I believe that the rimfire scopes are the most practical. The only difference between rimfire and normal Leupold scopes is the parallax- it'll still work with any rifle. 60yrds is way more practical and more realistic if you ever really need your rifle
I have an order in now for the new Tikka rimfire rifle and this looks like a perfect 'companion' scope for this rifle too. I'm impressed with this Leupold scope performance. Thanks for the time it took you to make this video Ozzie.

Great review..but it annoys me when magazine reviewers do the adjustment test but never check on whether the group alters position when adjusting the magnification..as you know, and mentioned, when you are hunting it is rare to alter the dials, but very common to change the power factor..ie..in the scrub or in the open areas..l would love to see all reviewers cover this side of testing..you sound like someone who hunts so you can see my point..great to see reviews on Aussie available stuff

Thanks for the review, nice scope for the price. Although i think 3-9 power with a forty mil objective is just a bit of an overkill for a rimfire scope. 1.5-4 or 2-7 maybe, with a simple duplex reticle.
A while back I swapped out the Nikon I was using on my Howa mini action for a Leupold VX1 and it’s a vast improvement. The Nikon was an adequate optic for the money but the Leupold is lighter and the clarity is vastly better.
I've got the 1.5-4x model. It's held up to a fair amount of .270; hopefully it handles mine/ranch duty as well as the Trijicon I've got on my other rifle.
I'm not sure what you're dreading more...the recoil or the cost of shooting a 338. I have a 2x7x33 freedom on my tcr22 performance center and it’s a super clear. I like how thin the crosshairs are as well. Very easy to pin point shots
The 2-7x is what I wanted for a squirrel rifle build I'm doing this winter. For whatever reason it's been discontinued by Leupold. Looks like I'll have to get the 3-9x, which will be ok, but I would have rather had the other one.

I was looking at the rimfire VX Freedom scopes, as I have a couple VX Freedom on my centerfire hunting rifles. I'm not opposed to a 3-9x, but was wanting a 2-7x more...not sure why Leupold chose to discontinue that model.

G'Day Ozzie, Thanks for the review … however it actually swayed me AWAY from the Freedom Rimfire!! We own a few .22's and a Lithgow LA101 has a Bushnell Rimfire Optics - which uses a CDS type system to allow a dead-on hold at known ranges. It's terrific for the money, and creepy accurate … but we now want to change out the Chinese scope that came with a new packaged CZ455 Bushman Special and wanted to make sure that if we bought yet another new Bushnell that we were getting the best we could for the price. There are two major drawbacks your review disclosed in the Leupold as far as we can see. Firstly the adjustment dials don't appear to have a resettable zero mark. Straight away it rules this out as an option for us as we frequently change from standard to HV and back again, etc; secondly the hash marks don't appear to be customised for rimfire rounds as the model name may suggest …. they're simply "mil dot" type measurements. Unless I'm wrong, this would be a scope for all seasons as it were … usable on any rifle in particular. Sort of makes me wonder why Leupold named it a "rimfire" model?!?! Sincerely appreciate the detail and practicality of your reviews … and appreciate your enlightenment with this one …. I nearly made a poor purchase decision!

I have 2 VX Freedom scopes...your description of "mushy" turrets is accurate. In speaking to a Leupold rep it's because it's a plastic on plastic turret design. Have to step up to the VX3 now to get metal on metal turret adjustment. I've found that mine work fine though and hold zero. One side note...if you were to get the CDS scope in the VX Freedom line...the windage turret would be the same but the elevation turret would be like a VX3...as all the CDS turrets are the same (regardless of scope family).
Not sure if you got the scope or not but if you do, check out the rings that Warne makes specifically for the CZ rimfire rifles. They mount right to the dovetail and are rock solid.

