Quantum of Solace opening scene is a must show. It doesnt have any height channel action, but it has everything else you could ask for...musical crescendo, quiet moment, car crash, glass breaking, tunnel echo, car engines roaring, sound fly bys, explosions, demolitions, dirt road racing, dust, and the smoothest transition into a title sequence ever.

Two weeks ago this was my first physical 4k disc for my Lg CX and it was so damn good I actually felt the room get freezing cold LOL. I can't wait for winter to rewatch it.
I agree i have bladerunner 2042, Dankirk, Darknight trilogy, Martian, Ready Player One, 2001 Space Odessy all great looking movies many consider referance quality but Revenant is still the one that blew me away the most. I first bought it digital and liked the way it looked so much i ended up buying it on disc so i paid for it twice and well worth it.
Here are my top 5 discs that I love to spin and show off my system: 1. Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 2. Mission: Impossible - Fallout 3. The Dark Knight, sucks that Nolan refuses to mix his films in Atmos but the lossless 5.1 track on this disc is awesome. Also, love the IMAX sequences. 4. Star Trek: Into Darkness 5. Fast Five. Gotta give DTS: X some love and the DTS: X on this disc is a spectacular.
I mosty go to Mission Impossible. Skyfall/Spectre, Pacific Rim, Star Trek, and a lot of Disney Pixar movies are really good. The opening sequence of The hurt locker wil make your house shake. The drums in The Great Wall are also very cool. Gravity has a good atmos mix. The best overall is Ready Player One.
Apollo 11 launch in the documentary Apollo 11 has amazing bass. Saw it in IMAX. Nearly took my lungs out. Some people in the IMAX cinema had their fingers in their ears

For me, a big sound is way more important than a big screen (at home). So: 5. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - One of my guilty plesure movies. With two other actors it could have been fantastic. 4. Dunkirk, gets to represent all of the Nolan-movies. If the sound alone don´t get your heartrate going - you propably dead. 3. Hurricane Heist, When mother nature shows who´s the boss - you can expect great sound. 2. Pacific Rim, Big robots - big sound 1.Ready Player one - the details is just amazing. Today most films have pretty good sound. So even if the movie isn´t all that good, ones experience is often good. And, all the classics - some of them sounds very good.

Great lists. I think knowing the demo material yourself in and out on different systems is the most important. At least if you are doing it not just to impress someone but also check how it performs on the system. So I totally get Enzos choice of The Matrix.

I still use the Pod Race scene from Star Wars Ep 1 for bass and surround. The train scene from Zootopia where Judy first goes to the city is great for color. Great wall is great for Atmos during the breech when they are udner the wall. Mini gun scene in the appartments from Dredd is pretty killer And the opening from Midnight Sky is probably the best helicopter ambiance I've heard.
I've used also some scenes from Star Wars, not just because I'm fan, but also because Lucas Movies have always been a reference for me in sound effects.
James Bond Spectre has a cool helicopter scene after the one shot opening. Mission Impossible Fallout is also really good. The expendables 'big gun' scene is similar to the Dredd one.
Need to give some love to the Harry Potter movies on 4K. The 1st two are down fantastic both sound and picture. The car and the willow tree scene is great in the 2nd movie. The fight scenes in Kong Skull Island sound great to.
For video Passengers, Mortal Engines, Middway, the last Tomb Raider, and Ready Player One. Audio I think Middway is the new champ followed by Ready Player One, the last Terminator film, Monster Hunters, and Blood Shot.

I went in with high expectations and was disappointed so when I went in for a second viewing it was still the same thought. Godzilla King of Monsters was far better as the Atmos is more active.
Definitely that's kind of my list, those DC movies, Blade Runner, ready player one, plus some other classics that have a lot of grain and nice sound mix like The Shinning in 4K. I totally agree with the sad looking real world scenes in Ready Player One, and now that we're at home I kinda feel like my life's like that, HDR, 4K movies and videogames and, whenever I go out to buy something it feels sadness all around. 😟
Frustrating thing about Midway is the Canadian release doesn't have an atmos mix. How on earth can you remove atmos for a release in a specific country? We have atmos in or igloos too!!
It's generally a sad thing. Some licensing BS...we get quite a few Movies here in Germany that don't come with an english Atmos Mix, or don't come out in 4K. Or they come out in 4K and Atmos on Disc, but not on iTunes...very confusing and frustrating.
Great point regarding front projector setups and HDR. Most home theaters with 120" screen setups simply aren't bright enough to complain about "Fake HDR" 4k UHD discs.
I've watched it on Netflix before, and I've just watched the 4k disc tonight and it is 10 times better. My sound system is a Denon avr-x3700h with 5.2.4 atmos. Even when the tanks are moving, my floor shakes. Bullets and canons fly past me in 3D space. When characters are standing around talking, there's distant bombs going off around me.
Remember ordering Midway after watching your review only to find the Canadian version did not include the Atmos soundtrack. WTF?!? So pissed, why do they do this??
I had the same thing happen to me as well (Canadian as well). I didn't even watch the movie as soon as I found out it wasn't in atmos. I ended up ordering the steelbook version from the states, just to get the atmos track. It was well worth it in the end.
Godzilla vs Kong and the new Mortal Kombat movie are two of my absolute favorite movies to demo Dolby Atmos right now. And its only streaming for the moment!

