Man does he know how to make the absolute most out of every opportunity to play. Such a smart aggressive player.
why did the pitcher not throw it better to the catcher when he stole home? isn't that ironic
@@nofurtherwest3474probably because he was caught off guard and not expecting that at all
@@nofurtherwest3474 Brewers did a terrible job holding him on 2nd and 3rd. Nobody even went to cover 3rd when he stole that bag and then when he was on 3rd, the 3rd baseman was too far off the bag so he got a big lead and when the pitcher got the ball he had his back turned and took a lazy walk back to the mound and De La Cruz took notice and took advantage.
@@nofurtherwest3474because brewers were lazy and probably didn’t read scouting report
@@nofurtherwest3474because most times they don't whip the ball back and forth. They lob it. In between pitches is usually when the pitcher is thinking about the situation and what he's going to do next. That's why people like EDLC and Acuna are so dangerous. You can't take a moment off.
The fact that just about every person in that stadium saw what he was doing before the pitcher had any clue is amazing. I love listening to the crowd's reaction, which gets the pitcher to finally turn around. Elly knew the only person who mattered was the guy holding the ball. Those are some incredible instincts.
I love that the crowd is thrilled by what happened in spite of the fact that it's an opposing player that did it.

Just like they used to tell me in little league ball, "just go out there and have fun!" But now you get paid.
He KNEW that if he could steal 3rd with no one covering the base, he could take that HUGE lead towards home with no threat to throw behind him. This kid is something else!!
Agreed. This was poor play by the Brewers 3rd baseman!
I’m inclined to call the stealing of 3rd defensive indifference. That’s how unbelievably lackadaisical the 3rd basemen was. But I guess it counts as a steal if the pitcher or catcher make a motion to throw? Or can it not be indifference if you’re the lead runner? Is it only in walk off situations? Kinda weird to me. I don’t even want to take away from Elly, it was just frustrating to watch. Stealing second and home were obviously 100% legit though
Yes this kid is something else!!
*such
Don't think it can be indifference because they were holding him on 2nd before the pitch. Not 100% sure, but that would make sense to me.
The first Cincinnati Red to do that since Greasy Neale in 1919. You gotta love a name like that.
Greasy Neale was a Pro Football player and longtime Coach too, coaching from 1915-1950... his baseball cards are more bases on this 2sport thing for value, bringing in 2X common price usually
@@tamehamehaprints3604 another fun fact, Greasy is also in the college football and pro football hall of fames :)

Keep it greasy so it'll go down easy.
Elly Cruise
I've always considered the triple steal the most exciting play in baseball. This young man just added an exclamation mark to that thought.
He'll probably have a few inside the parkers before seasons end, I'm a Cubs fan but this dude's exciting to watch
Scratch out baseball and make it in all of sports and I would agree. This has to be one of the most unique and difficult athletic feats to pull off
I don't even watch baseball and I can admit this is absolutely INSANE.. What a player!!!
Same, until my dad brought him up in converstation a couple weeks ago. We ended up going to the Reds game this weekend. My first time ever going to a baseball game. All because of De La Cruz!
I’ve been watching baseball for over 20 years and I have never seen a ball player literally steal 1st to home that quickly on no errors. Unbelievable this kid.
How do you steal WITH errors?
@@bbigjohnson069 Easy, you steal then the catcher tries to throw you out and the throw goes into the outfield and the runner advances.
@@tacomawild8750 SB for 2nd goes to 3rd on the error E2. That's not "steal 1st to home" if there's an error. Advance is what you meant probably.
@@bbigjohnson069 I didn’t mean steal first to home in one play man..I meant consecutively steal first to home as de la Cruz did, without any errors on throws, etc…
@@bbigjohnson069 the fact of the matter is, even without your technicalities, there’s almost no one with this kids speed that can score a run solely based on his speed and base-running ability
Baseball has been played forever with most of the activity long-since becoming "routine" ("routine flyball", "routine groundout" etc.,). If a player has the ability, and opportunity to execute outside of the _routine_ , that's when things can get pretty exciting.
How can you not love this kid! Plays baseball the way your supposed to! Great for the game! His energy has turned this team around in a hurry!!
I wish the rules allowed Elly to take first on the wild throw to home, so he could steal all the bases again.

