Salt Hauling in New York City

  • Every year in late fall there is a truck show on a pier in Staten Island New York that last through winter. It's not actually a truck show but it certainly could be. Salt is brought in by ship and is then trucked throughout the five boroughs of New York City and many of the trucks that haul the salt are absolutely amazing. Dominic Garrambone was kind enough to let me spend the day with him as was Joe Esposito who drives a beautiful 379 for Frank Biassi of F M B Materials. I will have more info in an upcoming issue of LargeCarMag. Enjoy!

You guys need to do more videos like this. This is how it 'really' feels in a truck. I'm tired of the videos from the outside of the trucks without taking time to find out what it's like when your up at the crack of ass climbing the countries biggest suspension bridge and truckin around in one of the toughest States in the country. Driving in downtown NY, the burroughs, ain't nothin' like L.A or Chicago ~ they all have their differences, East Coast to West Coast. If you guys are going to take this direction, it would be nice to see you move across the country from the East Coast to the West Coast, videotaping the whole way. Your camera man was spot on in this video. Kudos ~

Great doc of the LargeCar of NYC. Everyday is a truck show on the highway when you see them drive by. Everything is shining and they are lit like a christmas tree. Awesome vids of the salt haulers of winter.
That photo op really sits very well with the early morning, over cast clouds and Verrazano Br in the Background.

Salt hauling in the Cincinnati area is big money for the salt companies not for the dump truck owner operators. Advantage is taken of the owner operators because of the off season dump truck work. Extremely low rates, long hours and long lines setting at the salt pile waiting to get loaded. I rat hole some money when things are good and let the salt for someone else.

A rookie is not getting any where near this kind of equipment, so stop dreaming. Again, as a green horn rookie, you aren't a high paid driver, maybe 14 an hour.
Here's the reality kid, you are going to go to trucking school, it's going to cost around 8,000 bucks. A trucking company will offer you a job and to pay for your schooling. You'll go with the company, you will sign a slavery contract for 12-24 months, saying if you quit, your credit score will be impacted and you will be sued. You will drive like a slave for 25 cents a mile, every 1000 miles will pay you 250 dollars, as a rookie you may get 2000-2500 miles a week. You're looking at 500-650 a week before taxes. It costs around 200 dollars a week for a driver to eat and survive out on the road. After taxes, you may take home between 350-500 weekly.
Now don't think you are going to skip trucking school, no one hires without experience of school anymore. I started at 18, I am 4th generation of trucker in my family. I didn't go to truck driver school, I was taught by family, and I took a road test and got my CDL A. Bought my first truck from my uncle, a 10 yr old cabover. I own three trucks, never been a company slave, 22 yrs with my A license, 3 yrs previously with my B license.
Sorry to bum you out but this is reality of trucking. One of two things will happen for you, either the company will treat you like shit and you'll bail on trucking, many people do, this is not a job for everyone, it takes something special to be a reall good trucker. The other option is that you drive a year or two for a company, do the absolute best you can, learn how to back up very well, learn how to do everything safely and professionally, don't do stupid stuff and destroy equipment. Work to be a good driver with no accidents and then you can get a job like these guys in the video, driving that kind of equipment. It's on you bro, good luck and be safe

Let's save money by using salt by the truckload to need 25 times the cost to repair every square foot of roadway the salt eats up over time. Typical politician logic. Here's a thought use sugar to melt the ice. But that slight increase in cost is just not worth the cost for the city. Ok point proven. How much is the average bridge rebuild cost? How much for a few miles of road repair? In my home state that the roads are NEVER going to be fixed. They gave out an estimate for repairing one side of a northbound 4 lane road where the speed limit is 45 mph. Just 4 FOUR MILES to repair cost almost a quarter BILLION dollars. For 4 miles. How much would it cost the city of any state to switch to sugar or something like that to melt the ice instead of using "congress" logic and say "nope were using salt its cheaper." Ok when your bridges literally fall into the river from the salt that your saving so much money on let me know how well that genius logic worked out. Winter is seasonal which I bet the politicians arent aware of. Bridges are year round. Go look at picture of what salt is really doing to EVERYTHING IT TOUCHES. Makes sense why were never going to learn. Business as usual
