As a 43yr old father of 4 who has spent the last 8yrs building his ride, I would just like to say that your honesty in regards to unnecessary upgrades is refreshing. It's our jobs as older stangers to nurture and guide the younger ones; and help them appreciate their accomplishments in the hobby and make sure they are not taken advantage of so as to keep the love going. Keep on brother, and I will keep watching.

Brew2L...What's up from Cincinnati! Transplanted here from OZ, that's right good ol Ozark! I was the one who said he loved the "hometown channel" during the livestream.BTW, Very well said!! I am one of the OCD guys also...That being said, I have busted my @$$ to get to where I am in life and now! As i have said before, dad passed in July from cancer. I received his '88 T-Top 5-speed as an inheritance. I have since changed to powerstop street beast brakes, clutch kit, lightened fly wheel (SVE), and rebuilt the suspension. I agree not everyone cannor should do all this. All my work is done for the longevity! I believe in buy once, cry once...buy the best you can afford...THAT YOU CAN AFFORD! I feel this falls inline with you same philosophy! Thanks again for all the teachings and info about these wonderful cars! Having an 11 year-old son and 9 year-old to pass this down to is why I do any of it! Stay true to yourselves! Foxforce 5.OH!

I've had my '89 LX 5 speed since 1993. I am the second owner! All I have done to mine is add a Hurst shifter, Dr. Gas X pipe, 2 chamber Flowmasters, 3.73 gears with extra clutch packs in the rear, and removed the air silencer. Such a blast to drive, she brings a smile to my face every time. Thanks to you and Caleb over at Foxcast, I finally got her running again by installing all new fuel tank and accessories. Thanks for your inspirational videos, I probably wouldn't have done it otherwise. BTW, she started on the 2nd crank after sitting for 6 YEARS!

This video is very relieving i recently bought a fox from my my moms boss. He was the original owner of the 88 Gt with a tremec tko and it already has a exhaust short throw etc and when I going through the car I wanted opinions on it and all I saw was 5 lug 5 lug, now not going to lie if I never came across the wheels I have on the car now I would’ve probably fell into that (brand new tires and wheels I got for $400) . But all and all I just re did all the brakes and it has no issues what so ever stopping!!

Amen brother! My fox makes 330hp/425tq at the wheels with an old school BBK instacharger, GT40X heads and Cobra intake. Stock cam, 30lb inj. And 255lph pump. Runs 12.0 at 114mph. 55K miles, stock original clutch, T5, rear, and factory brake pads and shoes! I've had this setup for 15 years. I don't beat the piss out of it, but I have fun and haven't broken anything, ever. Stock suspension as well except for Bilstein shocks and struts. These cars can take a lot with stock parts as long as you treat em right.

  • @firebirdjone
    @firebirdjone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nothing wrong with the foxbody platform as is. I've never had any need for suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, wheel upgrades. I just prefer the cars as they came. They stop fine, handle fine, drive fine. My son has daily driven a fox for years with some drag racing mixed in with nothing but a few tweaks for more HP. He wants to keep a totally stock outward appearance and I'm on board with that. 347 is in the near future.
Besides, I think it's all about how you put things in perspective. I daily drove a 56 nomad for years. Manual 4 wheel drum brakes, no power steering, a tank that handles like a school bus with a hot 327- 4 speed. I'm still alive. I jump in a little fox body and feel like I'm in a go kart :)

These are best 7/8 complete cars ever built (the last 1/8 is up to you). Buy the best car car that you can and then spend what you need to get you car running right or repair any damage. These cars are 28 to 42 years old. They are going to need some basic repairs and replacement of component before modifying them.

Some awesome words brother, when i first bought my 90 LX hatch second owner Florida car,i was amongst other guys with plenty of cash to blow and they said the same thing on exactly what you were talking about. At almost the same time i got divorced and had no money to do really anything so when the storm was over, i started slowly on some light mods, CAI first, then BBK headers, H-Pipe, and Flow master exhaust. But not overnight this all happened, 1 income, child support, living on my own etc., etc.. But after 12 years of owning my Fox, I have upgraded many things and have done all the work myself. I did it my way and when finances were there I upgraded, This car still puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel as it did from day one. Your video and message you spoke rides rite up my alley that I can relate too, and just want to say thank you .You rock man.

This makes alot of sense. If you aren't auto crossing or setting it up for a track with twisties or just for the backroad twisties suspension and brakes is a good idea if you are just cruising it around and drag racing or roll racing with it it isn't a top priority. I would def at the very least do good pads and stuff to make the stock brakes work as good as they can but in the ladder situation no need for a 4k dollar brake setup. Best thing to do is just do your homework and do your research on what helps the cars and what does what then from that info you can make your own decisions on mods based on what you're going to be doing with the car. Dont just build it based on what guys online told ya to do lol. Good info!

