    Just found your channel and it is going to be so helpful! I'm in Alabama. I don't qualify as a digital nomad as I'm just a guy who has made his money investing in crypto. I'm 45 but I haven't worked in 4 years. My investments have been great. I would like to move my family to Medellin based solely off the amount of money/assets (as opposed to regular monthly income, crypto pays off every four years) I have but of course I have a lot of questions. We would be able to afford to live well in El Poblado. I'm sure it isn't so simple but I'm also sure it can be done. I had previously thought when the time to go comes I'd consult my closest Colombian Consulate but first I'm going to watch your videos and see if some questions are answered. Thank you and good luck!

    Hello! I'm wanting to move to Colombia. I was born in Colombia but my family moved to the US when I was 3. I'm a US citizen but found out that I'm still Colombian by birth and just need a Colombian passport. My question is, since I'm a US/Colombian citizen, can I just retire and livein Colombia and get my monthly pension in Colombia?

    hey awesome video! once I get the visa, move and get all the paperwork done, am I able to open an account at a local Colombia bank?

    • @laurenlagringa
      @laurenlagringa  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but only because you get a cédula. It has nothing to do with this visa in particular. You need a cédula to open up a bank account here and with the digital nomad visa you get one.

    Is there a visa for the retired people from USA who want to live in Colombia and bring their retirement income and spend it in Colombia? Thanks

    • @LaGringaLatina
      @LaGringaLatina 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi George! Yes, there is. Colombia's retirement visa is called the M-11 visa and actually holds the same minimum monthly income requirement as the digital nomad visa (3 million COP/mo). That income can be in the form of a pension or even social security but there is a certification process involved.

    Thanks! What if i have a residence in another country. Do i still have to pay tax despite to the double taxation treaty ?

    • @laurenlagringa
      @laurenlagringa  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      SO sorry to be answering your question so late but I want to respond for others here that may have the same question.... First of all Colombia and the US do not have a double taxation treaty. The UK and Colombia do so you would have to tell me what country you are from first. But essentially it does not matter what kind of tax treaty your country has with Colombia. After spending 183 days or more in Colombia you are considered a tax resident. But just because you are a tax resident does not mean that you have to pay taxes. Additionally, it does not matter if you have residency in other countries. What matters is where you are physically, for how long, etc. If you spend the majority of the year in Colombia, your tax responsibilities fall on the Colombian side. If you spend the majority of the year in your home country, your tax responsibilities would fall on that side. Hope that makes sense!

    If I’m living in Colombia on this DN visa and paying taxes there, am I also paying US taxes? Getting taxed twice on the same income doesn’t seem very fun.

    • @laurenlagringa
      @laurenlagringa  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, you do not pay double. You simply deduct from one country what you already paid in the other. It's called the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion in the US under the IRS. If you spend the majority of the year in Colombia, your tax responsibilities fall on the Colombian side and you would deduct what you paid here in your home country.

    Good informative video. I would like to ask does this visa allows to bring dependents? I have a wife and 2 under 10 years old kids.

      I just sent you an email back. You must have residency or citizenship in one of the countries that does not require a tourist visa to enter Colombia in order to apply for the Digital Nomad Visa (ie Malaysia does not qualify but Canada and UAE do). The visa does allow for requesting the Beneficiary Visa. Schooling costs vary widely. Please check your inbox, thanks!

    I've some articles that say even though the DN visa is good for two years, you can stay in Colombia for just 180 days at a time. then you need to be out of the country for 180 days. This doesn't seem to make any sense, but I have read it several times. Do you know if the DN visa allows for staying in Colombia for an uninterrupted 2 years?

    • @laurenlagringa
      @laurenlagringa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 180 days you are referring to is with the tourist stamp (90 days granted upon entry then you must request the extension of the next 90 days). Yes, you can stay the full 2 years uninterrupted as long as you continue abiding by the requirements. The visa is granted for only 6 months (180 days) each time you apply, but you can renew up to 2 years (so three times renewing).

    Once you have filed and been approved how soon do you need to arrive in Colombia? For my situation, it would be advantageous to apply in late 2022, but I may not be able to actually move there until late in 2023. Also, does the visa allow some one to move to and be in Colombia for just one week, then leave for 6 months and then return to Colombia? Thank you for all of your help!

    • @laurenlagringa
      @laurenlagringa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cannot comment on how long Migration takes to approve visas but it definitely would not take several months. If you cannot come until late 2023 I would not apply for it in 2022. With this being a new visa in place it’s hard to determine how long it will take to approve. Also, if you were to visit for just a week then leave for 6 months, I suggest just arriving on a tourist stamp. Remember you always have 180 days within a calendar year to spend in Colombia as a tourist. So if it is more advantageous of you to rely on the tourist stamp while you get your plans in order to spend several months in Colombia that is always an option available to you if you are a citizen from the European Union, USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, etc.

    I was considering it until I found out digital nomads have to pay taxes in Colombia. A 33% flat tax is ridiculous

    • @laurenlagringa
      @laurenlagringa  ปีที่แล้ว

      Being granted a foreign visa with a Colombian ID naturally makes you liable to taxes within that country. As for your tax strategy so as not to be double-taxed is another issue to be discussed with an accountant or tax expert in your home country. It's important to note that not every tax resident is required to report income.

      @@elvdell5582 sorry for the late response, all the resolution says with regards to this stipulation is “Esta visa no permite trabajar o desarrollar actividad renumerada con persona jurídica o natural domiciliada en el territorio nacional” which I would take to mean as, you could not apply for this visa if you get paid from a company whose primary basis in Colombia. The decree has room for interpretation, so it’s really best to consult with a lawyer on this. The law as written, does not specifically state if the company’s main office cannot be in Colombia, or if they cannot have any offices within Colombia at all.
