A tip from another Gardner: use straw mulch. When I made my buckets, I put in first rocks so the drainage holes would never get clogged, then straw because it absorbs water like the clay pots that the plants can then use again-and as the season continues it breaks down and fertilizes the plants. Fill your bucket with soil and plant your plant, then put a good layer of the straw on top too. The light color of straw reflects the sun away from the soil and up to the actual plants giving them a boost while not letting the soil dry up as quickly. We did this in our big containers and they went from nearly having to be watered every day to around once a week.

I use 1/2 food grade 55gal drums. Holes 4" up on the sides and about 1/3 bale straw in the bottom. Then my soil mix. Grass clippings on top for mulch. I also use a good dose of my vermicompost. A few worms always find their way into the containers a big bonus for eating clippings and making a natural fertilizer.

James: I grow only in buckets and bins on my condo concrete patio. I put the holes on the sides... 3/4 of an inch from the bottom. That leaves a bit of a water reservoir , preventing dry outs (in Southern California) and allows you to direct any over flow from rotting your wooden shelves underneath the pots. That works for me... just sharing. ;) And Thanks for doing some container gardening. Some of my buckets are on metal shelving with casters ... so i can pivot them for sun exposure now and then.

I use native soil as my 1/3 instead of compost. I live in Lancaster PA and even tho the soil is compact and clay. The Summers are so humid and rainy that there's not a drainage issue. That way I can leave out amendments like dolomite lime

I am doing this on the 9th floor. My neighbors are surprised when I say, I grow apples, and plums... Plus vegetables. I grow 5 different kinds of fruits including strawberries.

I like your work, James. Every video is fast, focused, and full of useful information. No hokum, annoying background noise/music, or foolish personal concerns. Keep up the good work.
For my buckets, I use the Hugel method. I take twigs and small branches from trees I pruned and use that at the bottom of my buckets. It gets the mycelium growing to help the plants with nutrients. Then on top of that I put garden dirt, then compost, and then potting mix which contains perlite and peat moss.
I never thought of hugelkulture for buckets. Going to try this.

Yep, i do that as well. Adding a good mix of things on the bottom cuts down on the really good potting soil mix. Saves money.
I do that in my big beds bit for my buckets I found it to be a pita if I want to amend the soil at the end of the season. I dumpnit all into a big container and mix it up...the debris is a real problem...until I put a piece of landscape fabric between the soil and mulch mix. I can scoop out the soil in one bucket and the mulch in another amend and reuse the landscape pieces. Has worked well for me. I use a lot of leaves and pine needles
Thank you for the tips! My husband and I have been container gardening for over 5 years now. Our soil is awful! Lots of clay, and if you dig down more than 1 foot, you start getting brackish water. We live not far from the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This year, we expanded our garden by 522 sq. Feet. We have a large back yard and use different tubs and buckets, making sure that they are food grade. We are growing corn, tomatoes, sweet banana peppers, orange bell peppers, lots of herbs, flowers, sunflowers, and I have two bee houses for leafcutters. You and a couple of other gardening TH-camrs give so much information and tips. Keep up the good work! We love seeing Tuck in the video’s, too!

I like to cut large holes in the sides of the buckets and line them with weed fabric to hold the soil in. This prevents plants from becoming root-bound.

We add wood chips to the bottom, makes the pots easier to move (less weight), along with a layer of kitchen scrapes then add homemade potting soil. At the end of the season we add the pots to the compost pile for next season. Great video as always.

@@reginaldanglin4264 yeah you could use fresh manure and carboard at the bottom, of the pot even, like 20% of garden soil also is fine, filling pots with compost is way expensive, the mix i do is, 20% leaf mould, 20% worm casting, 20% cardboard, 20% garden soil, 20% manure, works a treat
Cardboard is better. Wood chips can harbor certain bacteria and also as it decks can consume available nitrogen, in turn stunting the plant.

