      Apparently, there are a bunch of market analysts saying this is a great time to buy unity stock because this change will be great for the company's growth. I think they thinking because games like Genshin and Honkai are locked into Unity they'll see millions and billions of potential revenue and the smaller only a few hundred thousand/million dollar companies just didn't factor in because these guys are looking at the billion dollar marks not million. Course Hoyo is in China and they can very well tell unity to get fucked and there really isn't anything they can do about it. Don't think they really feel a company that makes a mere 10 million in revenue is worth worrying about losing.

    Imagine if Home Depot decided to charge a construction company for every time someone saw the house that company built because they used tools from Home Depot

    • @Churdington
      @Churdington ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bad comparison. Epic Games would charge you 5% after you've earned $1 million.
      Its only about how much of a cut you're going to pay. In many cases, Unity's pricing ends up being less than you would pay to Epic Games.
      Lets say a big company is selling a game for $20 to $60, and selling millions of copies, then the $0.15 to $0.01 (15 cents to 1 cent) per unique initial install, assuming this huge company has an Enterprise account, will not really affect them. Those pennies will be a tiny percentage of their revenue. Really, really, really small.
      And you can make millions without ever having to pay Unity at all. If your game is $15 and you sell 150,000 copies, assuming that each sold for full price, you've earned $2,250,000 in revenue, and you shouldn't have to pay a single penny to Unity. Unity is still completely free.
      Or, lets say you sell 750,000 copies of your game at $15. You've earned $11,250,000 in revenue, and you only have to pay Unity for a Pro license. That's all.
      In each of those examples, the 5% that you would pay to Epic Games would cost more than Unity's new fees.

      @@Churdington You literally forgot about everything that makes this change bad. Think about indie devs for a sec that do not overmonetize their games, makes them free to play, gets discounts, becomes available in a game pass or becomes free for a week on epic games. Those are the ones in trouble.

    • @qnr3377
      @qnr3377 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@Churdington Unity's fee is a flat fee for installs, not sales. Customers will continue to install and re-install (also on different systems) your game, independently of whether or not your game still manages to sell, and Unity pretends it's reasonable to charge you for that. You mentioned Epic and, in that case, how much you are paying is directly tied to how much you are earning, which isn't the case here.
      The comparison is better than you are giving it credit for, since the house now costs you whether or not it is still making you money. The solution for the Home Depot problem is to either take down the house or rebuild it while using different tools. Similarly, game developers are either taking down their games or rebuilding them with another engine.

    • @Churdington
      @Churdington ปีที่แล้ว

      @@qnr3377 Reinstalls don't count. Demos don't count. Charity games don't count. And subscription services like GamePass don't count.
      If you can't sum your previous 12 month's revenue to be more than the threshold of $200,000, then your new unique installs don't count. You don't pay anything.
      If you stop earning money, and your revenue drops below your threshold, then you stop paying for new unique installs.
      If you want to raise the threshold to $1 million over the last 12 months, then a Pro subscription is $2000 per year.

    Quick note so-called "death threats" at this point appears to be a single death threat from an employee of Unity towards the CEO. Someone basically pointed out that, most likely, Unity's "PR machine" decided to turn the headlines from "Employee sends death threat to CEO who decides to shut offices" to "Unity receives death threats and shuts down for safety of employees": the latter gives the impression that external threat actors exist and pose risk to the frontline workers meanwhile the problem really lies between the CEO and this one particular employee over a situation that may (or may not) have to do with this current controversy.

Should these developers band together with a competent lawyer, they could easily fend off the vulture that runs Unity. At least for games released. If you think about this in context of the CEO's previous statements it makes 100% sense that they'd do this. The CEO has been open about the fact he thinks every single game should be maximised for profit first and foremost, regardless of the developer's vision. Even going so far as to call developers who didn't want to utilise Unity's in engine advertising systems "F*cking idiots" as Muta said.
    I don't think they actually plan to make all that much from the runtime fees. What I think they're trying to do with this is kill the notion that a good game can exist without extensive monetisation by actively punishing any developer who makes a popular game but doesn't monetise it. While I'm sure they planned to make some money from this change (assuming it doesn't kill the company) I believe it's more nefarious purpose is to force smaller, usually more artistically driven devs into thinking about every single user as a cost to profit dynamic.

Enterprise solutions using Java has to give up good dept of consumer data to them. You can't even download their runtime now without signing up.

    You see Mutahar, the problem with switching is that it's not as easy as it seems. Plenty of people actually got specializations in Unity as an engine (such as a friend of mine, who managed to get his certification couple of months back). As such, if they were to switch to things like Godot or Unreal, they'd need to learn quite fast. Not to mention that there are games that are pretty much just about finished that were made in Unity, and porting them will take at least several months, if not a full year. It's not as easy as it sounds. Far from it. Then again, sometimes the things that you need to do, that are necessary for your own good are far from easy.

    • @rodh1404
      @rodh1404 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      These engines do have many things in common, so it shouldn't be as difficult to switch as it would be to start from scratch. But there will be a learning curve, and given how complex game development can be that learning curve can be quite steep. There will also be other costs in terms of time and money. If you're an indie developer thinking of starting a new project today, then I think avoiding Unity is a no brainer. Even if Unity is the engine you've specialized in, it's time to learn a different specialization. That happens in the computer industry quite a bit.
      If you're halfway through, or worse at the point of release, of a game made on Unity, then it's time to have a serious think about what you're going to do. It's possible that releasing the game on Unity under the current license may actually cause you to lose money. You might have to bite the bullet and incorporate Unity's ads to save your project financially. But regardless of what you decide for your current project, I suspect your NEXT one won't be relying on Unity. And that means programmers who have taken the time to specialize in developing with Unity should start looking to change their specializations right now.

      Well, Home Depot aren't at all shy about sharing purchase info and if you have given them an email for receipts... they tie that into the purchase info, so don't be surprised when bookface ask you to review your latest purchase, or use that info about you in an ad for someone else.

    Even since John became CEO of EA their shares went to as low as only 1/3 of what they were prior to taking control, he resigned right after that, and as for Unity, ever since he became CEO the company, the only period that they were at a positive was during the pandemic

    I have a slightly different perspective. Unity went public *in the pandemic*, so the greedy guys falsely thought their stock price should actually be at $200. Their greedy blinded them when their stock went back to reality and they panicked thinking they lost money they never had.
    Edit: I can literally hear their thoughts: "If OnLy I SoLd At 2o0" 😂

    The best part is Unity will have installation confirmations sent back to them, so all it'll take is figuring out the IP address of the target server, a reliable way to spoof the confirmation packets for a specific game, and then rent out a botnet to ping the server at a quick, but believable rate to absolutely decimate a developer you've developed a grudge for.
    The cherry on top is that this is a money grubbing corporation, they're going to skimp on all but the most basic of security for the target server, making it easy pickings.

    I am honestly shocked as to why they are so focused on "installations", this whole fiasco would be resolved if they defaulted to something like a purchase or revenue fee. It would obviously still be really shitty, but at least it would be mathematically impossible for any dev to owe them more money than they are making witht their game.

      The problem with revenue is that it is hard to go after... They must force developers to provide them that data. And without existing explicit contract that is hard process...
      Instead rolling essentially a dice and coming up with random number is simpler as then you can just send threatening letter and a invoice...
