- Invited into a van with two philanthropists on their way to visit a rural village along the Thai-Myanmar border, OTR, a food channel, set out for a three-day adventure of understanding the history of Thai cuisine, a path that would take us to the edge of an active war zone and into communities of people ignored and forgotten by society, and into contact with those fighting to change that.
This is the first full-length OTR Documentary: the story of the Mon, the Karen, and the people who survive on the margins in a place called Sangkhlaburi.
-
Even with support from groups like the Rotary Club, Children of the Forest still faces an annual budget shortfall of over $100,000. To learn more about the organization or how to help, please visit www.childrenoftheforest.org

This won't be a comprehensive list of locations this week, as 1) I have no idea where some of these places deep in the jungle actually were as we had no phone service, 2) some of the places in town don't have map pins, and 3) I'd like to protect the privacy and security of the communities we visited. However here are a few pins from the town itself, as well as details of Children of the Forest.
1) Sangkhlaburi Morning Market: maps.app.goo.gl/PkjXqM8t7nmgoMvJ9 (the khanom jeen place is up the hill a couple hundred meters, and both the Mon Hang Le restaurant and the place serving Ohn No Khao Soi are along the same road, past the market around the bend. None of those have map pins).
2) Zhou (congee or jok) restaurant: maps.app.goo.gl/mpdu4ooEQvQr86fW7
3) Sangkhlaburi Night Market: maps.app.goo.gl/bt5qu6mCFAcSPmyN8
4) The place in Kanchanaburi where we stopped for lunch (first restaurant in the video): maps.app.goo.gl/mMpafWCCY1wHLe4r8
And most importantly- Children of the Forest. They really need the support, any help you can provide (financial or donations of clothes or anything else) very much appreciated. Here's their information: www.childrenoftheforest.org
Thanks for sitting through such a long video! We won't have a new one next week (no time, this one took extra production time as you might expect) or the week after (Daria and I are off to Vientiane, along with our good friends, for a much-needed break and some fantastic Lao food). Can't wait to get back to work soon.
Cheers all.
Thank you so much for this video! I visited Sangkhlaburi in April. I have videos on my channel. I loved it so much.
Such a noble act. Thank you for sharing.
I just made a comment but would like to share another one that I just made a donation to the CoF. I hope this little insignificant gift can bring a tiny bit of joy to the children. God bless always.
Great job you did here- history & featuring the refugees and the Children of the Forest.
the broom factory pin on google map is “ไม้กวาดดอกหญ้าขายส่ง(โรงงาน)” in บ้านห้วยกบ (translated to "Frog stream village"). I've been to the villages nearby for a volunteering project to help rural schools managed by the Border Patrol Police. Fascinating areas!
I was a Karen refugee. I grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand from age 3 to 13. I now live in Texas. I was one of those stateless children. Living in a refugee camp was so isolating. I didn't have the opportunity to eat all the ethnic food from Burma. That's something I want to do when the country is stable. In the meantime, I am just watching videos on TH-cam like this one. It's comforting.
So glad you found this video. Thanks for writing.
Glad you made it safely to the U.S. I am originally from Burma and came to California when I was 7.
I am now retired in Thailand. I had visited Myanmar twice before the military coup occured. The economy during the democratic government was on the up swing- especially with tourism. It is a beautiful country due to mass tourism (like in Thailand) not ruining the special attractions. I hope you're saving your money for a holiday there. Someday the junta will be gone.
Do you have anySuggestions? My wife is Shan from north Thailand west of Fang. Born in Burma, no birth certificate, parents fled to Thailand when she was 6 months old. Is it possible to get tourist visa? Lawyers tell me no. Thanks
Watching this video made me suddenly realize that no one has done this sort of content since Anthony Bourdain died...not just this video...all of your work is on par with Bourdain's. I can't think of any higher praise.
High praise indeed and humbly very much appreciated.
OTR really hits that Bourdain-shaped void in my life. This kind of long, form, deep dive into food and history is sorely missed
while watching, also thought on that same thing. bravo OTR!
