Black Hawk Down is absolutely worth it on 4K Blu-ray, video and audio are reference quality in my opinion. It looks so much better than the old blu. The original audio is also included which is nice
holy crap i was blown away when i saw this on my lg p9. i love that on each bead of sweat there is an individual reflection. so realistic. the colors are so rich as well. gives depth and beauty
Film- to-digital transfers always looked way better than digital-to-digital transfers to me. Watched M.I 3 few days ago, and the colors, contrast and sharpness were top notch
Just bought me a new Sony 4k TV and 4k player as well as a new soundsystem, in the black Friday sales. Black hawk down is gonna be my first 4k film I've ever seen when all this arrives. I've been on my old 1080p HD Sony for the last 12 year's. Can't wait 🤯🤯🤯
My first 4k TV was the 2018 Vizio E series. So many 4k movies were pretty dim (around 250-300nits) but still looked very sharp. BHD was pretty dim on my display. I just recently bought the Sony x900f can do around 800 to 1000nits. And played this movie and it looked amazing. So yes, your TVs peak brightness will make a difference in picture
"Ridleygrams" are director Ridley Scott's personal shot list thumbnail sketches that he draws before each shooting day due to his background as a fine artist and illustrator. So they're like quick story boards of his intentions.
When Ridley was good except some shockers in the 90's and lately but this is a fantastic movie, great cinematography, good action movie. one of the best.
I have watched this movie many time since DVD and I pretty much memorized the audio track. I guess if anyone hasn’t heard the track, would be quite impressed. I always thought it lacks the constancy of the low end. You get a lot of the nice sound of gunfire and movements throughout the channel, but you definitely don’t feel anything in your chest.
Hey good content there . I just snagged it from eBay for $15. Now I don't have it on Blu Ray I have it on SD DVD. So I'm sure it will be worth it. Sony OLED and Sony a7000 soundbar . Thanks my friend
Just ordered it! 12 bucks in Amazon! Thanks for the review can’t wait to watch and hear this one... just bought a new HSU USL15-MK2 sub... it sounds incredible looking forward to hearing this one in the theater room!
Among the favorites of my 4K Collection. So much superior to the old Blu Ray, which must haven released about 9 Years ago. The video codecs they did used look very outdated today. Especially the first Sony releases such as FIFTH ELEMENT, LEON THE PROFESSIONELL, STAR SHIP TROOPERS and BLACK HAWK DOWN looked merely better than an 720 p upscale of an DVD. LEON and STARSHIP TROOPERS are also state of the art 4K UHD releases in my humble opinion.
Yeah the video on the original looks awful by today’s standards. Blu ray today can still look awesome. I guess yeah the audio was the killer for the time but I don’t really remember I was younger
Are you sure subwoofer is pumping? Sparechange Shane says it's lacking in bass. To my hearing, it has descent bass, but not the kind of deep low end type like WotW (DTS-HD MA 5.1) and RP1. During combat scenes, bass not suppose to be that lacking.
There are reviews on Amazon that are really critical of the Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Those reviews are a few months old, I wonder if the issues they cite were corrected.
Regardless it's older or newer and whatever tech is it, as long as it sounds awesome. Actually I compared both LPCM5.1 vs Atmos. Atmos sounds slightly better - slightly louder, slightly more bass (although still lacking compared to some reference quality atmos).
@@liutungwei5160 Atmos should sounds better as when doing that they added 7.1 from 5 and was essentially a remaster. Louder will always sound better but isn’t necessarily better. But yeah the Atmos track is very good. I found the panning from channels to be much better
Yea the Blu Ray presentation was poor. That is why I kept my DVD version as it had both movie types and all the special features. Glad the 4K has it all now. Will defiantly upgrade. Thanks.
What the hell are you talking about? Grain has NOTHING to do with the actual camera used. You can take a 35mm camera from 1940s and get similar results. It's the film stock that is important and to an extend the lenses. The inside of the camera haven't changed that much since 100 years. Also the transition from Film to Digital will not be finished for probably the next 50 years. There are a ton of filmmakers who prefer to work with film. Don't say false things if you don't know better. As for older movies looking not as good as movie made with newer equipment... Have you seen The Shining, A Wonderful Life, Lawrence of Arabia, Patton, Citizen Kane? They look fantastic and the newly made 4K version of The Shining and A Wonderful Life are utterly breathtaking. Made with oooooold equipment.
