STBs has been available for years from the Post office for free for indigent households. While the government has missed deadlines in the past, they have been consistently broadcasting the fact that the analog signal would be switched off.
For people who still watch SABC, check if your TV has a DTV decoder built into it. If it does you will not need to purchase a decoder. The decoders are only meant for TV that only have analogue receivers. However, I do not think the SABC will be ready to do the switch off by the end of the year.
Wait a minute, how is South Africa still using analogue TV in 2024 when other countries transitioned years ago? In Uganda, we switched analogue in 2015.
Since we going digital, the South African government needs to utlize strreaming boxes as a means and jump to the digital age, than waiting so long to cut the analogue signal
it's very important that we don't spread misinformation regarding this change. One minute in and what you're saying is already false, it is not true that you will not have a signal if you don't have a set top box. Most new televisions will not need a set top box as they already come with digital tuners, this includes even tvs that are over 10 years old. This is not new technology and discussions over the change have been on going for over 10 years now and the DOC has been communicating this for years. I'm really surprised that you are only find out about this now but that doesn't mean there has been a lack of communication around this. Many TV owners will not need to get a set top box.
This is true, and apologies for failing to mention it! A lot of TVs do come with a digital tuner, but a lot of indigent households don't have these more expensive TVs. With regard to the communication, that may be true, all I'm saying is that I've personally not seen much communication about this, and if I haven't, that might be the case for others as well. Thanks for watching the video!

Thank you for important information.
It's weird how South Africa was one of the first countries to use the dvb-t protocol, albeit as a satellite broadcast system (DStv)
Good job Asher and enjoy your perspectives too.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭, memories!
While most households applied for the STBs at the Whittlesea post office, they have only been installing one or two per year out of thousands.
That’s terrible!
Did i watch the video at 0.25 speed to increase retention. perhaps.Great video.
Thanks Greg!