I'm mon, become British and currently living in UK. I'm amazed at how well you know about the history and explored deeply during your travels.
After this video, I will be one of your fans. Thanks again
What a wonderful episode. Thank you for sharing the story of the Mon and Karen refugees in Thailand.
It’s crazy how high quality your video is, mad respect
I am belong to the Mon and grew up in Thai-Myanmar border (very close to Songklaburi but live on Myanmar side). I am lucky to attend school and received scholarship to study abroad after the ceasefire agreement (now we are back to active civil war again).I am so glad the channel covers the story about Mons who are living in Thai border and the many stateless Mons. Through out the history and many discrimination, we, Mons are very peaceful people and we are grateful to whoever provide us protection. Thank you very much for your video.
Idk if this would be helpful and sorry if it’s Annoying, but just a small point. Many people don’t know that the mon group that founded dhvaravadi haven’t yet disappeared in language and culture, but in small villages clustered in western Isaan there’s the nyah kur people, who still speaks a langauge virtually identical to dhavaravadi and is culturally very much Mon! There are only 4000-6000 speakers left but it’s incredible they still exists at all.
As a matter of fact, I had an entire segment written about the Nyah Kur. SUCH a fascinating subject. Like a lot of good stuff, it got cut for time and to keep such a long video moving as fast as possible. But yes, totally correct and a future subject for another video.
You, Daria and Jasper are doing far more for Thailand and the world than you probably realize. Kudos a hundred times over for this really, really special episode. I am inspired by so many of these amazing people you included here. ❤❤❤
Yessss
A Proud Karen refugee here. Love your content mate. Strongly recommend you to go up further to the northwest. You will surely find more interesting things about Karen people and many more, including foods and historical stuff. Will be back home on January. Can’t wait! 😇
Bless you my friend. I hope you ever got to meet Bethel Nudos ( Philipino missionary to the Karen people ) .
She married Ola Peterrsen of Sweden and lives there , has children.
The Karen people are so humble and The Best Singing voices on earth !!! ❤ I have tapes of them singing that Bethel sent me.
Tell your family I still pray for them and God bless them all. ❤
I just donated to Children of the Forest. Thx for the wonderful work Children of the Forest is doing. OTR is great too. :)
Thank you!!

i have never seen so down to earth channel like OTR . the history of food, helping the poor , wow simply the best I even seen for long time after anthony bourdain passes. ❤OTR .
The research you do is deeply appreciated. So many travel bloggers do not get into the history or background of a place.
It will be interesting to see if the anti-junta Shan, Kayah, Rakhine and Chin states ( ethic tribes in these areas) will continue to challenge and eventually overthrow the military dictatorship.
What timing, right??
The Burmese are brave, inspiring other when they gain victory. Because the world we know it robbed by mafia Xi due to traitor like Min Aungliang, Biden etc. I incite my Cambodian people to get rid of Pol Pot Sen too. My memoir Love of Life - A Miraculous Story! will be published early next year.
Thanks for your tour doc.

Myanmar people need someone like you who genuinely cares about putting Myanmar and its people in focus while the care factors from general mainstream media are scarce to none. Thank you for your amazing efforts and investment in showing the world the existance of Myanmar and its many people. I have now subscribed to your channel as a thank you and hope to enjoy many more of your amazing work . Keep up the great work.
I like khanom chin (well, sort of) and I love bún chả, so I’ve always wondered why we don’t have our own version of the noodles here in Indonesia (we got something that has a similar look but actually originated from Indian idiyappam). Well, it makes sense that we don’t, because we never got that Mon influence.
Thank you for taking us along on such an eye-opening journey. I’ve never been to Sangkhlaburi, but I’ve been to Kanchanaburi for the bridge over the River Kwai, and what I remember from the trip was that although it was nice that the conscripted workers of European origins had their proper burials and their descendants are able to visit their graves, the same things don’t apply to their Southeast Asian counterparts.
