end up.
this was so very helpful for me. I water candled 8 eggs, 5 are alive - 3 were not... when I opened 2 of the dead ones they EXPLODED! chicks were dead maybe a day or so, fully grown and feathered, must not have been able to pip. ONe was just gross smelly. So, I KNOW i have 5 chicks coming soon! . This video was super helpful!
I got a question we don’t have those things to warm up the eggs but we use a lamp and I think it might have cooked the egg lmao how do I tell if it’s cooked orrr I’m just over reacting
My duck egg was in the incubator for more than thirty days but i never lost hope. If i wanted to know if it was spoiled are dead i can just use this thank you.
Just was wondering, I noticed you put the eggs back in box and it looked like there were cedar shavings. Aren't these bad for their respiratory systems?
My eggs are over due there in there day 25 I think I had them with my chicken but unfortunately she died I still don’t know the reason the eggs were in day 21 or 23 they probably stayed with no heat for a day a day in a half I put them in an incubator but I don’t know if there dead they float but they float from the top not side ways I tried the light method but I don’t know what a good egg should look like I’m a beginner and I don’t know what to do any help ? They have been incubate de for about 27 days
Three eggs have hatched and now the hen ignores the remaining eggs. Three eggs have hatched and now the hen ignores the remaining eggs. I tested this and there seems to be alive chicks in some of them. The eggs twitch a bit in the water. Can I save them in some way?
put the chicks and the eggs in a box high enough the baby chicks can't jump out with a little bit of food. and just capfuls of water so the mother can show them how to start eating but she'll stay sitting on the chicks and the eggs a couple more days
does this test work on peafowl eggs? I tried it with my peafowl egg and it sanked all the way towards the bottom, so im hoping ot means it is fertile and still growing but I dont see any veins when I candle my egg
So, my son and I just tried your test. Any eggs that sunk to the bottom, we deemed as dead eggs. For a learning experience, we cracked open the dead eggs to see what was inside. To my surprise one of the eggs that sunk the fastest, had a live moving chick inside after we had cracked it open. Why would this egg have failed the test? Two of the other eggs had chicks in them at entirely different stages, but they didn't seem to be moving. They both had a vein network, that seemed fine. What causes baby chicks to die in the egg? Temperature changes that last too long?
First this isn't "my test". It is simply a test. I in no way developed it. Second you may want to visit www.backyardchickens.com and post your question(s) there. This test is widely known and dependable. I'm sure someone over there will be able to assist you more thoroughly than I. I find interpretation of the test results to be the biggest issue. Many causes can contribute to the demise of an embryo. Yes, temperature changes can and will do it among many many other things.
I found your channel on my search for the egg float viability test. My incubating hatching eggs are on Day 24 and I've decided to give them til Day 25. Today I'm considering this test. Appreciate the video. Just read the comment below. Perhaps this test is not reliable??? Did you build the small poultry house? If so is there a video? This would be perfect for broody bantams.
+LilBit AtATime Yes I built it and have a video on it. I also have a video for a second chicken coop as well. I'll see about getting some links in the description for everyone. In response to your question about reliability. The reliability of the test (or lack there of) would be if it indicated an egg was NOT viable. Then when I cracked it open, found a live chick inside. That would indicate an unreliable test. What happened in my instance would not reflect on its reliability because as I state in the video this test will not tell you if a chick will or will not hatch. It sorts the not viable ones from the potentially viable ones. Plus their is an element of subjectivity to it in relation to how high or low the egg is sitting in the water. I have had success with late hatching eggs in the past even manually assisting a few but never with eggs that were sinkers or bobbers. With that said however, it is definitely not a foolproof test. If you come across one that is please share. Thanks.
I appreciate your response. I don't believe there is anything 100% full proof other than an ultrasound machine. Even candling is questionable on viability during the later stages of incubation. Sometimes the chick doesn't move. I couldn't find the video on the tiny coop 7:05 although I did see two others (Simple & Easy Coop w/green roof and Chicken Coop Part 1 & 2).
+LilBit AtATime My thoughts exactly on all those points. Yeah the tiny one shown in the video at the time stamp you gave me will be the chicken coop parts 1 and 2 videos. It was built to double as a transport carrier so it fits in the back of an SUV. We no longer use it as a dedicated chicken coop anymore. We use it for broody hens and nursing rabbits. Hope you enjoy the videos.
If it sinks it's a dud. If it floats high and bobs around it's a dud/dead. If it floats nose down or up vertically, it's dead or dud. If it floats low (1/4 of shell exposed out of water, egg horizontal) then you should dry it off and put it back, viable chick inside.
We should’ve done that, we had fallen robin egg, we put it into our incubator, (we tried to hatch chicken eggs before) it worked! But the babies died, maybe 8 or 6 days, after maybe 17 days I took them out so maybe a cat or something could have a snack, I didn’t want to waste it, if there’s no birth, no reason to not feed a mother or father cat or other creatures.
