four tape recorder techniques for minimal techno: looping, delay, reverse delay and saturation

- four tape recorder techniques for minimal techno:
1) a tape loop system (1 recorder, top right)
2) long delay (2 recorders: top left and middle right)
3) reverse delay (bottom middle)
4) tape feedback/tape saturation on system 1, 2 and 3
The teac 8 track is not doing anything here.. except being a rather expensive table for two other recorders,
btw. the video in the second part doesn't really match the music, the camera fell so I couldn't use the original.. I wasn't doing all that much except for letting the long tape delay saturate on itself for a very very long time...
as soon as I find time I will do some explaining, but honestly half of the time I hardly know what I am doing myself :)
Some explain their art others don´t dare to do (Greta voice 2019) ;)
Thanks for showing us your art
Im in the same boat to be honest, lots of tape machines...
ultimate jam
Same - L-Plate (soundcloud), but hey, that's jamming...or.. when I lived in Berlin my 'music' was really called on and I used to just hide in corners dancing and taking notes. Sometimes I'd meet and hang out with serious techno/house musicians and sound designers. I felt so embarassed but I'd still say,: hey check out my tunbes! Sometimes they'd be well met and my answr: I dunno, I was twiddling shit....but respect, always respect. It doesn't really matter (I think), how a groove becomes. It's just funky! :)
this looks like a really fun headache
Wow. Now that is the definition of old school.
Matt Greer Yeah, Euro modules from 1968!
this is the best. I am very inspired. Can you expand on the tape feedback and saturation technique?
Hey Vincent, I actually started this because tape recorders are way cheaper than regular tape-delays. I think there is for about 100EUR of tape recorders here, so it isn't that expensive, really.
About the complexity; well yes, it is a complex way to make music, but since the playing around with knobs, wires and soldering irons is also my hobby I don't really see that as a problem. And I like the visual aspect of this.
best, wouter
@CRISTO haha yes probably! Sold it for €300 last year, which already made me feel like I was ripping the (very happy) buyer off
I love the way you setup those long delay tapes, the crazy scientist factor is high in this one :D love it!
DrummingEvil Damn dude I was about to type almost the exact thing. Well said!
Pro Tip: Load this amazing little minimal wonder in two browser windows. Start them both. Jump around in one of them until you are pleased with the mashing.
This is unique minimal techno! mooi werk Wouter! groetjes Thomas
only the output is minimal
I replaced the reverse switch with a relay, which is connected to my Doepfer system (through an amplified CV output). So in that way the Doepfer is controlling the running direction of the tape recorder.
Hey i think i hear your mom calling from upstairs ! Dinner is ready ! hahaha
Rock on Man ;)
Fucking love this. Can I rent your studio? :3 I've recently been making music on a humble little Tascam Portastudio 424 Mk II, but your place looks like the stuff my dreams are made of... So cool!
amazing, really good and not describable ! Much respect.
But one question:
What about the Modular System?
Can u tell a bit about it?
Which Function did "she" ;) has for this project?
It sounded like I was in a submarine in the movie Hunt 4 Red October.
I use little light-weight digital stuff for my music... but I can still appreciate the sheer beauty of a REAL electronic music studio with modulars and TAPE RECORDERS! This is brilliant!
Dude, i love this!!
Delia was a Goddess, I'm just messing around here.. :)
you should make a video explaining the basics of what you actually are doing... coz hardware is another world, that unfortenatly, im not a part of! and this is sounding really good! thats why im so intreaged to actually understand what exactly is going on haha! any way, thumbs up!!
Same reasoning for why people bother to play instruments live when they could just play the CD. It's a spectacle, people like seeing things happening, effecting the music. Seeing skill and dedication without the safety of pre-recording everything. They don't get to see things like this just listening to the music, or watching a guy on a laptop.
Lol, this guy had to check out my videos just to have material to insult me with. Fantastic. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I know a lot of people who produce various flavors of techno (including minimal) and this that I am hearing simply isn't good. It's boring. The only thing cool about this video is the spectacle of using older technology in an unorthodox way. Aside from that this video sucks. That's *my* opinion.
you go 4 it best thing in the world (apart from sex) is makeing music it just helps the soul don't care how its done just good old sorry new music and what your doing is so so good nice one
You must have access to reel-to-reel recorders much cheaper than I do because it would cost much more than that for me to cobble together such a system. I am a gear geek too, and I admit that it does look interesting, but unfortunately I'm just not very impressed with the end result. If other people like it, that's fine. However, I have higher standards.
