Hey Chris, it's been a while. This video was incredibly helpful as I'm helping my daughter with what look like methylation issues at the moment and we were stumped as to why she reacts so baldy to methylfolate, methylcobalamin and even chicken liver. Looks like you might have nailed it here. Thank you very much indeed.

I tend to believe the person who asked the question was talking about 30 micro-grams not miligrams of folinic acid. People tend to confuse units when it comes to supplements.

Glyphosate is a dietary pollutant that causes misfolding of proteins by replacing glycine in the proteins. Could glyphosate be seriously screwing up the glycine-related aspects of the methylation cycle? Seems plausible to me.

Helping; folks may have missed Chris's mention; "you need the androgens and vit A". To me meaning; get your estrogen (female) and testosterone (male and female) up via BHRT if needed, to get all these systems to function. Per my other education and personal experience; hormones being up mid range or better is foundational to health. Good luck.

10:25 I've got those 6 things but get a headache every time i try taking any methyl donor. I'm talking just 50mcg of methylfolate. It goes away with 3-6g extra glycine. What might I be overlooking?

This is me! I can’t even tolerate 400mcg of folinic. I have no testosterone & high iron. I am intolerant to methyl donors, iron, copper, iodine,
selenium methionine, high dose vitamin D, vitamin A & most collagen (except for marine collagen which is high glycine). I have issues with calcium, eggs, p5p, caffeine, histamine, salicylates, & have high oxalate. it’s very challenging to even find something to eat. Almost everything I eat makes me feel bad. It’s misery & I battle every several hours each day trying to cope with what to eat & terrible moods swings. I have tried many vitamin formulas and have wasted thousands of dollars bc I can’t tolerate any of them. Even my integrative med Dr couldn’t help. I just don’t even talk about the pain I’m in and the lack of joy in my life bc people (even family) don’t understand. The only thing that lowered my cancer markers was whole 30 diet, but I had no energy and it is just not sustainable long term.
I am compound hetero MTHFR with homozygous mutations in MTRR, COMT, MAO-A, PEMT, TCN, NOS2, & NOS3. I am gluten free, dairy light and can only tolerate 1 caffeinated beverage early in the day. I do well with low dose vit D, mag glycinate, mag threonate, zinc, low dose niacin and the occasional drop or 2 of lithium orotate. I sometimes also take seeking health b minus alone. Thank you for this video. It is nice to know that some health care practitioners are trying to help people like myself.

Sorry to hear your predicament. I’m trying to get to the bottom of my own health issues….sleep issues (tongue swelling up, choking at night.) Was wondering if taking a methyl donor caused this flare up last week. I figured out I feel so much better having only one meal a day (lunch), keto/fasting. Friends/coworkers/family don’t understand but I gotta do what’s right for me. I’m suspecting my body just doesn’t process food/nutrients well and has a hard time detoxing. Have you tried fasting so your body can cleanse itself, let it catch up? Are you already a thin person? I’ve been overweight most of my adult life and it’s dawning in me that when I was a skinny kid who barely ate anything I felt sooo much better/healthier in general. Is your body reacting to chemicals/additives in foods? Anyhow I hope you solve your food issue. Good luck.

omg guys, fix your diet please. If you cannot tolerate healthy food, please use all your money on gastroenterologist rather than random supplements, then you can start eating healthy food (fiber-rich, mostly plant based, colorful, but not necessarily going 100% plant-based - it is just that one should not abruptly add too much fiber-rich foods when the gut flora is not ready and the immune memory is not ready to handle intricate plant complexes yet).

@@jbeauty4150 I’m so sorry to hear this. I am still struggling. It seems a lot of my problems are stemming from fatty liver. I have always done well with milk thistle but currently trying tudca to help improve liver function. If you are having liver pain, ask your Dr for a liver ultrasound & follow-up fibroscan if necessary. I have to eat very clean with daily cruciferous veggies. I take d3/k2 with mag & fish oil. Hope this helps you!
Edited to add: I fast 12 hours daily & sometimes extend my fast with 1tablespoon MCT oil. I try to limit carbs and have added avocado & coconut fats.

