I think the challenge for any creator/craftsman is to find the balance between this trifecta: 1)what clients/viewers want to buy/watch, 2) what you're good at, and 3) what you like doing/ making
Build videos are the secret! Weekly updates only work for those who have a unique personality. A talking head video is almost guaranteed to kill traffic.
Just make it. It doesn't have to be the most unique thing ever. Each build, even when someone else did it. Will still be individual to the builder. And Build it for you. Building is fun. The complications are worth figuring out.

I am one that just started viewing your work. I like it, it is very narrative, Some times too much, but I can handle it. Explaining things on :"How to " mode is not easy task, and your communication skills are quite good. Some guys might find it a little too dense, but reality is that I HATE those "10 hours work in 10 minutes videos is fast motion: They suck!! So what we, the audience like is the ability to learn from you, because we also are DIY people, searching for viable solutions, and for the Sportsman Fabricator like me, your content is super good, so don't let the NEGATIVES rob your sleep, because there are more like me out there, and believe me way more than you can imagine. Keep up, build stuff, sale, raffle, donate, .. and you will gain more audience and followers. Lovessssssss!!
Cool thing about TH-cam is that you don’t have to do anything to entertain people if you already have the followers all you have to do is just be you people will always follow the process🙏🔥👍😉
Nice job Brian. Couple of thoughts: Keep your water to refractory ratio spot on. Maybe fab up a small vibration table to cast on. Most refractory will not flow when properly mixed with out a bit of vibration. Does wonders to remove the air bubbles and fill all voids. That said, well done.
I need to hit up your podcast, but your channel is one of my absolute favs, not because of the effort poured into the cinematic aspects (I truly appreciate that effort though - just not required), but simply due to who you are, how you approach things, etc... I've been a maker all of my life, leather, steel, and wood. Nothing professional, but I do sell and gift my work, but certainly a serious hobbyist. You give so much inspiration to me and I know many thousands of others. I listen to your podcast for the business side, and I have learned so much about that aspect. I can't wait to get a ribbon burner and a forge from you, I made my own gas forge and have been getting by with it for 5 years, but I do need an evenheat, but that is money down the road. I am looking to go with more batches of knives and stepping away from the custom orders, scaling my business up, hopefully retiring from my day job soon in November. The demand locally here in Tucson is overwhelming, for all of my hand made products, so I'm not sure I even need to advertise on multi-media outlets, we will see how scaling up my business moves forward. Its very interesting seeing you work through the problems with prototyping any product mentally and physically. As with any product the pains we go through to work out the processes to produce a high quality product. Thank you for everything you do, I look forward to more frequent TH-cam videos. Such as yourself, I sit in the morning drinking my coffee and updating my education through TH-cam and Instagram mostly. My desktop monitors are only 1080 resolution but I noticed how crisp the shot looks combined with the bright lighting up front to stand out from the dark background. It is similar to when people use a shallow depth of field to put attention on the subject.
Hey dude! 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻 Set up a peristaltic pump to dispense the refractory into each cavity at the same time. Clean, and means you can put your attention on another element while it pumps in.
@@HouseMadeUS Graco made a drywall texture machine that used this type of pump......where arms or rollers squish the outside of a hose to push it through the hose without the material flowing through a traditional pumping mechanism. My first thought was a small container like the measuring cup but with a spout or partial funnel built in.
Yep, definitely want to see more...and the thing is I want to see how you work. One of your first videos I watched taught me to oil the tool not the work!. So everyone will pick up something from a video and it might be something that you didn't even intend to cover or you just do it as part of your normal routine. All worth while... keep going man!

I was wondering where you went, I thought the TH-cam algorithm had something to do with it. I do like seeing what you're up to in your shop, I always get some inspiration or a good idea or two from your videos. I'm in the process of building a ribbon burner forge and very close to finishing it up. I took a hiatus from IG awhile back and haven't got back into it (I'm a creature of habit, so now not in the habit of checking IG). Anyway, I'm totally cool with whatever you toss up on YT brother! But of course, do what you gotta do :) I gotta catch up on the podcasts, haven't been working in a location with good cell reception, y'all keep me company and help with keeping my monkey mind going off the rails :)
How about using a big caulk gun type of thing? Maybe repurpose one of those jerky cannons? Something that can squeeze out the cement in a very controlled manner that has a large enough nozzle to not have a overly difficult back pressure that makes it too difficult to squeeze the grip repeatedly. Also needs to have a large enough reservoir to fill the mold. Needs to have a long enough nozzle to get to the bottom, and narrow enough to fit between rows of straws, but not so narrow that it creates back pressure fatigue. Or maybe even a large sausage stuffer with a hose off the output rather than sausage casing. It would be easy to refill and still offer all the other benefits. Just typing as I'm thinking...