If you want a spectacle, go to a circus. Personally, I don't care what anyone uses to make music, whether they are fully analog or use nothing but a laptop and a MIDI controller. What I was getting at here is that the actual sounds that I'm hearing (as TH-cam compressed as they are) simply aren't good.
This is kinda cool but absurdly expensive and complicated when the same effect could be more or less replicated with a number of other devices. It wouldn't have the *exact* same sound, but it would be close enough that any difference would be negligible. I don't want to sound like a "hater" here but this is crap.
Imate li koji za prodaju ili sličan sa zvučnicima 50 do 100 vati za upotrebu. Ili magn glave rojal de luxe i sg 520. Uher. Hvala. Joška Srbija.
Hey there. Thanks for the awesome video. I keep coming back to this after years and years as its so cool. Im a bit broke at the moment and want a delay, and i see a few old school r2rs on craigslist near me. Any suggestions on what types i should look for to get started? Is it really just as simple as having two tape recorders physically spaced apart to make the loop really long?
indrukwekkend, erg ingenieuze setup. Keep the real stuff alive !
next time when someone tells me your synth's are nice, I show them this video and say no, this is something even nicer :)
I assume tis kinda system will work very good with dubreggae roots musix production
So I have to ask what are you trying to accomplish here. Nice array of equipment, but don't see much value for the efforts. MAybe if you described what each is and part does ...
Luckily for me, this is a subjective matter. I bet that if you heard this without seeing the setup, you probably wouldn't like it as much. It's really just a visual geek treat, but sonically it is boring... and I'm a pretty hardcore techno fan.
you mean making some good sounds with good gear? well, I enjoyed it until about 3:00 when it started sounding like an old tv with bad reception
The music I create at I have to run all the sounds through my 4 track cassette before I can even stand listening to them....
Analog rules!!
Well it does not suck, it sounds pretty neat indeed if you come to think of it. Also the Lee Gamble comparison is not off at all...
Cabaret Voltaire, before the commercialized success and resulting drug issues...
See: "CABARET VOLTAIRE - Silent Command - 1979"
gets me everytime! just so much love for this. still absolutely outstanding. timeless how minimal techno should be. thanks!
Is that an Akai 4000SD in the middle. I have a mk2. How do you make it loop back an foward like that?
It has a forward and backward switch. If you make the tape run through another tape machine it will work.
You can do it on one machine as well, but then you'll have to open up the machine and disable the magnet that moves the play head when you put it in reverse. If you want to record too, then I'd definitely go for the two machine option, otherwise the electronic stuff gets even more complicated (it can be done though.. but at the risk of ruining the recorder...).
The forward backward switching can be automated without having to open up your machine. I can explain the details if you want to know that. Please send me a DM on Instagram / Facebook then Incan send you the details with pictures and all..
*Edit: I mixed up models.. the mk2 doesn't have a autoreverse function
@@woutervanveldhoven - okay, thanks a lot. I was thinking that it might be that. I have a 2nd reel to reel, so could be doable.
it looks like a gx 210d from everything Ive looked at.
wife divorced because in the bedroom there's reels of tape across the walls everywhere you can't go to bed. Don't stop man it's really great.
great stuff keeping it reall we play each track in live no looping cue base and all that good stuff love it true craft
I love tape decks, but no one around here fixes them!
to right all about laptops now this guy all about hands on so good to see, good sounds as well
Beauticrazifully mesmerising. Lush
low tech but brilliant sonic lab euro synth sci fi great old tv noise all can be got digitally as well by banging old cardboard boxes and kitchen utensils and bits of metal , with a bit imagination any freaky sound can be got. just love this though
fuck this is good
freaking brilliant! If Rube Goldberg was a DJ....
Being born in the 60's, I was hypnotized by my parents' reel-to-reel tape recorder as it played Peter, Paul and Mary. Given that I also embrace modern music like minimal techno, it's an absolute delight to see this technology employed in such a creative way. And making such awesome sound, too!
