- This is part of a larger tutorial on how to onboard after having someone sign up for an online course in the FREE version of MailChimp.
The automation of an email series is a feature reserved for the paid version of MailChimp, BUT there is a workaround if you use tags to generate single email automations on a schedule. You can also use this to send a freebie after someone receives a tag.

Hello, thanks for the valuable video!
Can you please show us (or answer me) how to create a data-based email automation? For examble: I want to send several emails before a specific date and aftar that date too.
I know that I have to add to the audience "date field". But how exactly do I determine the date before which I want to send the emails? In the "Audience fields and |MERGE| tags" section there is a field called "Default merge tag value", do I have to fill in the date there?
Thank you in advance!
This is a great video! Is there anyway to set up this automated email without having to add a new subscriber manually? So THEY would sign up to be a subscriber and then then the email would get sent to them automatically after they sign up?x
Hi! Thanks. Yes - this is meant to show you how to add a second step or touchpoint without the paid version of MailChimp. But in the free plan you can still set up a a "single welcome email" where they get something when they first sign up to your list. Automations -> Single Welcome Email will get you there.
Have things changed or am I missing something? I don't see an option to create a second automated email - only regular, plain text, or template.
Hi Antonia, I'm confused by the "only regular, plain text or template" piece. Those are all emails - so if you selected one (template likely the best choice), you would be prompted to set up your second email. If you have that option, you likely have a paid plan. In the free plan, you cannot have more than one email in an automation or "Customer Journey" so this video is just showing how you can set up a Single Welcome email and then manually trigger follow up emails by utilizing tags.
