@@FrugalTravellers I noticed as soon as I arrived supermarkets where more expensive but you can counteract this by shopping in the markets. In the UK markets are a dying breed. I always find these videos fascinating- even though we don’t have Lidl in Australia 🙂. I love seeing the different products and how they compare generally to Australian prices. A key question for me in any comparison, however, is the purchasing power of Portuguese people versus Welsh people. For me that’s an important part of understanding which supermarket is cheaper. Really looking forward to your next chapters, Mandy and Lee - I can’t tell you how much I’ve loved following your Portugal journey 😊

@@FrugalTravellers It's ridiculous to compare LIDL Portugal and LIDL UK. What about to compare the cost of living between Lisbon and London ?! It will make more sense rather than compare the supermarkets. Ferry/airplane are expensive and most food travel from France to UK.

I’ve never visited Portugal but had a holiday home in Spain for many years and I always had the impression that Lidl in the UK (where I live) was similar, perhaps a bit cheaper here than in Spain. Excluding wine or other alcoholic items I think UK would be considerably cheaper for most things.
We recently got Lidl in the US (at least on the East Coast. Not sure about other regions). I haven’t been yet but will check it out! This was a really fun video, and a surprise result. I found your channel while I was travelling in Portugal this autumn. I was totally doing such comparison when I was there! Now I am returned to the UK, and I am doing it again! LOL Btw, I saw a couple products in Lidl Portugal that I wish they were available in Lidl UK: J.D. Gross chocolate bar in pistachio flavour (Lidl UK offers several flavours but not this one), and La Molisana pasta (it is a really good pasta brand that's hard to find in the UK supermarkets, so I was surprised to see it in Lidl Portugal)!

@@FrugalTravellers Hello Mandy, I look forward to watching your upcoming videos and learning about your new adventures with Lee! I remember a jar of pasta sauce could easily be at least €3, and I just couldn't understand why it was cheaper in the UK.
I believe that because almost all products are imported and because transportation is much cheaper from Germany or Austria prices are small in UK and higher in Portugal.
That sounds like a valid explanation as to why the prices were lower in the UK. I was surprised about things like the laundry capsules being almost twice the price in Portugal! ~ Mandy
I am a big fan of Lidl in Lagos but always find that you need to go to a 2nd supermarket as you can't get everything there. It looks exactly like our local one back in the UK. Same makes etc

Most super market prices in Southern Europe are a lot higher than the UK. In Greece for example prices are through the roof mainly because chain supermarkets form a cartel and competition is only "virtual". Also their profit margins are huge and they treat their suppliers as slaves. Add to that the low purchasing power of customers compared to the UK and you have an asphyxiating situation.
Can’t beat a Lidl when supermarket shopping in the UK, their bakery section is as good as any. I have found cheaper ways to eat though. I use the Olio app a lot and here in Lincoln we have a thing called “ Community Grocer “which is basically a hub where supermarkets send their out of date food. I can fill 2 carrier bags with veggies/fruits/dented tins for £4. I’m currently eating like a pig for £10 a week.
Wow, thank you for sharing this great information, Dave! 😊🙏 The Community Grocer idea in Lincoln sounds brilliant... an excellent way to reduce food waste and landfill, and for people to eat well for so much less!