Every day I’m like….ok, what’s Elly going to do today? He’s fun to watch. These rookies for the Reds have energized the team.
They have something like 8 rookies all playing great ball and genuinely contributing and none of them are making over 3 mil. Think Votto comes off the books this year and then the Reds have an enormous amount of money available to spend and amazing talent that's costing them nothing. And Greene, Abbott, and Lodolo look like a legitimate high end rotation. Plus, Diaz is becoming a lockdown closer. The Reds have very serious potential. Pick up a good veteran catcher for leadership and a few bullpen pieces, and they could maybe make a run.

That’s taking the saying “take what your given” to a whole new level!!!!
I can’t watch this enough. Been a Reds fan and a baseball fan for almost 40 years. Never seen that before. Crazy. Also Benson just holding his head in the dugout is hilarious.
As a Braves fan that’s been able to watch Acuna the last 5 years, this guy reminds me of that skill level with Oneil Cruz height and length. Bat flies through the zone. Runs like a gazelle. This dude is the real deal and should be a problem for years to come. Man I love baseball.
I feel that. Bruh I do too
DeLa Cruz, also has a very strong throwing arm.
Elly is an absolute joy to watch! I’m a devoted Mariner’s fan, but I love that everyone is coming together across baseball (and maybe coming into baseball for the first time) just to wonder at this guy’s talent! Most of all, he plays with joy.
I have never been a fan of baseball, but here I am because of Elly. That is a dude I could watch the game for. I don't know baseball much at all, but I know a triple steal like that is something truly special.
I grew up in Cincinnati and went to many games at Riverfront Stadium from 71 - 75. This guy is a throwback to the big red machine, and guys like Morgan and Rose must be loving what they are seeing. This attitude has been missing from baseball for a long time, and is amazing to see. Welcome to the bigs, EDLC!
Elly is a monster. Baseball needed this season big time. The increased runs, hits, stolen bases, etc were much needed. Hope there’s more changes to come because I believe the game still needs another uptick in overall offense.
plus the best change of all...the PITCH CLOCK!!...im loving these 2 and half hour games.
Finally somebody for ESPN to talk about besides sluggers and HR numbers. The kid is batting .328.
Now we just need robo umps that won't call balls as strikes!
Agreed pitch clock was everything to make the sport good again.
They should change it so that homers count for 2 points
The way that Elly can completely RUIN a teams defense is unreal. He had the brewers absolutely lost when he stole home. His hitting is getting more consistent and he’s learning to be aggressive at the right times, not just all the time.
This kid is something special and I can’t believe he’s on the Reds. Finally we have a team to rally behind!
Manfred lets everyone make the playoffs though so it only matters in the postseason “tournament” which shouldn’t even exist
@Formedvoid- Enjoy him while he lasts in Cincy, and it won't be long. The Mets, Yanks, Dodgers, Red Sox etc have pockets that will pay this kid $ beyond what the Reds could even comprehend.
Honestly let him be aggressive all the time. The last thing you want to do is mess with what's working.

This is an unbelievable display of skill & heads up play. But the pitching coach needs to ask that man why he thought it was a good idea to turn his back on a runner who just stole 2 bases in 3 pitches.
Yes, bad scouting and a lack of attention. De La Cruz seems like the type of player/baserunner who can sense when the pitcher is lazy.
Little League stuff right there
Hahahahahahaha!!!! F’real😂
Clearly no one expected such a daring play. Stealing home is rare enough - but it's virtually always while a pitcher is pitching to a batter. I've never heard of a steal home while the pitcher has the ball and is not even pitching. The element of surprise was key.
@@sheilamacdougal4874plus the pitcher's post-pitch habits are key. Even on the very next pitch after Elly stole home, you'll notice he pitches, walks slightly off the mound, gets the ball, turns his back, shrugs his shoulders, then gets back on the bump. The turn away and the shrug, not looking at 3B, the third baseman staying at his spot, plus adding the shock factor of the steal in-between pitches, opens that window. Not to mention Elly is fast enough to pull it off.
MLB is absolutely loaded with young & exciting talent.