They remain unnamed, unidentified, forgotten: people who were taken away from their family and homeland by force and died a lonely death in a foreign land. Sadly, seeing the refugees, the stateless and other displaced people in this video reminds me that not a lot has changed since then. Not only in Sangkhlaburi, but elsewhere all over the world. Thank you for all the good samaritans who’re dedicating their time, money, and energy to help their fellow human beings.
Dammit, OTR! I just wanted to see some khao soi and Dalaito’s a-nyar thoke, not a reminder to check my privileges or of what a cruel world we live in! 😭
God bless Chin, Kachin, Karen, Kayah, Shan, Mon and all burmese/myanmar people. Let's pray for peace in this beautiful country
I'm Mon and I went to Sangkhla Buri(Wangka) in 2022. Although I can't speak Thai , I can speak in Mon. So, it is really nice for me, and they are generous.
This video is GOLD ! I really appreciates for those who spend part of their life for the people on earth. it is speechless ! thank you so much for keep making such a good video and of course Children of the forest foundation.
Visiting sangkhla buri right now, thank you for making a video of not just about the foods but also about the people. I was one a child of stateless n got a chance at a new life in the states.
Love the presentation of not just food, but history, culture, and people. Burma deserves peace after so many years of war.
Burma drove the Kareni people out of the Kareni State in 1940's . Thailand allowed them to live in N.W. Thailand .
The Kareni love God . Support them if you can and not not a good addict. ❤
Today departed ” prince of darkness” Kissinger. Watching this episode gives me hope . Thank you🙏❤️
My dad is Mon+Bamar+Chinese. My mom is Karen+Shan. By watching your documentary, I learned a lot about my ancestors.
I’m Mon and I love this since I grew up in the US. My journey from living in a refugee camp is undoubtedly a significant part of my life. Thank you for sharing ❤
I am burmese and I really thank you deep from my heart. Hoping you can keep doing this kind of contents. What an amazing work!
Thank you for making such a well researched documentary. Watching this was a bittersweet experience.
It was sad to see what someone's greed and hunger for power has done to these people.
On the other hand, it was uplifting to see how they have not given up and keep striving to survive and make things better for their children.
It never ceases to amaze me how people who have little are often so generous and hospitable. Maybe being in a situation where materialism isn't really possible shifts their focus to valuing people instead of material things and power.
Wow guys, this is your best video so far. Fantastic research and storytelling. You definitely did the region justice, the food looked great and the school was heart-warming.
Cheers Simon
Hi Adam, I just love how you did your homework about each subject you're presenting. I've learned a lot about my old country. Thank you for your efforts. Shout out to Daria for always being so supportive of you. Great team.
Research on all videos GREAT
I’m mon national thank you so much and I’m really appreciative you for sharing about our MON and Karen people ❤️
God bless you ❤️
At first we thought it was a bit liberal of you to look in the pots at that restaurant without permission. When you later found out that it was actually some private citizens house and NOT a restaurant, made us laugh out loud. Well done Adam, exploration like this should never stop, thanks for taking us on the journey :)
Hi Adam, Daria and Jaspar...man..this is the first time ever.. the food vlogger video make me cry...I am not prepared for this... thank you so much for promoting these people and their stories. Wonderful video ..bravo...
Exceptional video, OTR. Content just keeps getting better and better! Much love from Shanghai
well comprehensive documentary! Not just about food, but now you look deep into the past history of people and culture. With a focus of marginalized people, it's true that refugee, stateless, and migrants are part of Thai country, but they lack of status and rights. As long as the violence in Myanmar persists, they will keep coming to Thailand. That's the reason Thailand will find it's difficult to cope with this situation, but I still believe there will be a way to absorb these people, maybe by next genreation, to become Thais.
The costume are so similar to the Malay costume in the 1950 and 1960 unfortunately the Malay have get rid of their own costume to be replaced by the Arabic costume ...Thank you for your video and I have enjoyed watching it how you have explained their history, food and the beautiful scenery in this place that I guess not many people know about this area...