Brian, reach out to Mark Krause for a different type of burner. Ribbons are difficult to tune and ensure air / gas delivery to all the ports. Better option, multiple single ports of just straight 2" - 3" expanded burner, drilled out of soft brick. Trust me. Better avenue.

Great stuff Brian! Definitely gonna check the ribbon burners out when you get it all lined out. I've been looking into ribbon burners for some time for my forge to get rid of the cold spots in my forge and get a more consistent heat throughout the forge. I've had a revolution 2x72 for about 9 months now and I love it! So I'm definitely excited to see more things I can get to improve my knife making.

Especially if you do bigger batches than 6 at a time.. but yeah some kinda gravity fed piping bag with a valve hose or something? Get a helper to squeeze the bag lol somethingbya can easily flush out with a hose when done.
I am am an apprentice with ABS and have been tooling up for months. The Revolution 4 and Trutilt are in a slow and loving progress. I am presently on the tracking arm. I held it off for last. I found your products on YT and have enjoyed ALL of this very much. I know that ribbon burner forge is my FOC and I have seen burner entry from the side, only elevated to enter the highest point and the walls bias a swirling action. The sweetspot of an evenly heated area can be proven in your design software? I was blessed to find affordable steel and am brand new to welding (@51). I am doing a 25t press with 1.5 x 5 cr flat bar, to be keyed for H frame. I have spent Ks and will spend Ks more before basic tooling done. Sir, I am an ISA certified CCST and Journeyman Wireman of 20 + years; Heat treating oven, PID control....screams to be house made. I would be honored and serious in research for an oven. Prove your forge heat balance and have true heat control for HT in your forge and that makes your product peerless if my research is up to date. Thermocouples will outperform RTD sensors for the temp range. If a cryo loop can be accessorized, you have the trifect. Everything that you have done on YT never made me think twice. You have been a boost in my journey.
Jud, I really appreciate this comment. Yes I am working on more projects, at this point I am at my max and need to hire someone to help me. (that has been done, he starts next week) - The burner is on the side to provide radiant heat in the forge and not direct heat that can leech the carbon from the steel. Also you get a more even heat throughout the forge this way (No cold spots)

I’m curious if you could use an admixture to make your mix more viscous & fluid, like scc. It would flow around the straws better and level itself. I use scc at my company. You're doing something wrong if you don't have negative trolls! It will only get worse as your audience grows. It's a small percentage but they are "vocal" and as you hit 100k, 500k, a million subscribers that small percentage gets to be bigger nubers. Just block and ignore. I luv your channel and still need a Revolution Sander kit one of these days. Weekly video or even twice a week will make a big difference. I like the actual how to's but you're a great guy and I'll watch your day to day adventures as well.
Did you by any chance watch the Cleetus McFarland podcast? Roman Attwood mentioned that he knew his channel was growing when he had more hate comments. When people are all nice, he is just coasting without growth. Cleetus said he tries to avoid controversial content on his channel, which has worked, but many creators need that edge to get people's interest with the massive amount of videos there are to watch. th-cam.com/video/9GIK_MqikZA/w-d-xo.html I built my own cnc plasma table but decided to just buy the laser cut revolution kit. It has worked out great and I built a revolving attachment that has a flat platen, small wheel holder, and slack belt sections, with 2" and 4" wheels for contours. It was the design of a guy that goes by Helicopter John. He made his machine out of aluminum but he shared the cad files and I modified them to fit my needs. The 3hp 3ph iron horse motor and a 7" drive wheel has been great.

Try a container that has a spout or funnel built in, similar to a garden watering can. I think I have seen some with open spouts so they are easier to clean. Cleetus McFarland was on the Roman Attwood podcast: th-cam.com/video/9GIK_MqikZA/w-d-xo.html They talked about how they grew their channels. Roman said the channel grew more when there were bad comments and haters and when things are peaceful, they just coast on by with no new growth. Controversial content helps him where Cleetus said he avoids anything that may cause hate towards his crew. They also said it is a matter of putting in lots of effort, doing what they are comfortable with, and ignoring the haters since there will always be some. You are right about viewers just following certain people to see what they experience. People subscribed to my channel with short videos to share with friends, not made for entertainment. They obviously were interested in mechanical stuff and at least for me, the subject matter and information are much more important than flashy camera work and editing. It seems 10 minute videos are a good length to make money for creators and it is enough for many viewers to not feel shorted. Catching up and showing a few aspects of your work, or a single topic if there is a lot to show, is cool to see. It seems that people who post at least once per week have good subscriber counts.

Yes and for grip into the refractory. I have slightly modified them since I filmed this. (Added more and made two into a T shape.

