My dad drove 40 years in New York City. Let me tell you this one thing I have learned from him is that he always takes his time doesn't rush or anything even when its wide open. The amount of crazy things you'll come across trucking anywhere especially in NYC are literally unheard of.

Tyler Rogers Yeah! On my older phones, I used to have that issue downtown (tightly packed streets will cause the GPS to think you’re on the next street). Guessing that issue still happens with truck routing. But yeah, it’s best to pre plan your trip in the city , and to eventually learn the good ways.

2021 update: traffic is SOOOOOOOOOO bad now! It’s WAY worse than before the pandemic.
Respect to the truckers and thank you for what you do to tranport goods that we all just pick up at locarl retailers. I once towed the longest trailer they have at uhaul from one state to another and it was a nightmare. I felt that I literally had someone riding on my shoulder all the way. I felt that I was going to hit something with the trailer in every turn. Truckers are hard working people, I've felt tired like this dude after a stressful and hard working day.
Many cities in the Northeast have an outdated infrastructure. Those streets were originally intended for 48’ trailers that were also narrower. The first time I took a 53’ through there I was carrying a hot load to a medical supply company, the location was so unbelievably tight that the nose of my tractor was sitting out in the street while they unloaded me. They had a few straight trucks docked on either side of me, I was the only large semi. Never going back, not worth the insurance risks or HOS burnt fighting traffic.
All the more reason they need huge dc’s up there to off load and let day cabs taken it in. I can’t deal with anymore north of Indiana or northeast of Central KY over
I Heard that! My first and only time was with a 53' foot, and it was Harrowing!?! 😷🤯
Eric Jr And technically 53’ trailers are not allowed in any of the NYC 5 boroughs.
Do trucks in the US have a required speed limit like in Europe?
@Camaro 1968 Hot load is usually a high value cargo/freight/load or client or both. It usually has restrictions and extra rules set by the carrier or shipper/client.
You did a great job. It's such an exhilarating moment when crossing that bridge to LEAVE

Also, if you hit a vehicle’s mirror when it is double parked, it’s technically their fault. I just keep driving. Shouldn’t have been parked there 🤷🏼♂️
thats what i said, jus rip the mirror off its not your fault
Azteck Happy insert Steve Urkel if cops see it, “Did I do that?!”
I once had to make a right turn in NYC, in my Classic, pulling 48' skateboard with a 10-1 spread. I'd already moved 2 lanes of traffic but there was a brand new Mercedes something or other double parked so that I still couldn't make the turn. A cop came up on horseback and told me to move along. I showed him the situation and his exact words were "run over it, you're blocking my intersection and it's illegally parked". I said "ok sir". I hated to do it but, I sent a beautiful car to the scrapyard that morning.
Mike Brown that’s so beautiful! The police out here are actually not against truckers and understand what we have to deal with everyday. I once took up the entire intersection of Madison Ave and 59th street (super busy intersection) because of the stupid double light system still in place in the center. I looked at the traffic officer and showed her the light, she looked at me, and we both shrugged hahaha. I didn’t do it on purpose. I have yet to have to clear a turn in that manner, but I know I will at some point. I’ve taken a turn from the oncoming traffic lane a few times because I have to and people slow down, honk, and get on with their day. Moral of the story: we have to be the boss when driving in NYC, and the police will actually help you out if you explain it to them rationally. Stay safe brother!
@@baddriversofthenorcalarea500 that wouldn't make sense to Californian would it?
New York is easy considering everything in Boston is just a paved over horse path. New York in the city is at least grided and numbered. Boston is just a bunch of horse paths that paved over and slapped a name on. Boston road maps look like a plate of spaghetti.

Ahh yes the cross Bronx. I run it almost every week. If you can’t get through there before 6am forget it!
i would never want to drive a tractor trailer, you guys are gods. and thanks for continuing to work through the pandemic
Before gps, more times than not, I would have my directions laid out. I’m rolling along with heightened state of awareness and you find yourself not being able to get a correct lane, or make a turn. Now you are pushing forward into the big unknown. Unable to turn around, unable to pull off to check your map... praying you can find an out. I think they were some of the most intense situations In all my experiences.