Heya Ozzie. Revisiting an older review - hope that's ok. Was wondering if you have used the scope in field at distances around 25-30 meters, and what the image focus is like at those distances? I have the older 3-9 by 33 EFR (adjustable objective) Leupold rimfire scope but our bunnies are way more jittery now, and there's little time to adjust the AO between distances (my AO has always been a little tight to move) - downside is if you don't adjust, a 30 meter bunny at an AO adjustment of 50 meters is pretty out of focus. Was hoping the Freedom was relatively in focus at those shorter distances? Cheers.
It is crap. I put in on my Tikka .17HMR and was trying to get it roughly sighted in, none of my fancy stuff fit .17. At about 15yds. I thought I was looking through a Coke bottle. Moved it to about 25yds. and things improved but not perfect. All of this was done in the southern U.S. woods. The turrets and adjustments suck. I will have to say I love the glass and reticle but this scope is a 50 yd plus only, not for rimfires or my 22 Hornet. I want the versatility. Sorry I am talking about the same scope but with the Tri-Moa.
Noob question. What makes a scope a rimfire scope vs a centerfire scope vs a muzzleloader scope? Isnt it all the same and what actually matters is the distance you want to use it, regardless if it's a rimfire or not?
So a couple of things...first, and probably most drastic difference is that almost all fixed parallax centerfire scopes are set to 100 yards. Most rimfire scopes are set closer (50 yards, but I believe Leupold sets this at 60 yards). That just means that if you tend to shoot a rimfire at shorter distances, a rimfire scope would be the better option. Another difference can be build quality/durability. Not every rimfire scope can handle the recoil of a centerfire rifle. In the case of Leupold I believe this rimfire scope can handle the recoil fine. Rimfire specific scopes also tend to be a little lighter overall, which is helpful on a lighter rimfire rifle. Lastly, I would say that the reticle is also sometimes made for rimfire type ballistics. Again, this Leupold is just MOA hash marks so could work for anything, but there are some scopes that have rimfire/caliber specific reticles...such as a scope made for .17hmr.
How’s the performance in terms of sharpness/clarity compared to the v3xi 3.5-10x40 cds? And the tracking? I wish they can put a tri moa reticle for a v3xi..
RAM's REPUBLIC I bought a vx rifleman in 3-9 ×40 from cleavers for a cheap price, the image is clearer and sharper than my vx-1 4 - 12 x 40 from 10 years ago.
ozziereviews - sweet - I just ordered a VX-Freedom 4-12x40 Tri-MOA . It was actually slightly cheaper than the VX-1 4-12 Duplex that a bought a few years ago.
Depends on what mount you have on the rifle. If it's the standard weaver style scope bases, probably medium height rings. If you have a picatinny rail, you might be able to get away with low rings.
I put a Leupold VX-HOG 1-4x24 on mine and would say it is great for this gun. I've shot light cowboy loads up to hot HSM 430 gr hard cast and 405 gr Buffalo Bore. The scope has stayed perfect zero for 3 years/500 rounds and the glass is outstanding for the price.
I can't answer for him but ring height depends on a few factors. If you're using weaver style mounts that are on the action, you'll probably need med height rings with a 40mm objective. Depends of course on how high a company makes their med rings. If you mount the scope using a picatinny rail, you can usually get away with slightly lower rings, in this example low rings vs medium. It all depends on what eye relief you need and how the rail is built (some have an overhang towards the front that can interfere with your scope bell). It may be expensive but what I've done in the past is found rings I like using and bought low, med and high of the same ones. As I've used them on different rifles I've then replaced the size I used...always keeping one of each height around. I've found I have used low and med far more often than high rings. Hope that helps.
You do not need a warranty card with Leupold. You can register the scope on their website if you have an account. Otherwise you can just contact them if you need warranty repair. You do not need a receipt and do not have to be the original owner to get service. They're excellent to deal with.
Is it easy to get cheap scope covers for this scope? The flip-up Leupold ones are crazy expensive. I'm trying to decide between this and the VX-1 3-9x40, but leaning more toward the VX-1 because it comes with scope covers.
The Leupold ones ARE expensive...but they screw into the scope and are excellent. So if you can overcome the price I don't think you'll be unhappy with the covers.
The way you fine guys pronounce "aluminum" is quite striking to us in the USA, like Vanna White added a vowel and syllable to the metric system. :) "A-loom-in-numb" (4 syllable's) "Al-a-min-(e)-um" (5 syllable's) I know we pronounce words differently, but I think it is rare they the same word can have different number of syllable's. I think the pronunciation of a vowel that I don't see in the word, makes you guys wrong. :)
The guy who discovered aluminium first called it alumium, then changed it to aluminum, then later changed it to aluminium, so actually we are more up to date.

I suggest we take our heritage back, starting with calling it Aluminum, as the man did who discovered it's use as a metal. :)

The "Rimfire" designated scopes will have their parallax fixed at 60yds whereas a standard Riflescope will have its parallax fixed at 150yds.

I'm pretty sure Mil is for working out distance to target isn't it? I would go with MOA personally.

Would a leupold patrol 3- be good on a marlin 1895 sbl
I put a Leupold VX-HOG 1-4x24 on mine and would say it is great for this gun. I've shot light cowboy loads up to hot HSM 430 gr hard cast and 405 gr Buffalo Bore. The scope has stayed perfect zero for 3 years/500 rounds and the glass is outstanding for the price.

I can't answer for him but ring height depends on a few factors. If you're using weaver style mounts that are on the action, you'll probably need med height rings with a 40mm objective. Depends of course on how high a company makes their med rings. If you mount the scope using a picatinny rail, you can usually get away with slightly lower rings, in this example low rings vs medium. It all depends on what eye relief you need and how the rail is built (some have an overhang towards the front that can interfere with your scope bell).
It may be expensive but what I've done in the past is found rings I like using and bought low, med and high of the same ones. As I've used them on different rifles I've then replaced the size I used...always keeping one of each height around. I've found I have used low and med far more often than high rings.

I think the minimum magnification is too powerfull. Around 1.5 or 2 would be better. Think of a running rat so you get the point.
There is a 2-7 power i think.
Did you get a warranty card?
You do not need a warranty card with Leupold. You can register the scope on their website if you have an account. Otherwise you can just contact them if you need warranty repair. You do not need a receipt and do not have to be the original owner to get service. They're excellent to deal with.

Is it easy to get cheap scope covers for this scope? The flip-up Leupold ones are crazy expensive.
I'm trying to decide between this and the VX-1 3-9x40, but leaning more toward the VX-1 because it comes with scope covers.

The Leupold ones ARE expensive...but they screw into the scope and are excellent. So if you can overcome the price I don't think you'll be unhappy with the covers.
Make a video for the 6.5 CM... tri m.o.a reticle VX Freedom 3x9... I have the setup just don’t have the time. Busy busy...
The way you fine guys pronounce "aluminum" is quite striking to us in the USA, like Vanna White added a vowel and syllable to the metric system. :)

I know we pronounce words differently, but I think it is rare they the same word can have different number of syllable's. I think the pronunciation of a vowel that I don't see in the word, makes you guys wrong. :)
The guy who discovered aluminium first called it alumium, then changed it to aluminum, then later changed it to aluminium, so actually we are more up to date.

@@LittleTed1000 It was a British Chemist, (Humphry Davis 1812) who named it Aluminum, and spelled it that way. It used to be spelled the same in Europe and the USA. We have no idea why Europe changed it. There seems to be no reason at all, or even any names that did it. Probably just some bums, (political scientists, for example), who wanted a piece of the fame by renaming slice of the work of Davis, and calling it their own, who ever they are.
I suggest we take our heritage back, starting with calling it Aluminum, as the man did who discovered it's use as a metal. :)
