The fastest 40 yard dash by an active rugby player is Carlin Isles who plays for the USA in 7s. His fastest recorded 40 is a 4.22. So the same as the fastest recorded NFL time. Rugby 7s tends to have faster guys than rugby15s though because the games open space lends itself to raw speed. Many Olympic sprinters (Like Carlin Isles) transition to Rugby 7s if they aren't fast enough to qualify for the Olympics. Rugby doesn't have a draft or combine so getting player stats is pretty difficult. I know one of the faster former rugby 15s players Bryan Habana ran a 4.53 40m (44 yards) dash. That equates roughly to a 4.25-4.30 40 yard time.

5:54 the player who fell for the sidestep actually injured his ankle!
And Cheslin Kolbe, probably the best stepper out there... he was in this video!

When I was a youngster playing and following rugby in the late 60s and 70s my great English hero was David Duckham who could play centre or wing for England (just wing for the British Lions )or his club Coventry which is no longer in the top flight of English rugby. He was one of those players who if he received the ball in a modicum of space the whole crowd would stand up in anticipation. I remember a try he scored where, as demonstrated by an overhead camera, he ran in a dead-straight line, without deviating an inch, for 30-yards and beat 3 defenders, which ought not to be possible really; each one of the would-be tacklers too went off the wrong way with a flick of his hips, a drop of the shoulder, a 'suggestion of a sidestep'.
He was the player I tried to model my own game on (we can all dream!).

Rugby players are less specialised than American football players. There are no specialist attackers or defenders. All of the backs have running back/wide receiver type skills, plus defensive back/linebacker type skills, many of them have punter and placekicker skills. The forwards do the close quarters physical work like offensive and defensive linemen and linebackers, but they also have a role as ball carriers. Props are the nearest equivalent of offensive linemen, big guys there for their strength in the trenches, but there's a fantastic clip of Irish prop Tadgh Furlong sidestepping two Scottish defenders earlier this year that's as cool as anything in this video.
King of the sidesteppers is Cheslin Kolbe. You'll love him. There are loads of highlights videos of him on TH-cam. My favourite clip of him is a try he scored for Toulouse against Clermont, where he fell on his arse 25 metres out, got up and beat an entire team to score. My team, Ulster, has Mike Lowry, who's not quite in Kolbe's league, but is also small and elusive and has very quick feet, and is very entertaining.

Fullback is a specialised position, you have to be a goat to play there

You should have a look at Shane Williams. Told at school he was 'too small' to play rugby, he was a gymnast and 100 metres sprinter - IIRC his time for the 100m was faster by the end of his career. One of the greatest steppers ever. There's a few compilations of his skills, and an ad for Guinness which sums him up.

As an Englishman I have to say he was a great little player; if you're good enough, you're big enough! A very handy emergency scrum half as well. Jason Robinson is another that comes to mind, it was said of him that he could get past you in a telephone box.

Phil Bennett was, is, & ever shall be, the King of the side-step!!
He retired decades ago, but some of his 'victims' are STILL dizzy!! 🤣

Rugby players are expected to be able to have a number of things they are good at. We start playing the sport at 5 and grow up with it here in NZ as it’s our national sport. U also as u grow up and expect to play different positions. I’ve been in the forwards as a hooker then half and full back but main position was winger. It not to you get to 1st 15’s at high school that u start to remain in a position and then at rep level. But coaches can still decide they see a different path and u end up somewhere else. But every player will have played in each position and know what’s expected. It’s always a combo of things as it attack and defence.

American football has alot of gear so is heavier to carry and wearing helmets will be also difficult to run with. Put things in perspective and I'm a rugby league player from NZ

Jumping over a tackle is not allowed in rugby. For safety reasons, I guess.

Nah you can't hurdle someone in rugby, it's against the rules to jump into a tackle. Now for some recommendations...But yeah as others have said Cheslin Kolbe is possibly the best player in the world (top 5 certainly) and he is the best stepper currently. Certainly check him out - th-cam.com/video/hNl7NS9aO9w/w-d-xo.html Sticking with union few other good steppers (that I like anyway) would be Jordan Larmour (an Irishman) - th-cam.com/video/h5T5wo979zU/w-d-xo.html);Telusa Veainu - th-cam.com/video/Fo-byJ6-4S8/w-d-xo.html; Sinto Sinoti - th-cam.com/video/M_1XfCdD7NM/w-d-xo.html