Honestly I think this is your best video yet
Thanks! I do too.
Magnificent, this is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Thank you
I was in a refugee, Karen ethnic, now live in America. Thanks for doing video like this.
You guys and your content is gold! ❤
I have recommended your videos to friends at work, and you have already a cult-like following in our company 😅
Hi Adam, what an amazing episode exploring part of thailand myanmar border. I met a Myanmar lady two weeks ago in Siem Reap and got interested in learning Myanmar civil war as I was born and brought up during Srilankan civil war. Just today I came to know that lady I met is from Mon state and your eposide really touched me about the plight of these stateless people. Now I live in USA and will be donating to children of the forest charity because of this eposide. Your research is really amazing, keep up the great work and I love to become a Patreon supporter.
Thank you so much. Very kind comment and really appreciate your support! Means a lot.
I have donated $500 to the charity. This is a registered charity in the USA. Also become a patreon of your channel. I was a big fan of Anyhony Bourdain and your way of delivering reminds me of him. Keep up the great work. Your quality of research is top notch.
incredibly generous and means a ton. Thanks, that makes my day@@vsengo
I am Karen. I really thanks you for sharing about our nationality and describing about Myanmar and Mon people. I got many information from your documentary. Thanks a lot ❤
In college a friend of mine worked with stateless refugees who made it to the US. This is an awesome watch.
as a thai person who was born in Thailand and grew up in the US, I have never thoughts that this is still exciting. My grandma from my dad side was MON who pass away when I was little, I have learn so much from this video...I want to be there one day.
What a beautiful video. Thank you for showing this part of Thailand and love to all the people and children on that part of the world
Thank you for this video, it is very emotional to watch but also very beautifully and thoughtfully presented, as usual. What strikes me is that despite the circumstances these displaced people find themselves in, their sense of community and culture seems to hold them together against the odds and with Children of the Forrest, who are a godsend, they are doing an incredible job of educating them and bringing them out of statelessness. You mention Anthony Bourdain, in my opinion you folks have picked up his torch, as I see it, to bring the world together with food as it truly does connect all people. Your love of food and history is on another level, right up there with Bourdain, maybe even surpassing him, no one I have seen on TH-cam compares in your attention to detail and love of what you do. Production values surpass the majority of channels including extremely well funded ones, the difference is your passion, no one can fake that or produce their way around it. I have been subscribed to your channel since I saw you with Gary Butler, one of my go to guys and I love that you gave a shoutout to Bangkok Pat, another of my favorite channels. I am headed for SE Asia in Mid January for 5 weeks with my good buddy to eat our way through Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and thanks to your channel and Gary's, I have pinned many places to eat! Cheers my friends, and thank you!!!
thank you for such a kind comment!
This episode is GOLD 🥇🥇🥇🥇
Bravo. Best yet. Thanks for sharing this experience with the world! I just made a donation to The Children of the Forest for their great work.
That's great. I've passed along the note to them.
I joined your Patreon because of this video. You are doing good things.
Ivan, thanks so much. Makes my day. Message me through Patreon or Discord anytime.
Will do. Your channel is excellent. The videography, the construction of the stories, and your enthusiasm for it all. Bravo. I admire it. @@OTRontheroad
OTR, this was a very precious episode about a stunning journey, food history and culture ! i was very impressed about this long super interesting documentary, thankyou for bringing the Myanmar story in focus, the people are suffering from a cruel regime. The helpers giving humanitairy support are remarcable personalities ! Thanks a lot for your outstanding work ! 🙏🌸
😢😢😢😢for all the stateless men, women and children of the region and all over the world. My heart ached and tears fall. One day I would like to help and be a part of such organization there. My goal is one day hopefullynsooner than later have enough funds to be able to partner with you guys and help children throughout the world. Thank you all so much for your love and support for these innocent children. God bless and be with you all each and everyday while you do your work to better the lives of these stateless families.