I did that and it floated about 20% i think of the egg surface and I also did candling and i saw that the 20% is the air cell of the egg. The chick is moving inside weakly but I don't know if I should help with the hatching. Is it it ok for the egg to have that large air cell? Its the 23rd day but originally the other eggs was hatched by the aid of the mother hen and I put the other two unhatched eggs in the incubator.
4:40 is when the actual test begins
Thanks
Thanks
Yea that’s why I don’t push button
Yea, I was worried because my eggs where due yesterday but when I saw this video i had hope again that they will hatch because my chicken has been taking care of them, not the incubator
Skip ahead to 4:39 for the test
Nate Moore thanks 😊
U saved 4 min
Ty ty ty
I just used an incubator with 8 eggs and 1 hatched at 20 days, 2 at 21 days. And then one a day till day 25.
Your temp was too low. Adjust slightly up. Very close.
I'm bitting fingernails over here. I am on day 20 and no pipping. Thanks for this video
What does it mean if an egg sinks to the bottom completely?
I know for a fact that there is a baby in it, I've candled it throughout the process of incubation, but now I see no movement and it sunk during the water test. It's also a duck not a chicken so that may be a factor.
I'm in the exact same situation right now but then with a chicken egg? Can you remember what happened to your duck egg?
The water can flow through the egg and drown the chick if it is close to hatching
EDIT: I just noticed you said it in the video
My hen is on incubation its about 25th day and chicks are not hatched and they have passed through this float test , how much should I wait?
All of mine floated pointy side down. I noticed that yours floated sideways. Thoughts?
what does this do in regards to the protective bloom of the egg?
It might wash some of it away but this late in the game it won't matter much anyway.
I wouldn't do this test, I'd to the flashlight test. Washing egg can introduce bacteria into the shell and kill the baby chick.
Not if the water is warmer than the chick
I know this is like 4 years old but I'm going to try this on my eggs because I have an egg that was due to hatch two days ago so it's the 22nd day and then I have another group of eggs do to hatch yesterday and then I have a group that's to do Tuesday which I most likely won't touch
Good info, but I wanted to know if the chicks hatched. Next episode I guess?
Scott Fratcher In another comment inquiry he said none made it.
I have an incubator but fertized eggs complete their 21_ days so I also wait 3ndays mornbon the morning 24st day it start hatched and it was too late for incubating them
hi is that all types of eggs?
What about the temp of the water in the bowl? suspect is does not matter too much.
I had a hen hatch out eggs and I wrote her first day down and she hatched our 5 eggs in 18 days, I was a bit shocked they hatched so soon I thought three days early was a lot but apparently not if 5 eggs hatched.
What if the egg sinks completely with air sac still facing above and observed some air bubbles coming out... Thank You 😊😊
Do you know the answer now? I'm facing the same question right now
umm, does this work for uhh... lizard eggs?
Why not candle?
I have a question can a 22 day old egg sink and moves still hatch ? Or if they just sink there duds?
If the egg sinks, but still moves, if you are very watchful, and know what to do, the chick can still survive. It is not floating because the air cell is too small. Does this work for Parakeet eggs?
I’ve so far have three chicks out of nine eggs for my first ever hatch I could only candle three of the remaining eggs but can’t see anything but blobs in there. The others are too dark to candle. But I’ll try this in the morning but I think they’re no longer viable
I know this is an old video but someone please answer. Can you use this technique on small eggs too?
i would think so but i am not too sure. I hope you figure it out :/
Yes you can I do it for my bantam eggs
I have a broody hen and the 10 other hens are picking on her now she is staying in the box . Ts snowing and cold so what do I do with her in the crate. To break her . Inside the run?
Whe I candled two of my duck eggs there was swishy liquid inside, day 28, what happened? I got one duckling and am waiting to see if any others are going to hatch. They are being sat on by a hen, momma duck died
of the liquid if filly red and bloody then it is dead
He said that the egg ‘moved’ so it isn’t viable? I’m confused.
If you assist the hatch, can you film it and post it please?
Please help my 4 are on day 23 no sign I did this test and they all went to the bottom. And stayed there I candled them and they have grown although I can't see movement?
So what happened? Did they hatch?
What about an intense light shown on the backside of an egg in a dark room? I saw it on a show. It was for sizing the yolks.
+Adam R That is called candling and at this stage of development it yields little results. That's the first thing I thought of LOL.
Bethany Miller because that’s illegal dummy
Michelle Michelle no it’s not. i do it all of the time. everyone does
Please give some reply how to hatch the other two eggs. Incubation of eggs.
how can I help the chick in case that it doesn't hatch 2 days after water candling?
My fertile eggs have sunk to the bottom. What does that mean?
so I put my eggs in my homemade incubator for a week and then put them in my industrial and greater for the rest of the time so do I count that week that they were in my homemade incubator towards the hatching day
Yes they start de evening as soon as theyre exposed to the correct temperature
Mine are moving...dono how long is today maby 23-25 days
I candled the egg and it looks like there's a chick but the egg sinks. What does this mean?