I have no problem with grain as long as it’s sharp. Sure a smooth film like image looks good but so does a sharp image that is made up of fine grain. Even having a coarse grain image isn’t bothersome used properly for mood or texture in certain situations.
Black Hawk down has a great audio track. John Wick 3 is pretty good for the audio and HDR. Man of Steel has some of the most noticeable HDR there is. The Equalizer has some great daytime HDR scenes that really show off the format.
Honestly surprised they didn’t mention Super 8. The train wreck scene is beyond crazy and shakes my home theater. Just pre-ordered the Best Buy 4K STEELBOOK
The wizard of oz should be on the list to because holy hell do it look amazing in 4k. Looks like it was filmed yesterday and Godzilla (2014) is on my list cause it looks great and the atmos is crazy on that one.

THEY FIXED THE MATRIX!!?? I thought it was like the 6th or 7th matrix because the creator couldn't find a perfect balance between control of those in the matrix and allowing free will.
I know a guy who was one of the senior digital artists on Ready Player One and Spielberg had a rule that the CG scenes should not be completely photorealistic because he wanted there to be a difference between the VR world and the real world in the movie. No, the Visual Artists did not get to personally meet Spielberg. The guys who do all the stuff on the computer rarely ever meet the actors/directors.
My list is similar to shane but I'd only add The greatest showman! However I really blasted that movie with my Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE (2018) version at 70% with my system in my basement with my 75 inch Sony Z9D. However in 2023 i ordered the Nakaimichi dragon sound system on April 26th 2023. I heard from many other Nakaimichi fan boys who did the same thing, that also upgrade to the Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE Earc (2022) was a huge upgrade from the original system. Since ordering the Nakaimichi dragon 11.4.6 we had an expected delay date in August 2023. In that time the Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE Earc went on sale for $1477 (discounted $420). So i decided to upgrade my Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE in my bedroom to the Earc version. Well to say it was an huge improvement over the original Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE was an understatement..I could only play Midway at 32% of volume and subwoofer set at 4. Because my bedroom was shaking that's much during the action scene. I also played John Wick 4 and Top Gun maverick UHD Blueray at 32 volume and subwoofer at 4. It was so loud 🔊 i was concerned about my neighbors. The Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE Earc taken me places i didn't think was possible. I was already extremely impressed by the original unit but this was next level 🤔..I would play the original unit at 78 max. I haven't played the updated earc above 32, because I have no need to. That's was an increase of 1000 watts to 1300 watts. Im looking forward to getting my Nakaimichi dragon in August which is 3000 watts and revolutionary compared to the Nakaimichi shockwafe. But I'm so excited playing with the Earc upgrade that Im in no rush waiting for the Nakaimichi dragon which isn't expected until August 🤔. But what the hell will that sound like 😮

This might sound heretical...but there is a new Netflix Show (Shadow and Bone) and it has some pretty great Atmos Sound. The image is too dark a lot of the time for my taste though. If I had to make a 1-5 list... 1) Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle 2) Star Trek Into Darkness (Atmos) 3) Aquaman 4) Ready Player One (although the Atmos is underwhelming) 5) The 5th Element One side note...after Upgrading to 7.2.6 I get a much better Atmos experience on good Soundtracks, but "cheap" mixes like most Marvel/Disney stuff actually sounds worse because with those Tracks only the Top Middle Speakers are actually used...

Agree with his commentary on grain - when used appropriately definitely adds to the cinematic experience

@@Sunil-he8xm we have an e6 but we have never used it for 3D we kind of give up with that in 2015 at that time we had a Sony 55inch led I can’t remember the last 3D movie I watched but the only one that stood out on 3D Blu-ray was avatar for me

I went in with high expectations and was disappointed so when I went in for a second viewing it was still the same thought. Godzilla King of Monsters was far better as the Atmos is more active.
Definitely that's kind of my list, those DC movies, Blade Runner, ready player one, plus some other classics that have a lot of grain and nice sound mix like The Shinning in 4K.
I totally agree with the sad looking real world scenes in Ready Player One, and now that we're at home I kinda feel like my life's like that, HDR, 4K movies and videogames and, whenever I go out to buy something it feels sadness all around. 😟

Frustrating thing about Midway is the Canadian release doesn't have an atmos mix. How on earth can you remove atmos for a release in a specific country? We have atmos in or igloos too!!
It's generally a sad thing. Some licensing BS...we get quite a few Movies here in Germany that don't come with an english Atmos Mix, or don't come out in 4K. Or they come out in 4K and Atmos on Disc, but not on iTunes...very confusing and frustrating.