Karenni people have a unique identity with their own languages, traditions, and history. Like many other ethnic groups in Myanmar, Karenni people had faced challenges, such as attacks and displacement from their homeland in Kayah state. Kayah state is one of the least developed areas in the country of Myanmar. Many Karenni people seeking safety have found refuge in places like Thailand, where there's a Karenni refugee camp in Mae Hong Son. Despite the limited resources, Karenni people find ways to make each day fun and interesting, engaging in activities like soccer, volleyball, chilo, and Karenni Jump Rope. The culture is something special and deserves recognition. It would be wonderful if there were people like documentary filmmakers who could help shed light on the Karenni people and their rich heritage.
This is not average travel video but this is awesome documentary. Thank you for taking the time to research and made this wonderful documentary.🙏👍👍👍
Ahh so glad you made your way out to the jungles. Had the privilege to live in around Karen people for a long time here and visit Lisu/Lahu/Akha villages as well and the people are just amazing.
I went to Sangkhlaburi back in April. What an incredible place. We saw no other westerners. I have vids on my channel about it. Love your videos Adam!
Wow! much better that an Netflix documetary
Hello OTR. We did songklaburi about 2 years ago and it was awesome. We did the morning run with the monks coming down from the hill. The scenery and the food was incredible
Bro! I broke my tears when you said the name of my favorite dish "Kha nom jeen" at the end and I realized this is more than a food video, this is a story where we can connect people and culture
Keep up the excellent work and thank you so much.
the random connections here are FANTASTIC. I have the first Kingfish album on vinyl and mp3, great stuff. I remember seeing that episode with Matthew Kelly when it first "aired" and now Kingfish an the SF Bay post hippie scene is connected to dirt roads on the edge of the eternal war zone that is Myanmar and the people fleeing it to find refuge in Thailand (which ignores and mistreats them as is their habit with refugees). Really wonderful long vid and I hope this spawns more interest and tourism to the area as well as money for the CotRF.
beautiful people, i wish all the best for school kids..
greetings from india.

You are such a Great guy as well as a Gentleman. You have shown RESPECT to others, and I have a massive RESPECT for you and your kind heart. SaWaDee Khup 🙏
You should give congee more of a chance. I hated it as a child because that's what my parents made when I was sick but as an adult, it's taken a much larger place in my love of food. In Viet, it's called chao and man are there lots of types of chao. Not only in the base way of making it but also in the various acompanying proteins and ways of prep. Give it a chance, I'd imagine that Thai juk is probably as varied. Keep up the good work y'all...loving the stories told.
Mate, what a great documentary people are food and food are people .we are what we eat .
Ultimate respect to that young man from Manchester he’s done his country proud.
This was beautiful, Adam. I actually had tears for a part of it, and I'm only halfway in (and I'm not a softie having been around the block). So many people have no real idea what the rest of the world is like. The food part was also intriguing, but you share a lot more. Thanks for this, keep up the balance and the background.
The Kareni people have the most beautiful singing voices on earth. Ask them if they know Bethel and Ola Peterrsen . It will take you a rough trip to see the Kareni. All they really want is a Bible and hymn book..
Forget food for your body : seek spiritual food for your soul.
Thank God , I was able to be a part of the missionary work there for 12 yrs.
Safe journeys; prepare yourself to meet the most humble people on the planet.❤
I live in a U.S. state with a gigantic population of Karen & Hmong people (and also some Chin, Kachin, Karenni, Lisu, Mon, Rohingya, etc.), many of whom are refugees. That Anthony Bourdain quote definitely rings true re: food - some of my best food experiences were unexpected experiences with food that Karen & Hmong people have shared with me, simply from being open to making new friends. I truly hope that along with the people's thriving, the food traditions (including the agriculture, foraging, & land stewardship) in all of the many indigenous groups in Southeast Asia are preserved in an authentic, grassroots way.

I wanna go! The forest and earth will reward you all for educating us on this.