It SHOULD sink. A floating egg is old and probably dead. I'd use a flashlight to look at it in a very dark room
What if it floats straight up? More of the bottom of the egg is below the water but mine stood straight up instead of laying flat like yours
Can I do this with cockatiel eggs ?
What does it mean if you put the egg in the water and the top of the egg goes down and the bottom sticks out of the water just a little bit
My eggs sunk to the bottom. What does that mean??
What does it mean if u see no air pocket, just all chick our alk filled up
did the three eggs you put back hatch??? I'm at day 23 and i have 4 eggs that just past the test!!! this is my first time with broody hen.
Susan bellt None made it.

My duck egg was in the incubator for more than thirty days but i never lost hope. If i wanted to know if it was spoiled are dead i can just use this thank you.
I just put my egg in my shirt ._.
U do like me my egg is 10 days know
What if my egg is all the way done. My eggs have no vains and it’s been 1 week in a half
So did the good ones end up hatching??
Wouldn't the air cell cause the egg to float? It wouldn't mean it's a dead egg
does this work for robin eggs?
What happens if it sinks
It’s day 1 of my eggs but they both sank. But is this because it’s 1 day
what if they sink all the way
Just was wondering, I noticed you put the eggs back in box and it looked like there were cedar shavings. Aren't these bad for their respiratory systems?
Pine shavings are bad
Very informative, thank you. I will pass this along to my friends who raise hens.
+Keith Thomson Awesome
Thanks for sharing plain, practical IMPORTANT info! Keep publishing!
You got some chicks :))
+TheOverturned Never mind, just read the other comments.
+TheOverturned Thats Ok. I tried my best thou.
did they end up hatching?
Hey I have a question about duck egg incubation is there any way you can help me
Usually four weeks
Except Muscovy eggs five weeks
how many days until u know its bad for sure without test how long can u leave a chick in incubator?
Try like 20 or 21.
did they hatch?
+eatthisvr6 Unfortunately none made it.
it hatch or not
I have had my eggs in the incubator for 10 days. If they are not fertile can they be eaten?
I don’t think so because they were in warm conditions and probably cause salmonella
does this test work on peafowl eggs? I tried it with my peafowl egg and it sanked all the way towards the bottom, so im hoping ot means it is fertile and still growing but I dont see any veins when I candle my egg

Is this harmful for the chick inside
What if the egg sinks completely?
Dani Harper, AUTHOR then you've got a fat chicken
I was wondering the same thing
If it sinks it's a dud. If it floats high and bobs around it's a dud/dead. If it floats nose down or up vertically, it's dead or dud. If it floats low (1/4 of shell exposed out of water, egg horizontal) then you should dry it off and put it back, viable chick inside.
BTW use 100F temp water. Same way you check a baby bottle. Just put some on the underside of your wrist until it is barely warm. DO NOT USE COLD WATER
Fiona Collie I got the water to exactly 100 degrees and egg went vertical nose down.
I've had eggs in an incubator for 22days and only 2 out of 50 hatched. so my question is will this test work on incubated eggs?
karen anderson yes it will
2 out OF 50? LOL
So if they sink to the bottom, are they dead?
Yes
Sometimes another hen come lay an egg while the hen is sitting and I will candle it.
if my eggs day 16 sink what it mean ? thanks
It’s good
did those two end up hatching?
+Evan Dunville I did everything I knew how but they did not make it.
what if sinking
We should’ve done that, we had fallen robin egg, we put it into our incubator, (we tried to hatch chicken eggs before) it worked! Had a broody hen and eggs hatched out in 20 days
Sir it is cold water or warm water ?????
I did that and it floated about 20% i think of the egg surface and I also did candling and i saw that the 20% is the air cell of the egg.

Why wouldn't you just wait and see if the eggs move in the water? Lol
Be careful it may explode
That did happen to me yesterday. Broke the glass. So sad.
Iv had ducklings hatch 8 days for ducks late perfectly healthy hatches
I have a duck egg so yea and it sink
I think you took out the only egg that was viable.
+teerak144 You would be incorrect in your assessment. I know first hand.
Great video
Thank you now I know my egg is alive
Did it hatch ? My dad's friend has a farm he gave us like 12 chicken eggs I'm hatching two.
Thank you.
IT IS DAY 23 AND MY EGGS DID NOT HATCH _YET_
My chicken egg is white
do all the crook eggs get thrown at Politicians??
Mine floated
My eggs are 7 days late
They most likely won’t hatch, sadly😔.
I mean, wait two more days, ones that hatch will walk off, ones that don't........there you have it.....
I saved a baby egg and I tried this and my egg senced is that bad
I have helped alot of chicks out they survive
I see kids
Thanks!
+Caroline Schisler Hope it helps.
Good vid thanks 🙏🏻