Great stuff Brian! Definitely gonna check the ribbon burners out when you get it all lined out. I've been looking into ribbon burners for some time for my forge to get rid of the cold spots in my forge and get a more consistent heat throughout the forge. I've had a revolution 2x72 for about 9 months now and I love it! So I'm definitely excited to see more things I can get to improve my knife making.

Especially if you do bigger batches than 6 at a time.. but yeah some kinda gravity fed piping bag with a valve hose or something? Get a helper to squeeze the bag lol somethingbya can easily flush out with a hose when done.

I am am an apprentice with ABS and have been tooling up for months. The Revolution 4 and Trutilt are in a slow and loving progress. I am presently on the tracking arm. I held it off for last.
I found your products on YT and have enjoyed ALL of this very much. I know that ribbon burner forge is my FOC and I have seen burner entry from the side, only elevated to enter the highest point and the walls bias a swirling action. The sweetspot of an evenly heated area can be proven in your design software?
I was blessed to find affordable steel and am brand new to welding (@51). I am doing a 25t press with 1.5 x 5 cr flat bar, to be keyed for H frame. I have spent Ks and will spend Ks more before basic tooling done.
Sir, I am an ISA certified CCST and Journeyman Wireman of 20 + years; Heat treating oven, PID control....screams to be house made. I would be honored and serious in research for an oven. Prove your forge heat balance and have true heat control for HT in your forge and that makes your product peerless if my research is up to date. Thermocouples will outperform RTD sensors for the temp range. If a cryo loop can be accessorized, you have the trifect.
Everything that you have done on YT never made me think twice. You have been a boost in my journey.
I am leaning to a gas valve that has a feed back, commanded by temp to sustain set point.
Jud, I really appreciate this comment. Yes I am working on more projects, at this point I am at my max and need to hire someone to help me. (that has been done, he starts next week) - The burner is on the side to provide radiant heat in the forge and not direct heat that can leech the carbon from the steel. Also you get a more even heat throughout the forge this way (No cold spots)

Ok are these power burners? Are you just shoot gas through the burners and primary and secondary air is found in what ever these burners in?
They are forced air burners. They have a blower and an air/fuel mix.

I'm on a similar one with the same intrests! I'm at the beginning stages of the 2x72 belt grinder from your plans I bought. (Have all parts cut out and have tube steel in vinegar ready to start welding it together 🤘)

I like your content. The process looks like pouring cement a bit. I wonder if you are familiar with self consolidating concrete?? I’m curious if you could use an admixture to make your mix more viscous & fluid, like scc. It would flow around the straws better and level itself. I use scc at my company. You're doing something wrong if you don't have negative trolls! It will only get worse as your audience grows. It's a small percentage but they are "vocal" and as you hit 100k, 500k, a million subscribers that small percentage gets to be bigger nubers. Just block and ignore.
I luv your channel and still need a Revolution Sander kit one of these days. Weekly video or even twice a week will make a big difference. I like the actual how to's but you're a great guy and I'll watch your day to day adventures as well.
Did you by any chance watch the Cleetus McFarland podcast? Roman Attwood mentioned that he knew his channel was growing when he had more hate comments. When people are all nice, he is just coasting without growth. Cleetus said he tries to avoid controversial content on his channel, which has worked, but many creators need that edge to get people's interest with the massive amount of videos there are to watch. th-cam.com/video/9GIK_MqikZA/w-d-xo.html I built my own cnc plasma table but decided to just buy the laser cut revolution kit. It has worked out great and I built a revolving attachment that has a flat platen, small wheel holder, and slack belt sections, with 2" and 4" wheels for contours. It was the design of a guy that goes by Helicopter John. He made his machine out of aluminum but he shared the cad files and I modified them to fit my needs. The 3hp 3ph iron horse motor and a 7" drive wheel has been great.

Try a container that has a spout or funnel built in, similar to a garden watering can. I think I have seen some with open spouts so they are easier to clean. Cleetus McFarland was on the Roman Attwood podcast: th-cam.com/video/9GIK_MqikZA/w-d-xo.html They talked about how they grew their channels. Roman said the channel grew more when there were bad comments and haters and when things are peaceful, they just coast on by with no new growth. Controversial content helps him where Cleetus said he avoids anything that may cause hate towards his crew. They also said it is a matter of putting in lots of effort, doing what they are comfortable with, and ignoring the haters since there will always be some. You are right about viewers just following certain people to see what they experience. People subscribed to my channel with short videos to share with friends, not made for entertainment. They obviously were interested in mechanical stuff and at least for me, the subject matter and information are much more important than flashy camera work and editing. It seems 10 minute videos are a good length to make money for creators and it is enough for many viewers to not feel shorted. Catching up and showing a few aspects of your work, or a single topic if there is a lot to show, is cool to see. It seems that people who post at least once per week have good subscriber counts.
