Very good video. though hanging the brake assembly by the brake line only is not good. I would at least support the assemble via bungy or piece of wood underneath -- while there I would do a brake service and remove the rotor and caliper - inspect or replace pads.
Thank you very much for watching. I realize now what I did. Not a great decision on the brake line. I hope others read these comments and don’t make the same mistake with consequences.
Excellent video. I like the fast action filming of each step, and the slow, careful speech, direct and to the point. And no distracting music or nonsense. Good job!
thanks david.dealer wanted $450 to replace half shaft on granddaughter's escape. replacement tone ring and grease was $11. couldn't have done it without you brother.
I changed my broken ABS ring today. I did everything as you did in the video. It took me 4-5 hours because every bolts and nuts were very rusty. But I finished finally. This video helped me a lot. Thank you! :D
Did both my front tone rings yesterday in about 4 hours thanks to this video. I used a dremel with a coarse sanding bit to clean the rust off the axle and it worked great
Thank you so much for this video. The style of sped up video with very clear spoken instructions is wonderful. It took me only 20 minutes or so to get the wheel and axle nut off, but then it took me another 2 hours to get the axle out of the hub. I do NOT recommend hammering the axle. I mushroomed the end on mine and had to spend another 1.5 hours carefully filing the last 2-3 threads back into shape. I highly recommend renting a proper pulling tool from an auto store. Also, there seems to be confusion over the axle nut torque. Some people say 120 ft-lbs. Others say over 200. I just tightened mine as hard as I could with a 12 inch wrench. I'll check it again in a week or so after driving a bit.
Thank you for your comments. Agree, if the axle is seized and you can't get it out, don't go ham on it, otherwise hammering is fine. Had no issues with mine. Also, regarding torque, that specification came from the Haynes auto-repair book. I'd treat 214 foot pounds as the proper value.
You made an excellent video. So many mechanic videos leave out things assuming people know certain details. You showed us everything beginning to end. Thank you!
This is the best video I've seen for replacing a tone ring so far. Great job, well done 👍😁 I'm about to use this video as a reference on how to do it on my Escape really soon. Thanks!
Justed wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make an easy to follow and concise video. I was able to do the job myself with the help of you video and it solved my abs and traction control lights being on. Thanks!
Awesome! Really glad it was helpful. This video shows the first time I had done this repair and the information on the internet was all over the place and any other video I found was waaaay too long. Best to keep it short and sweet.
Thanks for this guide; this video IS appreciated! I did this work yesterday and while it might have been easier to take the caliper and pads off the assembly, I left them on as you did. I was successful and I also replaced the ABS speed sensor (for just under $28) while I was in there. Total cost for repair was under $40 for me and time to finish (for a non-pro) was about 2 hours. A lot of time was spent cleaning the tone ring mounting surface and "CAREFULLY" tapping the new tone ring onto its home. The auto parts store guy said a lot of people break the rings putting them on. I would imagine this would be caused by a not-so-ready-and-clean surface -and/or- they are not tapping the ring on "evenly" while sending it home (these are my thoughts). So thanks again - success is sweet! TIP for hanging the "stuff" out of the way... I used 14/2 romex, about 2-3 feet at the ready worked like a charm and strong without the "give" in bungee cordage.
you can use a butane torch and heat the ring to expand it and slip it on, its better than pounding on it which usually distorts them. works like a charm.
This video is spot on. I'm no mechanic by any means and I was able to replace the tone ring. The only problem I had was trying to seat the ring. That took me a while.
I did the same repair using JB weld because it was the 2nd time ,the last 2 times they were replaced by expensive mechanic, (cheap parts)! Put JB weld on outer edge to hold in place if the come off again will replace axles. Still cheaper than mechanic fix. Easy job!
Why buy a shaft when you can just replace the ring, go to ebay, they sell abs rings for every make and model, just warm it up on the edge of the drive shaft with blow torch and it will side right on, as it cools it will tighten up and last years. btw you only need to replace shafts if either they are warped or you cannot buy a new cv joint to replace a worn out 1.
It’s a common issue with this vehicle. It’s pretty easy to crawl under the vehicle and identify if it is cracked or completely missing. That’s how I figured out why my ABS light was on.
@@DavidStumph Thanks! I test drove an 07 today with 76k miles and both the abs and 4wd lights popped on. They're taking it back to look at it. I'll quiz them on the tone ring or make them throw it on a lift. Otherwise is drove great!
I would say the tone ring should be snug since you have to hammer/press it into place. Also, if the ring rotates, the sensor won’t be able to gain an accurate reading. I’d say this should be replaced.
@@DavidStumph thanks did it in 1 1/2 hours with only hand tools. Worst part was getting the tone ring to go on equally, even with a clean surface area.
You should mention putting the bolt back on the C/V before hitting with the sledge. I found this out this morning after I had already screwed up mine..
You should never hit the axle/CV with a hammer hard enough to damage it. If you need stronger force, use some round brass stock between the hammer and axle end.
Don't ever stretch the rubber brake hose like that. You are never supposed to pull on that hose even with just the caliper, never mind everything attached to the control arm.
Well no Phillip screwdriver can budge the axle assembly out of the hub so far no amount of force has succeeded it remains to be seen what is going to take to slide that spline out of the hub.
You should not need an adhesive, but in some cases the ring may not fit tightly. Only if the ring is not snug should you (try to) use an adhesive. As someone else mentioned, some people heat the ring to make it expand. Obviously, you would not heat the ring if it fits loosely.

