how i afford to spearfish every day, living on a tropical island (& why I can't afford not to)

  • If you’re interested in learning more about freediving, I recommend taking a freediving course. But in the meantime, you can read this book about humans’ natural ability to dive deep, how freediving was used in the past and how it is used today:
    amzn.to/2Yrzzrg
If you want to learn more about spearfishing, I recommend learning about freediving first. After that, you should read this book by Terry Maas, an OG spearfisherman. It will inspire you to explore to world and search for big fish:
    amzn.to/3hrtnbi
This next book is about how being in and around water is scientifically proven to improve your mental and physical health, creativity, and even improve your hearing and eyesight:
    amzn.to/3hqJOoz
Another great freediving book is Oxygen, by William Trubridge. Trubridge is the deepest “no fins” diver in the world, able to travel to 334 feet (102 meters) and back on one breath (without fins). Oxygen tells about his journey from a beginner freediver, blacking out on a 30-something meter dive (relatively shallow for a freediver) to becoming the deepest in the world:
    amzn.to/2UDC6NU
The last book I’d recommend is One Breath. It tells the tragic story of an American freediving champion who pushed past his comfort zone one too many times. It is a great resource for learning about the dangers of diving unsafely, but this book actually made me feel a lot safer about freediving - because the things that went wrong in this unfortunate story are very easily avoidable:
    amzn.to/37pgE4q
I use this awesome giant plastic case to protect my spearfishing/freediving gear while traveling (it's also good for skis and that sort of thing) :
    amzn.to/2BZK8tX
Gopros are only rated to take to -30 feet (-10 meters) so you need to put it in a plastic case to protect it when going deeper. A plastic case also stops the water from messing with the touch screen. This is the one I use and I’m very happy with it:
    amzn.to/2C5mcpe
These are the carbon fiber fins I use:
    amzn.to/3e3uFHI
This is my freediving watch (great value, IMO):
    amzn.to/3fo0GKQ
I use this rashguard when I’m in warm water and don’t need extra warmth but still want a chest loading pad for my gun:
    amzn.to/2YBS2kU
I live in Amed, Bali, Indonesia, and freedive and spearfish every day. This is how I got here.

Samuel that's definitely a rare occasion!!! that has always been the case or modus operandi with barracudas, they are what I call flash or slash feeders they react to certain things with a quickness that is probably close to the speed of lightning!!! and no they don't normally attack people, I don't believe they ever have, but situations like what you described have happened quite a bit I recall a story of a woman in Key West she jumped off a dock to take a little dip with all her jewelry on as soon as she hit the water she was slashed by a Cuda! Take it from me who grew up in southeast Florida around marinas, docks, Bridges, ect.... cuda's love to set up under a big sailboat or yacht at a marina... or in a lot of cases the dock itself they are incredible with their ability to remain absolutely Motionless while they are hanging out, they wait for opportunity And when they see a quick Flash they do what I call a slash or Flash attack!! they Rush their prey as quick as Lightning it's amazing!!! As Samuel said here it was a clean bite..... that is the most amazing thing about a cuda, if you catch one and examine his the teeth they are angled in a million directions.... some straight but most are angled / very jaggedy looking butt they make a bite that is as clean as a butcher's knife!!!! Looking at their teeth you would think it would be a jagged cut but it never is, it is a straight clean cut every damn time !! a Precision cutting machine!! When I was probably around five or six years old I was hanging out one day with my father who was a commercial fisherman in Jupiter Florida and we were always allowed to go fish with little hand lines off the dock, I dropped a pinfish one time on a handline with no weight, just a hook and leader and as soon as the pinfish hit the water a cuda Rush from under the dock and clipped my pinfish straight in half with a precision that was mind-boggling possibly straighter and cleaner than a butcher's knife anyway LOL long live the Barracuda they are a special odd individual to say the least..🎣🤸‍♂️🤙

    • @curlysshuffle1157
      @curlysshuffle1157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Once again that's one of the most amazing things about barracudas their teeth are so Jagged and angled in so many directions very gnarly looking but yet every time they bite a fish if they clip it in half or whatever or clip it off at the head the cut is the cleanest thing you'll ever see!! I've seen it multiple times as my father was a commercial fisherman and I have seen 5 for 6 foot cuda's go airborne in the late 70s when I was a kid on Dad's boat and seen them come flying out of nowhere and clip a 15 to 20 lb red snapper cleanly in half right behind the boat within inches or a foot or two from the transom!!! They seriously have the bite of a razor knife or a piano chord straight up clean, it's almost like their mouths are programmed with a computer in a manufacturing plant to make the same cut over and over with Precision, it's mind-boggling can't imagine the horror of having your whole hand clipped at the wrist in one bite absolutely wow!!

Hey man! I am very interested in doing this. My brother lived in Malang, Java Indonesia last year with a host family sent over there sponsored by the state department to become fluent in a rare dialect over there. Anyways he is giving me all sorts of crash courses on things but because he lived with a host family, he doesn’t have much advice on renting a house or an apartment or room. Is there some sort of website or service that will help you find semi-long leases like 3-6 months? I know Airbnb might have a couple that offer monthly rates but not many. Also, I currently have about $20,000 USD saved up with about $4,000 available credit and no debt here at all! I’ve pretty much sold everything including my car and basically anything that doesn’t fit in a suitcase. I’m 31 and single and other than cancelling my gym membership lol I think I’m ready to go! So yea financially I think I’m in a good spot but wondering what you would tell your brother or friend to do before they left as far as financial freedom?

I often think about how great it would be to not work. Or at least as much. But when I have my days off I realize a schedule is very important to me and delayed gratification makes my hobbies even better! However, what you said at the end really resonates. It helps me realize Pursuing pleasure doesn’t always make for a good life, you need balance. But most importantly you need to expand upon what makes you most happy and interests you, Pursue that and you will be filled with just as much passion as this spear fisher haha
