This video is exactly how my dad grew up. The farmers would hire the Romany men who worked hard all day but come evening there would be a sign on the pub door...... NO GYPSIES!
They were treated very unfairly. My dad is one of the most honest and generous men you could wish to know.

My grandparents were Romanichal and used to work on farms in Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire. I would love to know more about them and things like this are really nice to see!

Just want to say the word Gypsy is a misnomer and is often viewed as derogatory in the Roma community. Firstly, Roma people got labeled as “Egyptian” due to similar facial features and their color of their skin so the name Gypsy was imposed upon them not the other way around. Second, the Roma language is 100% still spoken today..there’s even different dialects depending on what region they traveled or resided within. Lastly, Irish travelers and Roma people are not the same.

I’d be (without wishing to cause an argument) genuinely interested as to why the culture has changed so much if people are claiming travellers today are still Romani Gypsy’s? Or are you saying they’re descendants of?
My mother, her sister & my grandparents (mothers parents) knew Romani Gypsy’s, they were on friendly terms & often used to buy peg dolly’s from them for my mother & Auntie (we’re going back to the late 40’s / 50’s). They used to help out on the farm my grandfather worked on, & my mother & auntie played with the children (this was in a village in the country); my mother often used to tell me how hard working they were, & how they’d graft from morning until night.
I can’t help but feel certain individuals in the travelling community give all of the travellers a bad reputation now; work shy, stubborn (because they are no longer able to do the jobs their ancestors may have once done - such as working the land), thieving, dishonesty, that’s not what Romani Gypsys were about. They worked (to my knowledge & understanding) tirelessly to build up trust with the communities around them. Now I feel like it’s a ‘them’ vs ‘us’ mentality & it’s really sad to see. I went to college with a girl who was a traveller, both her & her family were some of the nicest people I’d ever met.. I’ve also met some really unsavoury ones. I guess it’s like anything or anyone in life. Still, I’m actually interested in some of the cultural changes that have been made over the years!
Lovely video, thank you for uploading :)

x y But then why was land not purchased by them to live out their lives on? Why should they expect to park their caravans on public property? This land isn’t a free for all. Laws do change & the majority of people change with it. I have a travelling community who own their own building company in my area. They have an area out the back, with fields surrounding them, where they’ve lived for years.
Money doesn’t seem to be the issue, they often have enough for luxuries, & travel in large groups, so pooling together to buy a piece of land to build / live on seems only sensible when laws have changed so drastically that wherever they park they’re usually trespassing. They often seem exhausted & exasperated by having to continuously either move or or be forced to move on.

@@LauraBidingCitizen The vast majority of travellers live on licensed sites and pay their taxes. Don't believe the myths you hear. There has always been an "us vs them" mentality against Romanichals.

But to us she always says things like, “dikh eye” or “corrr he’s a wafti chavi ain’t he.” I’d love to learn the language more to pass on to my chavis/kids. Can anyone help? Devlesa

@ngklnkljn From my own research so far as I'm trying to work out whether I may have Romani ancestry. It seems to be that it's to do with where people have gone and how they've been treated. So for example, in other parts of Europe, partly because it would be easier to move by foot or by wagon, Romani people would be sticking closer together so you may well have a lot more marriage between families within the overall Romani population. There's also the fact that unfortunately in the rest of Europe people are *very* vicious towards Romani. I mean uneducated people here in the UK have been too but Europe was even worse in certain ways. Accordingly, Romani people in Europe have often kept to themselves or been forced to do so by European governments creating camps, ghettoes etc specifically for Romani groups. Finally though, the fact is that if you are travelling across the whole of Europe which is huge (and bearing in mind that in the present day there are roughly 16 million Romani people across Europe) then with whatever outside marriage is happening and the fact that children are an important part of the community and family, by the time you reach somwhere as distant as the British Isles relatively speaking you may well see a fair bit of mixed genetics and so forth. I mean, when you look at travelling Romani in the 17-1800s at least a lot of them have a darker more Indian skin tone and facial structure so it's probably the case that up until many Romani stopped travelling they would have kept to themselves, but at this point in time the most likely answer for lighter skinned Romani is a combination of migration throughout Europe and then a lot of travelling around Britain into the present day, where the population is somewhat less varied that the rest of Europe. :)