I am surprised you mentioned that tourists did not visit Sanghklaburi until 2013. I was there in 1993 when it was a small village. There were 2:guest houses back then and a trickle of tourists, even more on my second visit 10 years later. It is unrecognisable these days
I have been following this channel waiting and hoping you would make your way to Sangkhlaburi! My grandfather was a doctor and medical missionary there in the 1950s and 60s and helped to found the Kwai River Christian Hospital, which did and still does service a lot of the Karen people. My mom, and my aunts and uncles were born there. My mom was named Karen after the tribe. I had the chance to visit in 2018, and it is such a special place! Happy to see you giving it a spotlight. Jok for breakfast, fried snapper for lunch, table bbq/hot pot at Cher Grill for dinner, and plenty of Singha!
What a great story! Hope you have a chance to be interviewed bt Thairish Time.
I started to tear up listening to this 1:12:31. Well put… thanks so much 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hi Adam, Daria and Jaspar, such an uplifting documentary, Gosh you covered so many different issues far beyond the range of your previous work and so well tied together . I found it such an inspirional and professional piece of work. I especiallly loved seeing the children looking so fulfilled just to be given the opportunity to gain an education, thanks so much.
thanks for the kind comment.
I never thought that there are people in this planet who are stateless. Wonderful video has made me know all this.
I truly appreciative to Adam and Team for this video. I am a Burmese living comfort zone in Singapore, My heart goes out to those children with our Burmese Mon Karen people. I would like to make some donations to Daniel’s school and may I know how to make. Once again thank you so much for your kind effort.
Great one. We were there about 15 years ago, almost turned around as we arrived quite late and it looked like there was NOTHING there. We stayed by the inlet on the east side of the bridge on the main town side. When we woke up the mist was still hanging over the water and it was amazing. It is one our favourite memories from Thailand, and we have been a lot of places over the years. Well done.
Yeah Daria got up at 5 AM to go running and said that with the mist when the sun came up it was absolutely surreal.
What an amazing and fascinating video. So much research, superb presentation/commentary and a really well put together video. Thank you.
Step aside David Attenborough......make way for OTR! Y’all are legends.
Oh wow! Me and my family will be visiting Sangkhlaburi in 2 weeks time from Australia! Thanks for the upload!
Your video is very eyes opening and very informative about how the Mon and others ethnic group settled where they are now, I was refugee in Thailand for almost 3 years before my family and I were given the opportunity to settle in the United States, I was also stateless, thank you for such wonderful story.
My favorite OTR episode so far.
This video reminds me of an excellent Thai movie I watched some years back - the English title was "Dear Teacher". I THINK it was set somewhere in the North, on a big lake - some of the movie takes place in Chiang Mai. The main character was a young man who was still in college but who had to take a job as an elementary school teacher (I got the impression it was a temporary appoinment). He ends on up on a floating school - it was on a raft with a building on it, which housed himself and a half dozen elementary school children from the surrounding area. The teacher who was there previous to him was a young woman - I forget the reason, but she had to return to the city, and he was her replacement. He finds her diary, which he begins adding to. Eventually he, too, leaves and she comes back - and finds the diary. The movie was about all the challenges of running a small rural school on a lake.
Ah... There are quite a few trailers on TH-cam (apparently another title is "Teacher's Diary"). Someone even posted the whole movie (dubbed in Tagalog, though.. 😁).
The Thai name is "คิดถึงวิทยา".
And... that movie is actually based on a true story.
Just a small fact. The Bamar people of the Southern regions like Bago, Yangon and Ayeyarwaddy are a mix of Bamar, Mon and Pyu people.
Bless all people for taking care of unfortunate refugees and stateless children and making this video. May you all have great health, happiness, and long life. It was a very informative and sad video. ❤😢

Man, you guys are doing wonderful work, What a blend of cultural and political education, philanthropy, loving interactions and, finally, delicious food! I visited Three Pagod Pass in the late 1980s with Thai activist friends and had a wonderful trip. No smart phones then. Unforgettable. And your video documentary - right up to the health workers and charity - I can vouch for as very reminicent of my experience and is authentic. Very creative work.
