I teared up too. That black belt means so incredibly much, the amount of sacrifice, blood sweat and tears that gets put on the mat everyday for years upon years. And to then have that invaluable belt be placed around your waist by your brother...priceless.

I still don't think much about the belting system. (Being a wrestler at heart) But I can certainly appreciate what the young man is saying and what Chewy did for him. What a beautiful show of emotion and brotherhood by you guys. This video should be an introductory of what BJJ should be. Chad talks about how he has no family outside of the gym, his family is the gym. And what does the word family mean? To some it's a mother, father, siblings, aunts , uncles, grandparents etc.. to others, family is a person or group of people who care for one another. People who are special in someone else's life. His family is the gym and the participants of the gym.. this video shows that there are great people out there who do care for one another. Coach Chewy is a prime example of how a leader runs his gym.. more than money, medals, plaques and awards, its life lesson's learned along the way, and the willingness to put other things aside to make sure this skinny kid who loved BJJ could fulfill his dream of one day wearing that black belt around his waist. Kudos to you Coach Chewy and to Chad as well. You guys are great human beings and are the prime example of how a gym should be ran. God bless you all

THIS.....is an amazing testament to Jiu jitsu....and to brotherhood, commitment and mentorship. DANG do i love videos like this and do I love Jiu Jitsu ! Nicely done Chewy.
Great mentoring Chewy! I'm so glad the kid lived and rejuvenated his life with the brotherhood. We lost a young man at our school due to depression. But the awesome thing is that his dad and I are close now. He's training BJJ with us now and I can see the pain of losing his child melt together with the love of the brotherhood. It's truly helping him deal with life. BJJ can save lives via the connections and friendships made. The dad is now one of my toughest blue belts...:)
The principle of a black belt is so beautiful, and he explains it really well. You grind for years and years to rank up through the different belts, until you finally reach the black belt. Once you're there and there is no more belts to chase, you are left simply with nothing to practice the art for other than for the love of it, and in the pursuit of unreachable perfection in it.
I don’t have any official BJJ training but I know people who are brown and black belts in BJJ such as my instructor (TKD) but getting your black belt in any style is an such an amazing feeling knowing all your hard work has paid off after all the hard work I actually failed the first time as had to wait another year before I could test again and man that feeling after being told I passed and actually getting my belt was such a great feeling and now your brother gets to experience the feeling of all his work paying off. Congratulations to him.

Dang!!! I was like, why all these crying comments?!?! And then... I was not expecting to get all choked up. That was powerful!!! amazing, and Congratulations!!
This was beautiful and so touching, the way you speak says so much about you as a coach. You are a true leader and wonderful role model. What an incredible moment among brothers.
Greetings from South-Africa! Congrats to Chad, fos getting stuck in there. But even MORE so for you, coach. Going through him on his journey for a decade, driving him to class, being there through his dark times in his youth: Even if you just started and did BJJ for saving 1 person, you completed a destiny FAR MORE meaningful in life than just sport and sport achievements! Because long after the sports awards are over, and he's too old to continue, your input into his life will still guide and help him everyday. Thanks for people like you who make the world a better place !
I am really enjoying it. It's incredibly deep! Lots of tapping, but I still notice improvement. Just keeping at it! The place I train is a Gracie Academy CTC so it was all self defence until I got into the advanced class in September. Really loving it.
Hmm... Nice yeah I tap ALL THE TIME. that's good for us! Lol. Well your jiu-jitsu journey now begins .. I quit a long time ago or I'd be a black belt by now! So.. ....... ......damnet.... I just rejoined a few weeks ago.. now that I'm older I was struggling with a few injury including the lower back and basically felt like broken ribs. But if u get a back injury then don't over stretch it , instead Dona downward dog but instead of focusing on the legs, bend them, and focus on the back, and spinal alignment and spinal lengthening... So basically , instead of stretching your back , your relaxing it....I injured it worse stretching it....sorry for the rant, just food for thought. :)
Holy cow that was a great story. I always tell people that for most people in BJJ, even if they train for the rest of their lives, they will likely never make black belt. Most people think that is sad because they think that belt is the objective - it isn't. But it is such a great honor to have earned it that I can see why that young man is so emotional. Hell, I got veklempt and I don't even know any of the people in that video.

Beautiful! I legitimately choked up. I’m a one stripe brown belt and can only hope when my day comes, it’s similar to this. “Just keep showing up”
Brothers in arms...some martial artist respect
This was beautiful and so touching, the way you speak says so much about you as a coach. You are a true leader and wonderful role model. What an incredible moment among brothers.
Damn....those pictures at the end with the white and yellow belts got me 😭😭😭
Greetings from South-Africa!
Dan bilzarian is that you?
LOL -- yeah, he looks exactly like Bilzerian.
. . . . . . .
Thats a compliment sir!
It's a fair one..
Wasn’t dan blitz a SEAL?
The hug when he was giving him his belt was very touching... Great video!!
Really touchy
This needs to go viral. Much respect to you BJJ family, from a Muay Thai practitioner ;)
What a magical moment!
Josh Leland jiu-jitsu's seems full of those ;). join if your debating.
Been training since last January!
Oh man! That's awesome , so how are you doing?
The world needs more people like this investing in our youth. What an inspiring story. Glad you posted this. Keep looking after each other!!
Are you promoting people or chopping onions. Tearjerker!
Both?
***** No. I'm only a blue belt. Plus I was kidding because it was emotional ceremony and I didn't way to say, "Bro, you made me cry."
WOW!! What a back story!! Glad to see positive outcomes such as this Chewy. Congratulations and Thank you for sharing the journey. OSS!!
21 years old. More grown then most men I know.
Wow, I think something got in my eyes.... strange, they keep watering...
This really hit the spot man. You're a legend Chewy!
Since when was Dan Bilzerian a black belt?
Since 2011. . . damn Blizerian comments.
I guess it could be worse right?