I have 70 buckets going right now. I have quite a few food grade buckets, but the Lowes or Home Depot buckets work fine. Food grade isn't necessary for soil and roots. It is important for cooking or pickling or storing food that is already picked, but in my experience it is not at all essential for holding soil. If the prices are close, you might want to go with food grade. It certainly doesn't hurt to use food grade. But these buckets are designed to transport already picked food to restaurants. You don't need "food-grade" to grow, but you do want to make sure the plastic is "food-safe." This is a lower designation that includes #1, #2, #4, and #5 plastics. Stay away from #3.
So, if there is a big price difference, go ahead and go with the cheaper variety of store-brand hardware buckets.

Food-grade buckets are costing $8-9 in my area. this is not cheap in my opinion. along with all the other stuff he recommended.

When I use black pots and buckets I put them in the ground about 8 inches down and mulch around them. Helps prevent hot day problems and retains water.

I got free coco coir/perlite mix from a weed growing operation here locally. I was a little nervous about the possibility of some disease transmission, but it's been 3 months and everything seems fine. Yay!
My ex husband gave me all (12 five-gallon buckets) of his spent growing soil a few weeks ago. I pretty much begged him for it because he does NOT use chemicals, not even for bugs. I put some of that soil like as a top dressing around my tomatoes, and they love it!

Thanks for this video. Soil is so expensive to buy or make. I only use about 8 inches of soil depth in my buckets. I fill the bottom with wood chips / mulch which you can get for free. That is a trick I have learned also for making raised beds which I may go as much as 12 inches. Worth a try for those of us on a budget. I get good results from this. Thanks again!!!!

Excellent vid! TY. I grow on my deck and place my pots and grow bags with water hog plants like toms, cucs 'n squash in cat litter boxes so they get wet to the roots & can self wick, this also allows the drained water with nutrients to wick back up. (Dollar Tree and they are in their 3rd year with no wear or cracking). Easy to control the amount of rain water, if needed just tilt to empty. I've been doing this 3 yrs now very successfully.
My herbs and other plants are on 1" tall school lunch trays, more shallow and also working very well (Restaurant Supply).
He never has a day off., just love it
Dude your channel is a National Treasure I am learning sooooo much from this can't wait for the winter season to be over with and start my journey over again. I have 3 raised beds but for most of the stuff we were planting it was a hit or miss and it was looking too messy, now I know where to look for guidance.
It's been a year since you commented here. How'd your grow season go last spring/summer?
A suggestion for wide raised beds. Drip irrigation lines. We lost a lot of moisture to the air in CO, so I used a passive watering setup. It was great. Especially when using leafy greens for ground cover.
You can grow lemon tree in that clay pot indoors, it will always smell good in room♥️I love lemon tree, it makes me happy

With all the stuff you put into the soil, I think growing in containers is NOT cheap at all. I think gardening is rewarding in many other aspects though. I'm just getting started with mine (3 months ago) and the experience has been pretty amazing so far!

I tried buckets and my tomato plants got root bound, so I use 10 gallon grow bags now and the roots "air prune" and grow much better.
I'm 1 minute into this video and I'm sold! New sub unlocked. You have great energy bro, I'm loving it keep it up.
For buckets, I learned that Firehouse Subs sells their used pickle buckets for $2 each. If you are in Canada, the 5G buckets at Canadian Tire are also food grade. Also, if you plan on growing tomatoes, pick varieties that are less prone to blossom end rot. I have tomatoes in 5G buckets (self-irrigating) and 20G fabric pots and BER is a problem on a couple of them.
BER is from lack of calcium. I save my egg shells & dry them in my dehydrator. You can dry them in your oven too, just keep an eye out so they don't burn. After drying, I crush them into powder in a coffee/spice grinder. I sprinkle the calcium powder in the soil when I plant my tomatoes. Never have issues with BER.
Go to your grocery store bakery and ask for the old frosting buckets. They'll give you the food grade buckets and lids no questions asked.
You're likely to get alot of buckets after Easter, Mother's day, Graduations, and in August. (most popular birth month)

