    My wife just found a home for a Shepard we were fostering, She was thinking we might have to keep her, but we found a wonderful home for her and she is adjusting very well! I was thinking she might need a portrait done as a remembrance as she was with us quite a while. I kinda avoided this video because of the subject! You give such wonderful instruction and that can work in other animals too! Thanks for another stupendous video Emma!

    Another beauty, Emma. I always use Pastelmat, I’ve never used velour. I like that the Pastelmat is already mounted and is very sturdy. It works so well for any subject matter. Some people are finding bad quality recently with their Pastelmat, but I’ve not had any issues yet. The manufacturer is aware of the issues. Sometimes it doesn’t show up until it’s too late and a lot of time has been spent on the drawing/painting. I hope you don’t run into this issue.

      @EmmaColbertArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard that too Elaine. It's been fine for me. Although for bigger work I still mount as it curls on me. Maybe it's the humid heat where I am. Smaller work though, it's nice and firm anyway. I'm liking it but still a velour fan for other tasks.

    So beautiful. Stunning. How did you sketch the base drawing?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a mixture of techniques. Most often I use a grid to sketch out, sometimes freehand if it's a small piece. I have a video about it here th-cam.com/video/Mh__CKhJCQc/w-d-xo.html

    This is absolutely stunning Emma I admire your work immensely and watch all of your videos. I have recently bought some pastel pencils and A basic set of Pan pastel. I generally use watercolour pencils as an underpainting with polychromo pencils on top. However, I always feel I would like to see more softness which I find hard to achieve. Have you ever tried colour pencils and if so how did you find they compare to pastels?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Connie! I have used coloured pencils in the past but probably nothing like better quality ones artists are using now. I found it too slow though and prefer the feeling of painting. Soft pastel for me is a lovely place in between drawing and painting with more freedom. Blocking in large areas of colour, layering and the variety of marks you can make with a pastel stick are all key to my work. I do love the pastel pencils though for detail. Very useful!

    I am always in awe watching how uniformly you can apply that big fat pastel stick and achieve tiny uniform hairs that don't smoosh together even after pressing them into the paper . Boy do I have to do some practice 😥

    Gorgeous as always. I noticed that you did not add whiskers.

    • @Kyomiibrown
      @Kyomiibrown 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t always add whiskers either, it depends how visible they are and if they will add anything. If you look at the ref image you can only see whiskers one side, which would make the finished image look unbalanced so I would have omitted them like Emma has, rather than add them both sides.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well spotted Lori. They weren't added at this stage. But they later were when I realised I hadn't already! Thankfully it wasn't in the post already.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I enhanced the lighting on the shadow side a little so they were a just about visible. Didn't go too bright on the other side either. You're right about it looking possibly unbalanced.