Methylfolate side effects, a battle every day

Neurotransmitters all out of sync, feeling insane
This detox got me feeling like I'm in a drain
But I'm gonna rise up and break free from this chain
Allergic reactions got me on my toes
Just trying to find balance and strike a healthy pose
Got my homies B12, B6, and riboflavin close
Together we're gonna conquer this, we're gonna oppose

Gotta push through this haze, gotta leave it behind
Methylfolate side effects, a battle every day
Gotta keep up the fight, gotta find a way
    Bridge:
    Dehydration, it's a cruel game
Gotta stay quenched, gotta stay sane
This nutrient journey, it's not in vain
Gonna fight for wellness, gonna break every chain
    Verse 3:
Sensitivity to this nutrient, like walking on a ledge
Gotta find my footing, gotta be the edge
Ain't backing down, I'm on the verge
Of finding my flow, watch me surge
    Chorus:
Methylfolate side effects, messing with my mind

The entire methyl-supplemented methylation process is the problem cycling into toxicity. "MTHFR defect" is not a gene mutation, but the reality that some ancestors were not consuming a lot of methionine foods that result in high homocysteine byproducts. This has been understood in science for quite some time. [Pre 2003 MTHFR symptoms were understood by Homocystinuria]:
      (1) Geigy Scientific Tables, 7th edition, page 449; Inborn Metabolic Errors and their treatment, 'Homocystinuria' the treatment is 'Diet low in methionine, but higher in cysteine and pyridoxine [vitamin B6].' Which B6 is naturally found in fruits, veggies and grains.
      (2) Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms, pages 846-850; 'Cobalt coenzymes [B12] with FADH enzymes [B2 based] attacking SAM [S-adenoslymethionine] creating methyl-CoB12, which then turned homocysteine back into methionine.' Normally [without supplements] SAM would create methyl-CoB12 by the enzyme NADPH, with a "defect" and lower ability to metabolize, the Cobalt enzymes [B12] with FADH [B2 based] can also do the job. But the next pages 851-863 show that methyl-CoB12 '... appears to function secondary methylation category... methylates mercury, palladium, lead, platinum, gold, tin, arsenic, selenium, and chromium' in the environment creating toxic chemicals. High doses of methyl-CoB12 is well known to increase oxidative stress and has many other toxic reactions. So lowering methionine with focus on natural foods with cysteine, B2 and B6 [from diet] seems to be a better route and dealing with Homosistinuria ["MTHFR defect" B2, B6, B12 deficiency] for over 50+ years. Methionine is carcinogenic and involved in angiogenesis that creates blood vessels to tumors. The common ideas of methionine being "essential" is overrated because even with no MTHFR "defects" the toxic effects of methionine to homocysteine recycling can affect anyone. From my point of view it is irrelevant and good if common simple B2, B6, B12 fortified foods are a source, what is important is to lower methionine which is the starting point of the cycle.

I would recommend people have all the genetic testing done first, then start with the supplement protocol recommended by their health care provider. I did my testing through 10X Health - they gave me a full report on all the pathways, which were blocked, the severity or percentage of blocking, and whether the gene mutation was from the Mother's side, Father's side, or both. They also provided a supplement protocol based on my testing with specific doses of each methyl donor. Of course, 10X is only one place to get this done - I am sure there are many others, but if you want to get started with testing and supplementation, I can definitely recommend them.

    How about Betaine HCl?
I've low energy all the time.
Im taking it for 3 years for 5x3 capsules of 600mg, and now figured out it is TMG+HCl.
    TMG supplement makes me fatigued.
As I understand Betaine is running my methylation cycle too fast, then SAM-e can buffer CH3 to DMG.
So in the end Im not getting plenty CH3 but just buffering CH3 into TMG.
How to resolve this problem without giving up on Betaine HCl, it helps a lot my digestion?

Dr. Masterjohn, I heard here you saying we need unmethylated folate as a part of this process. I’m not MTHFR positive but instead have the MTR A2756G and MTRR A66G both A/G heterozygous, which I read is termed the B12 Double Whammy. I’ve been supplementing with 5MTHF for my low 3.9 Folate, while waiting to get my B12 status clear as my tests appear I have a functional deficiency. My SNOS suggest I will tolerate Hydroxy or Adenosyl B12.. my question is, with these parameters, do I need for any of my supplement s to be methylated? Or.. should I be using a blend of methylated and unmethylated? Can I keep up my 5MTHF or will it harm me? Thank you for all you do