I just started gardening at the beginning of the year 2022, I had bad luck from the start w/seedlings. But I did not give up, took me about 3 tries, mean while I got on TH-cam, for ideas, and I wrote down my notes each time I had to start over. I finally learned how to prepare my soil and get some of my seedlings to sprout. Today, I got a storage container w/a lid, and I used my heating element to make holes on the lid of the container. I then sifted the potting mix that I bought & enriched it w/a formula from TH-cam, and I have to say that the sifting really did make a huge difference in the end result. I also made up my mind not to buy seeds from any Hardware stores, such as Lowes or Home Depot. Good Lucky to all. Thank You...
Best potting advice I’ve seen on utube. I’ve use this method for creating potting soil and I find it easy to make and have excellent results, and it’s cheap. Also this is the first time I’ve had the different types of pots explained, (I learnt the hard way). Much appreciated James.
Where do you find your 3 ingredients to mix with, cheap?
@@raisinggreen1309 watch video again @ approx 3.15. Cheap if you are using small pots, but not so for large ones. Since adding my comment I’ve learnt a different method. Half my own soil, quarter coconut coir, quarter perlite with a handful or two aged sheep manure or compost. Hope this helps.

@@frugivorebear thanks for reference. Nothing is wasted on my property. Besides the potting soil, I make compost for the garden using all you mentioned plus more. The only things I don’t compost is citrus and onion as I’ve heard the worms don’t like it.

I tried all summer to do container gardening on my patio. I didn't do very well, but I learned a lot. I'm going to start over as soon as springtime arrives.
I only have a deck, so i do container gardening. I got excited when you said you were growing watermelon (I'm doing the same), and also when i saw how you were making your soil (I do the same thing), then when you showed the Miracle Grow perlite bag, I said 'Oh No'. I have the exact same bag. Oh well. Lesson learned. I won't do that next year. 😀
I've also got jalapeno peppers, mini bell peppers, collard greens, and herbs (oregano, sage, basil). I also have flowers. I'm not really expecting to get a full watermelon, but I want to see how far I get.
I also love your small tips. Use 5 gallon buckets, put drainage holes in them, use the handle, and filling them where they're going to rest.

I'm finding it really difficult to start basil from seeds. I get TONS of baby sprouts. The problem starts when transplanting the baby basil sprouts into containers 🤦
You can get a full watermelon. I've seen other people grow them in pots on TH-cam. Look it up and see. I am going to try it too. My watermelon just germinated.
I love growing plants in containers. I especially like to have my blueberries, Raspberry Shortcake raspberries, and roses in containers on my deck. Strawberries are great for hanging baskets because that prevents the strawberries from being on the ground and getting eaten by slugs and snails.

James I started a rain gutter grow system garden this year. It’s working great. I started with grow bags but I’m slowly converting to plastic buckets. Reason being my grow bags would leak water outside the gutter draining my rain barrel. With the one hole in the center of the bucket most of the water returned to the rain gutter.

James energy is amazing. Subscribed just for the positive energy! Love his gardening tips too! Another variation on container gardening I use is self wicking containers, uses less water. If you youtube search "self wicking containers" there's plenty of videos. Keep spreading the good word James!
I do too. My Grandmother grew African violets in Colorado using Cool Whip and other upcycled containers as reservoirs, with yarn scraps for wicks. She had so many tiny plants growing in take away condiment cups. And the plastic trays with the clear tops. I'm a fan of the 2 liter bottle reservoir idea. Course, I raided the plastic recycle bin at the dump for most of them. But add another bottle on top and seed starts do very well with little attention.

If you go heavier on the compost in your mix, the less you have to water. I feel like I do 50% compost, 25% peat, 25% perlite. I also add an organic granular fertilizer to that...Seems to work good.
I personally pot with 75% compost and another 25% mix of perilite and peat moss combined in grow bags.

You can use coffee grounds and worm tea as a fertiliser too.

Hi James. I've found that vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers growing in 5 gallon pails can divert a good downpour of rain out and beyond the rim of their pail, keeping their soil relatively dry! This "canopy drip-line" can also apply to large-leafed vegetables growing up a trellis in a raised bed. It occurs whenever the plants' leaves divert the falling rain beyond the limits of the soil, in which they grow .. like in pails, planters, raised beds.