There will be another round of upgrades when 8k hits. I have made up my mind only to buy the film on the best format at the time of release and let it be.
8k movies are not coming for at least 4 years if ever. It’s rare that things are filmed with 4K equipment. 8k equipment is not at all realistic for the next decade the only thing we would get would be upscales and the difference between 4K and 8k on upscales will be marginal
Unless they get 100% of the color spectrum to go with it, any 8k disc tech will be like selling snake oil. Maybe people with 120 inch screens sitting 3 feet away will benefit
watched this one today in 4k, the amount of grain visible is insane on the 4k version , but sometimes , especially in the beginning i noticed some weird lines / flickering on the blue backgrounds (ocean backgrounds) in the flight scenes. but the audio is insane in this one
On my Oppo 203, LGC9 65" Oled, LG SK9Y with LG SPK-8 rear speakers, there is a sound delay about 0.5 second on this 4K HDR blu ray, and that is bad enough for a war movie. But, when watching movies I usually used the pause button on the player when I have to do something else, and I did this many times while watching this 4K movie. Probably that was the cause.
Some Recommendations since you said you didn't have much left to pick up on Criterion and if I recall Battle of Algiers (Pontecorvo) was one of your favorites: Kapo (Pontecorvo) Hands Over The City (Rosi) The Organizer (Monicelli) A Face in the Crowd (Kazan) - probably one of Criterion's most important releases this year (was long OOP before) Thieves' Highway (Dassin) & for Halloween - Day of Wrath (Dreyer) Also consider doing a review of Anthroposcene: The Human Epoch when it gets released to video by Kino in the coming months, they deserve some support (th-cam.com/video/44RYqgKwfSQ/w-d-xo.html) Good job with the channel - cheers.
I'm somali, I hate this movie with a passion, portrayed Somali people but all the actors were bantu black Africans and organized ex military militia were made to look like civilians with guns and nothing more
Telling the truth about 4K, i have already disappointment, i love blu ray already but i don't know about 4K, i m not satisfy, i feel that 4K blu ray is bullshit, actually it's not worth it, even standard blu ray is better, i don't know man?
Bought this film for $10 in 4k because I remember liking it when it first came out. HOLY CRAP is it bad. Like really, really bad. I've got a 77" a80j and the atrocious helicopter special effects alone REALLY stand out with the 4k and it's overall just an incredibly insensitive trash of a movie. The only entertaining factor was seeing the absolutely MAD cast they managed to assemble. Unbelievable cast if you grew up in the 90s, early 2000s, with every single person in the 12+ person cast being a "that guy" you recognize, with even Tom Hardy in there for two minutes (long before he became big).
I love the "Upgrade?" subject. It's a very important aspect of understanding 4K media.
I don’t even own this movie on blue ray😂
Black Hawk Down is absolutely worth it on 4K Blu-ray, video and audio are reference quality in my opinion. It looks so much better than the old blu. The original audio is also included which is nice
Which version would you say is better, theatrical or extended?
@@PastorBateman7 I recommend the extended version
@@skywalking3293 Thanks
i'm happy with my purchase of Black Hawk Down on 4K. also a huge bonus comes with the extended version finally on blu-ray!
Is the extended version better than theatrical? Which one do you prefer and why??
the extended version was only available on blu-ray as a collector's edition in Japan, but was available on DVD worldwide.
holy crap i was blown away when i saw this on my lg p9. i love that on each bead of sweat there is an individual reflection. so realistic. the colors are so rich as well. gives depth and beauty
It's fun to watch this with people for the scene where they find out Nicolaj Coster Walder is in it.
Great review, as always - aprecreating the merits of a quality 35mm film-to-digital transfer.
Film- to-digital transfers always looked way better than digital-to-digital transfers to me. Watched M.I 3 few days ago, and the colors, contrast and sharpness were top notch