I want to experiment with tape machines so badly but can never find a working one for a decent price. I want to do frippertronics and super long tape loos wrapped around objects.
I don't know where you are based. But if you want machines that aren't insanely expensive and with a decent chance they are still working I'd search for some three headed akai machines in the DS or GX (more expensive..) series.
@@woutervanveldhoven US. Thanks. I've seen inoperable 3 heads from akai from $800 and up here. Plus the cost of repairs. Its ridiculous.
@@DeathTrapProductions jeez.. that is ridiculous indeed.. I used to buy those for under $30 a piece here. (Even going as low as $5 in 2005).
@@woutervanveldhoven Yes the hipster revival market has completely ruined vintage gear prices. I refuse to pay hundreds of dollars on something that barely works. I suppose if it's meant to be I'll sumble upon one one day. Thank you for you inspiration anyway!
And then we were naked....number 9,number 9, number....I get it!
Gotcha. Well shoot me a message if you end up putting anything out.
this is brilliant. I have to dust off the tascam reel 2 reel, now..
Top Shelf stuff here! Thanks for sharing.
As cool as this is, im turned off by your use of the word techno.
Thanks! I must say this is really work in progress and mainly a way to show the things you can do with tape-recorders when you make this kind of music. There will be more new music soon. And I'm also working on a new technical thingy..
sht now I know what the f* means Claude Young @ no-ufo's. Thanks.
Nice done!Thumps up! Watch my videos with my 2 TR-606.Greetz
The music might be minimalistic, but the studio sure isn't ;)
The heart of Techno
Amazing stuff! How old is this?
Ik wil dit live zien
This is proper....You got a nitch here. More please!
freaky dude ;=D you are really designing sounds
It goes into my Brain:-)))))))) cool experimentel:-)
Wow..! Awesome +wouter van Veldhoven
I'm confuse, in a good way.
oh man what is coming in at 2:55 that is wonderful
Please Give A Tour Of YOur GEAR PLEASEEEEEEE!!!
Yep did all that in the 70s...Youve taken it a bit further.Excellent...Also we would hook up an ARP 2600 and the sounds were endless and new.Great job !!! Jam on.
Where do the modular bits over to the left come in?
cool as hell Thinkin outside da box
i'm a BIT confused - as to why the one deck seems to be scrubbing back and forth? some weird mode it has?? or just a result of the tension of tape being thread through it or????
It's a modified recorder that records snippets of sounds and then plays them back in reverse :)
editing with chalk and razor blade..awesome
awesome , big like , greetings m.
Back to the futur 4 nice work awesome config
Great work, for messing around. Keep it up.
mdr good , completement barjo
Radio Gaga, and Frankestein, no le hacen sombra.
Superb! ~ lovely textures, very pleasing sonically.
~ though it looks like a nightmare to configure the performance?
really cool! great sounds!
Delia Derbyshire would be proud of you.
I see you're collecting akai tape recorders like me! Gr8. My first one was the GX-210D autoreverse, bought in 75 and used extensively in my first synth projects and recordings in 77-79... Before I bought my first Revox. Still have it, works perfectly, like my 4000D and D pro, while in the meantime, my A77s and B77s had to go several times for maintenance or repair... Akai (and Teac) reel-to-reel are as indestructible as Tascam, Nakamichi or Technics cassette tape decks!
Very interesting effects - nice one!
Hmm. I think the tapes acts like hdd
Teach me your jedi ways
OOooh SoooOO gritty .its sickening
crazy ... i love it ... uhmmmm so pure!!!!
Gorgeous.
The coolest. Absolute.
Did I say this is awesome already?
super geiler bass analog tape)

Excellent, excellent!! Although I'd wager that you don't get much sleep? Keep up the great work (^_X)
This is awesome. 👍👍👍👍👍🎹🎧🎛😃
sounds like a phone dialing
Nerd. NERD.
I'm jealous. :)
Yeeeessssss.......Analog!!!!
Very Cool! Hook it all up!
AKAI 4000DB RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE. Also AKAI on top left but can't place the model... anyone?
Im pretty sure a akai gx 210d without the cover on the heads, and the Teac Tascam is a 80-8 I think
oh wow, respect. this is great
wow, a cool walllllllllll
this is beyond awesome...
ah man so good thank you
Fantastic work !!!*****