Every time I ever go to NYC, I always think to myself, how can all this chaos allow a city to function?
There are no lanes brother! You gotta make your own 🤣... we do what we need to do to get that truck to it’s next location. Take two lanes whenever you need to. Questionable turn, take two lanes. Getting too close to the cars on the side? Take two lanes and enjoy some coffee ☕️

Great video. Reminds me of when I lived in NYC (1986-90) and occasionally rented a car on weekends. By the time one had collected the car (Manhattan car rental places are mobbed on Saturday mornings) and got out of the City and through inner NJ . . . . the best part of the morning was gone!
Thanks for posting. I enjoyed riding along with you even though I dozed off a few times while sitting in traffic with you. LOL I definitely would have the patience or desire to drive in New York.
Hey man... Your video brought back so many memories... When you started out in the Hunts Point area of the Bronx and passed up the produce market on the right, I could only think about the times working with my Pop and older Brother on their trucks moving produce throughout the Bronx and upper Manhattan during many summers in the late 1970's to early '80's. I learned how to drive a truck then, and I can tell you that the city was probably crazier in those days if you could imagine. It was the times of the "Son of Sam" murders and when crack cocaine hit the streets. As you mentioned, no rules applied when driving. Double and triple parked cars were common. It was a frustrating nightmare trying to just do our job each and every day! After loading the trucks all morning, we left the market in Hunts Point and took basically the same route each day to start our deliveries. Jumped on the Bruckner then took the Cross Bronx Expressway towards the George Washington Bridge with inevitable daily traffic which what you experienced too. For my Pop, our usual first stop was the last exit right before you hit the GW Bridge at 181st Street. Then you had to deal with crazy traffic on the streets again and the typical NY attitude for the rest of the day with deliveries of the perishable produce. Many times the Thermo King refrigeration was broken. Pop's truck at the time was a GMC Brigadier with a Detroit turbo diesel straight job with ten wheels. I can remember one time in frustration, we were stuck on a one way street with a car parked in the middle so no way a truck could get by. After firing off the air horn for a few minutes and no response, he dropped the clutch and just "moved" the car out of the way. It felt like a small victory!! By the way, when that guy approached you for some money, back in the day his "buddy" would be at the back of your truck to see if he could open it up and grab what he could! Both my Pop and Brother carried fire arms (probably illegally) for protection. All I can say is that I learned more on that truck than at NYU!! I am now an eye doc for over 30 years, but appreciate what you truckers have to do! I am truly thankful for all your hard work and keeping America stocked especially during this COVID-19 crisis! Drive safely and thanks for the video!
I thought that area looked super familiar when that guy came up to the truck. I grew up right on the other side of that expressway. I don't think I even could handle driving a car there. I got my license at 25 yrs old in Florida. I went through 2 driving schools, too. 😂
I’ve been doing that route every day twice a day for 13 years, with a 80 ft car carrier, I just sit back and listen to audiobooks. I realize how much miss it now that I have to stay home since we not working because of the coronavirus.

I use to move over size loads through the city at night, going through Harlem we use to blow all the traffic lights, I use to have people jumping on and off the trailer and using it like a bus. That’s normal traffic on the Major Degnan by yankee stadium
Those 3 miles before the bridge are the worse no matter what time of day it seems, I've seen 3 different people begging for money in that same spot I feel they each do an 8 hour shift. As always good job.

Hate heavy traffic like that. I'd rather stay in the desert 🏜
I've never understood why some big cities don't have big wharehouses set up outside the city limits for the big trucks, then have little trucks distribute the loads...sounds too easy huh?/
Property value is expensive and most of the land is already zoned. Outside the city in NYC is Westchester county, literally one of the most expensive places in the US for property, or Long Island which isn't much cheaper. Plus nearly every spot of land there is zoned and established, there isn't a lot of new construction in these places. So you'd be looking at like a couple hundred million dollar warehouse for what? You are fantastic driver. What a relief to get on the interstate. I would need a year at least of on-board training to get be able to get that monster to that cabinet distributers dock!
I know the feeling I drove this everyday, I stay away from the cross Bronx use the Bruckner to get to the bridge
A real Bronxite the Cross Bronx is the worst.

My son was driving in Chicago years ago when he stopped at rail road crossing when passenger door flew open and a guy had a gun pointed at him, took all the cash he had. Dangerous places drivers have to go, thanks to all drivers. I've driven in n.y. also, stressful.
I thought I had it bad delivering a load in Newark! Well done, man.
