Not only was this the greatest Derby ever, but Tom Durkin also delivered the greatest call. Absolutely spotless and poetic.
"Songandaprayer's pace is blistering down the back stretch"
"Pent up power of Point Given."
"Jorge Chaves gets busy on Monarchos"
"Invisible Ink is there, Point Given not today"
"He's pulling away by 2, he's pulling away by 3"
    Kids, take notes.

Sec's actual time is still a mystery. The first time was not 1:53 flat. It was more. But a couple of reportest timed it and said no, he ran it faster. The Sec Fan Club bugged the Maryland Racing Commission for 20 years before the time was changed to the current time.

  • @NalaRichenbach

Monarchos was almost as fast. Songandaprayer had to set a blazing pace to set up a great stretch run for the winner....and we know that Secretariat could have run faster but he was two lengths ahead so why push for more. if Monarchos wasn't injured in the Preakness, he probably could have beaten Point Given in that race. However, the Belmont Stakes would have taken a tremendous effort to beat Point Given. Monarchos will forever be remembered for running the second fastest derby and a heck of a horse.
