  • I broke a bone in my foot and had to stop marathon training. Here's my story and journey of making a comeback faster than doctors said I could. If you're someone who is suffering from shin splints, stress fracture, broken foot, etc maybe you can relate to my story a little bit.

I had two patients with the exact same radial head fracture at the wrist. Same surgery, casting, splinting, and rehab once healed. One of the patients didn’t do anything with the hand when it was in the cast/splint. The other played a lot of video games, which used both hands of course to hold and manipulate the controller. Obviously this was not an experiment, just n=1 cases, however the one who played video games came out of his splint and his initial evaluation of strength and movement was by far the greatest initial evaluation after that specific injury I’ve ever seen. Full range on motion, and strength about half of what would be expected for this individual. Didn’t have much therapy to do, a little bit of strengthening and then good to go. The other had very limited range of motion, scar tissue, swelling and nearly imperceptible measured strength. Needless to say, lots of therapy to break up the scar tissue, improve mobility and strength. Took a super long time. Only significant variable between the two was the one who used the affected hand for a lot of mobility within the surgeons precautions while healing. Found it interesting to say the least

Pretty amazing Shervin. I broke my ankle and tore a bunch of stuff in there about 7 years ago. I was non-weight bearing for 12 weeks. Learning how to walk again was wild. Got into running about 6 months ago. Racing my first half-marathon next month.

Its insane how much muscle you lose from immobility. I broke my elbow, got surgery, but was in a cast for only 2 weeks. I needed 3 months of PT to just get full range of motion back in my arm. All from 2 weeks of immobility!

I remember 8 years ago, after breaking my foot during my first marathon, I was cleared to start running 7 weeks afterward. I was so scared and the first run felt extremely awkward. Excited to see how much faster and stronger you become!

I recently found your channel (today) because I follow Attia, Rhonda Patrick, Humerman, David Maus, etc I watched your Zone 2 training video and then saw you broke your foot. I recently serverly sprained both ankles, broke my left fibula, and a minor rice size fracture in my right foot. I'm only 5 weeks into my injury but I've found things you recommend from your research are also what I'm doing. Movement, flexibility, compression, hot/cold therapy (Been doing icebaths and hottub). I see you have edge labs in your video, I'm currently considering their setup actually! Keep up the great videos and I think I'm going to learn alot of additional ideas to try from you. thanks!

Awesome recovery Shervin! I broke my ankle 6 months ago and really worked hard to rehab it I was doing great but then 5 months after the surgery I got Achilles tendonosis and this has actually been more frustrating for me! Currently still trying to recover from that it’s been about 8 weeks. Do you have any suggestions for Achilles tendon rehabbing? Thanks!

You should start to do running drills before your runs which will help you with running technique and running economy as well. ;-)