Great video.. Been building cars since I was 14 and now I am 39 ... I always want my suspension and brakes done first , Only reason is because I can out drive someone with more power if I can stop better and handle better. So for me the power is secondary to the handling and stopping ability ! Plus if I am getting crazy with my driving on back roads I love the idea of being able to stop the car just that much faster if need be! I switched over to a full SN95 setup and it really helped my fox and my ability to drive the car in situations I normally would not !

I just want to be able to smoke the tires and chirp 2nd gear. Tinted windows and flowmasters were the must do mods then. I ran drum brakes on my 64 C10 for 15 years drag racing. I finally got tired of pumping the brakes to stop and upgraded to front disc.

Ok, here's the two cents from the old timer.
    1. The problem with Fox brakes are the fronts. They are 11 inch rotors on the later ones. The rear brakes actually are not responsible but for about 25% of the stopping of the car. One thing you missed in this video are the 4 lug rear options. I bought a rear Cobra kit (those are 4 lug on regular Cobra, 5 lug on R) which is real similar to the Turbo Coupe rears. I paid $100 for the whole kit lol and stored it for 10 years or so. Changed them just because I didn't like the look of drums in the back. If you can lock the brakes up on the car then a bigger rotor/better pads/etc. will not help you stop better in one panic stop. Where bigger brakes shine are if you are doing "spirited" driving or lapping a track-- the Fox stock brakes will fail on you after repeated stops.
    2. You can just put some good Hawk pads on the front, if you want good brakes on your fox for cheap (regular GT's had wimpy 11" rotors still!) then go 95 or 95 cobra setup and upgrade to those. You can track on the 95 Cobra R brakes up to about 400 hp.
    3. You are right, the rear axles at elevated power levels are going to be an issue. My rearend has one of those "repair bearings" from all my antics as a young testosterone filled maniac. Going to get a good housing and stuff it with 4 lug Moser 31 spline and motor on. I like my SR Replica wheels, I want the Weld RTS's but that is another $$$$$$$$$$$$$ story for later.

Thanks for the video, just ran across it. I still have my '89 5.0 that I ordered new when I started my first job. Frankly, it is a disaster, having had to sit outside and getting salt water on it, the front clip paint is beyond help. 4 lug, might even be original clutch, few new parts when needed (clutch kit on bench), sub frame connectors. Still puts down almost 225/300. Fun at autocross, fun at track. Can't justify the temptation of upgrading until something breaks. Sub'd.

I think this is great advice, i see so many foxes that are so madded that i wonder if they even really liked the car to begin with? Plus if you want rear discs just grab the rear end out a super coupe and you can keep your pony wheels👌

You make some great points here; especially the one about new people coming into the Fox Body world. I know I have felt like giving up on my Fox Body dreams at times because all the good stuff gets so expensive. I had to make payments on my 82 GT for almost 2 years while the car sat in someone's back yard in the SoCal high Desert before I even picked it up. I've done some work on her since but she isn't even running yet.

Haha…. I feel like you were talking to me coach. 😂 I scratched together $2000 (without a pending divorce 😂) to buy a basket case FoxBody. I’ve been consuming SO many videos as I try to get my game plan. I appreciate honest advice. I have a 1995 Seadoo GTX I’ve been restoring I need to get sold so I can invest in the car. So if anyone is looking for a great Seadoo…..😂🙌 Love your videos man.

The kiss method usually makes them the most enjoyable. Upgrade when you need to. Most people don’t explore what they already have to full extent. I’ve often asked myself at what point is it still a fox when people mod everything on them.

Well said brother. These cars are no longer budget friendly. Have been building mine since 2009. I am running an old school Gt40p heads 306 set up for a decade. You know how many times I hear why don’t you Coyote swap? Because the cost at this point is way out of my league. I built a well rounded car and took time because of the cost to do so. Your doing it right for the whole new generation of fans.

You are absolutely right, if ur auto crossing it yes! You need breaks and suspension more than you need power in my opinion, and if ur not out there street racing you can build power without doing breaks, even though you should. And yes ur right 4 lug is good enough. Anyway my opinions and a really good video Brother keep'em comin.

Get me a stock fox and the first mods imma do is 4.10's and a shifter!. Before the 355 in the green car it was exhaust, shifter, 4.10's, and a holcomb sheetmetal upper intake

Cool video brother I think the same thing if you just want a little bit more power just focus on that and don't worry about all the other stuff that people put on their car because they got the money some of us are broke and to us it's a dream just to drive around and what we got!

NAILED IT!!!!! Absolutely 💯 nailed it in this video. To many times people are quick to say you need this or that. Negative do what you can with your budget. I totally agree with you great video man!!! Side note those people are also the ones, well 99% of them with 40k in credit card debit. Enjoy your top Ramen is what I say. Again well said!!

Great video dude. $1500 left to spend would be nice rubber, decent brake pads, struts and shocks, ball joints, plugs and wires, 3:73 gears and a pair of super 40's. Also a few degrees of timing.

I would add that they should really think about long term goals and not short term wants. Don't upgrade with a cheap upgrade, and then later on down the road redo the upgrade again. Save money, be patient, and do it once-- and do it right.