Great point regarding front projector setups and HDR. Most home theaters with 120" screen setups simply aren't bright enough to complain about "Fake HDR" 4k UHD discs.

I've watched it on Netflix before, and I've just watched the 4k disc tonight and it is 10 times better. My sound system is a Denon avr-x3700h with 5.2.4 atmos. Even when the tanks are moving, my floor shakes. Bullets and canons fly past me in 3D space. When characters are standing around talking, there's distant bombs going off around me.

Remember ordering Midway after watching your review only to find the Canadian version did not include the Atmos soundtrack. WTF?!? So pissed, why do they do this??
I had the same aswell. Had to get the german 4k version. Dutch Filmworks released a Dolby 5.1. It is okay but far less than the atmos version.
I had the same thing happen to me as well (Canadian as well). I didn't even watch the movie as soon as I found out it wasn't in atmos. I ended up ordering the steelbook version from the states, just to get the atmos track. It was well worth it in the end.
I imported mine from the UK for the Atmos.

I have no problem with grain as long as it’s sharp. Sure a smooth film like image looks good but so does a sharp image that is made up of fine grain. Even having a coarse grain image isn’t bothersome used properly for mood or texture in certain situations.
Black Hawk down has a great audio track. John Wick 3 is pretty good for the audio and HDR. Man of Steel has some of the most noticeable HDR there is. The Equalizer has some great daytime HDR scenes that really show off the format.
The John Wick 2 scene in Rome fighting with Cassian is pretty good as well. But JW3 definitely has the best sound of the 3

Also World War Z has some insane bass just like Edge of Tomorrow. Godzilla 2014 is in that God tier of bass

Not a list, but to demo the subs, use war of the worlds, but not the 4k disc as they messed up the subs, use the bluray version.

I know a guy who was one of the senior digital artists on Ready Player One and Spielberg had a rule that the CG scenes should not be completely photorealistic because he wanted there to be a difference between the VR world and the real world in the movie. No, the Visual Artists did not get to personally meet Spielberg. The guys who do all the stuff on the computer rarely ever meet the actors/directors.

You ever notice in RP1 how when the Batmobile skids to a stop the tire screeches the Batman theme?
My list is similar to shane but I'd only add The greatest showman! However I really blasted that movie with my Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE (2018) version at 70% with my system in my basement with my 75 inch Sony Z9D.
However in 2023 i ordered the Nakaimichi dragon sound system on April 26th 2023. I heard from many other Nakaimichi fan boys who did the same thing, that also upgrade to the Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE Earc (2022) was a huge upgrade from the original system.
Since ordering the Nakaimichi dragon 11.4.6 we had an expected delay date in August 2023. In that time the Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE Earc went on sale for $1477 (discounted $420). So i decided to upgrade my Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE in my bedroom to the Earc version.
Well to say it was an huge improvement over the original Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE was an understatement..I could only play Midway at 32% of volume and subwoofer set at 4. Because my bedroom was shaking that's much during the action scene. I also played John Wick 4 and Top Gun maverick UHD Blueray at 32 volume and subwoofer at 4. It was so loud 🔊 i was concerned about my neighbors. The Nakaimichi shockwafe SSE Earc taken me places i didn't think was possible. I was already extremely impressed by the original unit but this was next level 🤔..I would play the original unit at 78 max. I haven't played the updated earc above 32, because I have no need to. That's was an increase of 1000 watts to 1300 watts.
Im looking forward to getting my Nakaimichi dragon in August which is 3000 watts and revolutionary compared to the Nakaimichi shockwafe. But I'm so excited playing with the Earc upgrade that Im in no rush waiting for the Nakaimichi dragon which isn't expected until August 🤔. But what the hell will that sound like 😮

Anyday inception is the movie to test. It's a complex orchestra with descent low end and chest thump bass. We might not get the essence if the low frequency is not controlled in the room.
This might sound heretical...but there is a new Netflix Show (Shadow and Bone) and it has some pretty great Atmos Sound. The image is too dark a lot of the time for my taste though.
If I had to make a 1-5 list...

One side note...after Upgrading to 7.2.6 I get a much better Atmos experience on good Soundtracks, but "cheap" mixes like most Marvel/Disney stuff actually sounds worse because with those Tracks only the Top Middle Speakers are actually used...
Yes Shadow and Bone has very good Atmos!