I've watched it on Sony's Bravia Core streaming service. It's 80mbps stream and Black Hawk Down is absolutely gorgeous.
The HDR shines in this movie. Simply awesome!

I just picked this up yesterday , 2 for £30 along with Bad Boys, looking forward to seeing it again.
Great review , what is your top 15 4k movies of all time ?

Any (non 4k) arrow video and criterion blu rays you'll recommend?
Thank you for the review.

The uncompressed audio was a huge difference at the time compared to the basic dvd
Yeah the video on the original looks awful by today’s standards. Blu ray today can still look awesome. I guess yeah the audio was the killer for the time but I don’t really remember I was younger

Speaking about atmos, can you tell me what are the best Blurays with atmos ? not 4k
I cant wait to buy this.
thanks for this review.
Such a great movie. And I made the jump to the 4K release back in the summer. I was blown away by the huge differences between Bluray and 4k
I heard that the bass is all that's a bit weak, but Jeff suggests otherwise???
Sparechange Shane said the same thing as you, and I hear the same thing.
What are your favourite war movies
Ridleygrams are small sketches by Ridley Scott used to explain to his crew what he wants in a shot
Thanks so much for this review! We knew you'd love it 😉. It's one of the best films out there, let alone, one of the best on 4k.
The best modern war movie ever made
Great review. Thank you!
There are reviews on Amazon that are really critical of the Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Those reviews are a few months old, I wonder if the issues they cite were corrected.
Buying the 77 cx tomarrw...what 4k player would u recomm?? Under 5pp preferably cuz the cx broke me 😆
FYI- it's deal time on criterion films via Barnes and Noble!
Have you learned more about the audio? PCM isn’t older really is just uncompressed. TrueHD and HD Master shouldn’t sound any different.
Regardless it's older or newer and whatever tech is it, as long as it sounds awesome. Actually I compared both LPCM5.1 vs Atmos. Atmos sounds slightly better - slightly louder, slightly more bass (although still lacking compared to some reference quality atmos).

I would like to see a review on end games and infinity avengers
Yea the Blu Ray presentation was poor. That is why I kept my DVD version as it had both movie types and all the special features. Glad the 4K has it all now. Will defiantly upgrade. Thanks.
Great review and video 😊
Have you checked out Watchmen 4k yet?
I thought the surrounds are great but the subs underutilized.
Agree.
Love this series, thx!

8k is "vaporware", and totally rediculous. I saw a version that required TWO HDMI cables!!! Like buying a Lambo to go grocery shopping.
Unless they get 100% of the color spectrum to go with it, any 8k disc tech will be like selling snake oil. Maybe people with 120 inch screens sitting 3 feet away will benefit
I cannot watch a DVD, do not feel like that about 1080 blu-ray
I have the regular Blu ray and has a LOT of grain

Awesome review
Dolby Vision+Atmos
Are there any 4k projectors that also play 3d blu Ray discs?
The Sony projectors are true 4K and also do 3D, there are others I’m sure.
Optoma does as well
Benq also
I think if you have it on dvd upgrade ( DVD’s look nasty on a 4K tv) if you have Blu-ray not much point
The blu isn’t much better than a DVD. Such an old transfer
Wizard of Oz 4K yesterday it still shows a 480 picture but it is high definition
I don’t think that’s right
I know a guy that was there.
On my Oppo 203, LGC9 65" Oled, LG SK9Y with LG SPK-8 rear speakers, there is a sound delay about 0.5 second on this 4K HDR blu ray, and that is bad enough for a war movie. Yes it's worth the upgrade yes everyone needs 4K DONT LISTEN TO THIS GUY SOMETIMES just go buy 4K you need it you want it just get it
I was disappointed this didn't come with DTS HDMA as this sounds better on my system. I am not a huge fan of Dolby due to its innate signature.
It’s got a HD master track on it
4k rarely impresses me
Atmos is good. But Video is too grainy
Some Recommendations since you said you didn't have much left to pick up on Criterion and if I recall Battle of Algiers (Pontecorvo) was one of your favorites:
Kapo (Pontecorvo)
Hands Over The City (Rosi)
The Organizer (Monicelli)
A Face in the Crowd (Kazan) - probably one of Criterion's most important releases this year (was long OOP before)
Thieves' Highway (Dassin)
& for Halloween - Day of Wrath (Dreyer)
Also consider doing a review of Anthroposcene: The Human Epoch when it gets released to video by Kino in the coming months, they deserve some support (th-cam.com/video/44RYqgKwfSQ/w-d-xo.html)
Good job with the channel - cheers.
I watched it over the weekend, it really doesn't look good, and the sound is disappointing.
I m not satisfy about 4K blu ray, to be honest but i am satisfy that standard.
I'm somali, I hate this movie with a passion, portrayed Somali people but all the actors were bantu black Africans and organized ex military militia were made to look like civilians with guns and nothing more
I'll pass. These dark 4k releases aren't worth the upgrade to me.
The audio and special features are the highlights for this release.
First! :)
