- I myself am not a gypsy. The story behind this film was that I had just graduated from film school and was looking for work. So I wanted to make a film about something that was close to heart to put on my showreel. My father is Richard Heygate and he was writing a book at the time called "Bart and Bounder - Endangered species" It was focused on the cultures of the UK that were dying out. I had spent alot of time with the gypsy community during the writing of the book and they were nice enough to take me in as one of their own for a week. I met during my week all different colours and creeds of gypsies and each was nicer than the next. They have very strong family morales and are very proud people that have been persecuted for a long time.

When I was down in me luck I met some roma. I was scared of them ,I thought I would be ill treated and beaten. I COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG .these people gave tea hot food (something of which I had not seen for a week or two) work and money. They showed me respect and earned mine in return. I will never ever forget their friendship, their music and their way of life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤ 💙 💜

My family are from Kashmir we worked on the silk road and am proud to be Roma
My family is from that area. They made camps around Poonch but traveled up and down the mountain as nomads. They left due to oppression and traveled to Europe(their destination was USSR actually) According to them, Roma were people they got confused for only due to skin color and speaking another language. They met with the groups and they didnt share the same language nor had culture overlaps. So they were very different. They also never met anyone like them. So there was no Roma where they came from in India. Meaning ROmani and nomads of that time have become very different despite starting at almost the same place. That said, you are not Roma being from Kashmir unless your Kashmir relatives returned to India as Roma or you have Roma ancestors who were actually Romani that left India thousands of years ago. There is a believe there are people in India who came from the same ancestry as Romani but they are not the ROmani, but I think they are somewhere near the desert or something. Cant remember for sure.

Unknown User Like that the people in the video aren't Romany, but the true Romanies were believed to have come from India. The Romany were known to be very proud and not given to crime as the tinkers and pikies always have been. Mind, of course that doesn't mean all Romany were honest, nor that they didn't leave rubbish wherever they stayed. It was that they were generally known as having a lot of honest people amongst themselves.
The last well known Romany family in Britain, the Petulengro's, became settled. One lady had a boothe on Brighton pier back in the 60's, and during the 2000's another young Petulengro lady had a small shop for fortune telling on Blackpool seafront.
A lot of tinkers pretend to be Romany in the hope of gaining respect by misappropriating the identity. If they are Irish or Irish descent they are definitely not Romany.

I wonder if I have Romani blood in my family, since my ancestors came to America there isn't much knowledge of what they did in England, Ireland, Wales, I know my great great grandfather was a horse trainer in Russia for a Czar. I can say that I feel a great affiliation with the culture and music. Regardless I do study whatever I can get my hands on of the Romani way of life. Best quote during this was "there's good and bad in any group of people"

She would write ellio's pizza about not having enough mozzarella cheese until they would send her like 10 free boxes, her characteristics are strangely familiar to me but not from my parents tongues but the way she would hold my hand with her thumb in my palm it would relax me and her calm voice was Soo soothing, my grandfather stood no chance .. he fell head over heels and lived his entire life in a Shadow, I will always honor all of my relatives but my grandmother Irinka Cunsevich or so she said it was, was just a different type of soul my other grandparents were dull compared to her even though she never worked she always had a hustle and managed to make great money showing my grandfather she didn't need him in fact it was for show she loved him and maybe it was her game to keep him allured, I know until there 70's they had a healthy sex life and my grandfather worshipped her his whole life with her. I always wondered how she just left a man for my handsomely grandfather he was no smooth operator or Dr., but he was a handsome devil that could dance all night and was a former professional baseball player... Now this can prove nothing but I'm my heart and my mind I know my outlook is different my beliefs are staggeringly opposite of most in ways that I seem strict with morality yet loose with my own self being, I am a wanderer and I feel no need to settle anywhere ever.... I claim a wanders life and DNA would just say yes or no but man makes mistakes and many families were erased throughout history and even taken from their parents so they didn't grow up in the Romani Travelers way, but indeed I feel a great compassion to other travelers than any Christians or other faiths I've studied them all and I think they have great points but they are mans words not the Almighty Unknowns'. Who knows I'm 39 and I doubt I'll find out unless I go dig up Europe

My Nans an English gypsy, can’t go to her place without being fed, my grandad grew up in a London orphanage, she was lucky, the gypsy camp she grew up in (born in a carriage & lived) was sold to the council on the condition the ones that wanted to stay got the first houses, meaning although she received a lot of racism through the years, it was not as bad as it could be as most everyone were gypsies, her newest nieubor of 5years said she’s the best neighbour he’s ever had! My children are half. The bullying they got off other children for what they where. Even teachers never treated them the same. I've had to move house schools ect. Heartbreaking. There's good and bad in all walks of life. Two many people judge.
I feel you. Bargie traveller here who thought it was normal to be called pikey at school. From my experience it gets better as the other kids grow up because they learn to think for themselves and don't blindly repeat whatever racist things their folks have said. The younger generations are better at accepting people from all walks of life. Best thing you can do is teach your kids that the other kids just don't understand yet. As for the teachers, yeah they're just racist and there's nothing you can do but move on.

I think its very much possible that Irish Travelers and Romani mixed, which can explain all the white ppl. Just a theory! There has to be a reason why they still call themselves Romani and Id say some Romani ancestry is the reason. Why would they do it just to lie?
P.s. A white person can have none white ancestors. Romani person is someone who lives by Romapen or Romanipen, the way of Roma. Its not an ethnic group. Romani have adopted and invited people of many ethnic groups and made them Roma. You can be adopted by Roma Swedish kid and still become Roma. Romani never stopped mixing, unlike Irish Travelers and European Jews. So Romani are ethnically mixed, and not one ethnicity.

Dont judge a book by its cover. Anyone living Romapen is a Roma. They can be 💯 European and still be Roma. I am not Roma and even I know. I grew up in an area with many Roma due to my family being confused for Roma many generations ago. Being a white little girl I was often told to stay away from them or they would kidnap me because some of their kids were blonde and ppl assumed those kids were kidnapped(Roma allowed white ppl become Roma, aka kids were mixed) Ppl who knew my grandparents didn't like (white) me nor my family cause my North Indian and Central Asian great grandparents were accused of being Romani. According to my DNA my great grandma was actually mostly south west and around 6% South Asia. So my nomad great grandma's indian family most likely nomaded their way into North India(wasn't Indian) before getting out of there. Oh and I also found out I'm Finish and Yupik(thanks to my father). Yet, being 1/4 Asian mix, I'm still as white as white can be. So who knows, maybe they do carry South Asian blood. DNA testing is very occurate on what continents your ancestors are from. You can't decide it for them.
@x y Roma and Romani are the same ppl but they have different groups. Just in Poland there are like 5 different Romani aka Roma groups. There is no wrong or right spelling. Romanipan or Romapen are both the same. You have it as long as you live the way of Roma. Roma is what they call themselves. Romani is a word that I only heard from English speaking ppl. They always referred to themselves as Roma or Tzigan(Gypsy).

Roma people did NOT come from Israel. They originated in India and migrated to Eastern Europe: Romania, Czechoslavakia, Yougoslavia, (both of which broke up into smaller countries, as you know.) When people migrate, race mixing happens. See my comments above on more history of the Roma and the Irish. You are correct about the Irish Traveling People; they are not related to the Romany people. They are Indigenous to Ireland.