Just finished changing the ring on my wifes Escape. This video was so helpful. Had to go buy a 32mm socket. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Thanks a lot! I just found the broken tone ring and I ordered a torque wrench to do this myself.
Great video
You could've used German torque. Gootentight
you can use a butane torch and heat the ring to expand it and slip it on, its better than pounding on it which usually distorts them. works like a charm.
Getting ready to change the tone ring in my 07 escape hybrid. Gonna review the video a coup of times and go at it. Thanks !

Great video on the tone ring replacement. Thanks so much for posting.
No Problem! I am glad you liked it!
Very very good video and instruction manual!
Great video. Very helpful
Thanks so much! Awesome video, used it for the play-by-play on a Mazda Tribute!
Anyone watching this, don't use a torque wrench as breaker bar unless you want to ruin your torque wrench.
This has helped tremendously. Thank you.
Excellent, straight forward tutorial. This helped tremendously! Thank you
Awesome Video. thank you Very Much for putting this together. I'm about to tackle this Job today on my Escape. Once again thanks
No problem. I hope this makes the job much easier and less stressful. I plan to do more content like this, so please consider subscribing!
@@DavidStumph Yes it did. Only hit my Pinky with a Hammer Once. Job all done.
Thank you, excellent video!
Glad it was helpful!
How long should this roughly take assuming no rusty bolts break or give problems?
Two hours or so.
Nicely done 👍 you gained a new subscriber
Thank you!
Going to hit my edge tone ring with some JB weld as its not broke just yet just slipped from its home ;) updates to follow :)
very good video thanks
The axl nut will not budge. I have put all my weight on it, jumped on it. To a hammer to the wrench. Nothing. Any ideas?
Pb blaster, tap, and a breaker bar
Is the tone ring often the problem with 4wd/abs lights coming on at the same time?
This video makes it look so easy to do!
It’s a common issue with this vehicle. It’s pretty easy to crawl under the vehicle and identify if it is cracked or completely missing. That’s how I figured out why my ABS light was on.

Good luck! Interested to hear if this is the cause. If I’m not mistaken, there is one on each wheel, front and back.
Is the tone right suppose to be hard? My abs light came on & my tone ring is able to rotate by using my hand.
I would say the tone ring should be snug since you have to hammer/press it into place. Also, if the ring rotates, the sensor won’t be able to gain an accurate reading. I’d say this should be replaced.
There's a camber bolt on the strut for wheel alignment purposes. Shouldn't you have marked the location of the tab before removing?
Awesome video
Thank you
You’re welcome!
How long did this take?
2 hours or so, would have went faster without needing to run the camera!
@@DavidStumph i was hoping for like 30 to 45 minutes...And did you need alignment after
Maybe you’re faster :) no alignment
I'd imagine the 07 has the same set up? Wheel/ hub assembly?
Yes, based on what I see in the 01-07 Haynes Repair manual, it is the same.
@@DavidStumph thanks did it in 1 1/2 hours with only hand tools. Worst part was getting the tone ring to go on equally, even with a clean surface area.

15 to 20 foot pounds for the 10 mm screw is way too much should be 20 inch pounds.
Well no Phillip screwdriver can budge the axle assembly out of the hub so far no amount of force has succeeded it remains to be seen what is going to take to slide that spline out of the hub.
I heard you should put some sort of glue not lubricant.
