  • It is Mental Health Awareness this week and the theme this year is ‘Nature’ which I think is absolutely perfect and very relevant right now. In this video I am sharing with you how a sensory walk in nature can help improve your overall wellbeing.
    Mentioned in this video;
    ↠ Ordnance Survey inspired this video after I read they had teamed up with the national charity Sense to support their work on a programme of sensory walks;

    Wonderful video Mary! Hiking using all your senses...sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell makes the experience that much more memorable. "Nature" is the perfect theme for Mental Health Awareness. Vis medicatrix naturae

    The most beautiful video and message! This should be on NatGeo for sure! Shot, edited and narrated amazingly, you are such a natural 💚 Like you I’ve been doing so many of these things for years without knowing that it had a name, and after watching this I was even more mindful just on the walk around town this morning listening to the birds, enjoying the flowers and bees, the vibrant greens of the grass in the park 👍🏻💚💚💚 thank you!

    Excellent video. I do something similar that i call "Dream Walks" where, as i hike, i observe the sights, scents, sounds, and sensations around me and consider their symbolic meaning. In other words, I ask myself, "If this were a dream, what would such and such symbolize to me?" A tree might stand for strength or wisdom, growing old, or starting again. The wind might call to mind the voice of the Spirit. The path might remind me of my own journey along the road of life. Meditating on these symbols gives me thoughts to pray over and puts me in touch with what's going on inside me - the sadness, the joys, the struggles, and the overcoming. I find such walks to be very soul-cleansing. The woods become a confessional, where mistakes are left on the side of the trail, the climb to the summit a metaphor for my own journey of renewal. I love the idea of mindfulness and experiencing the moment that you talked about. Such a pleasant and peaceful approach to how you share your insights and your journey with others. Thank you!

      I like what you explain as Dream Walks, it really does make a huge difference connecting to nature this way. Thanks for taking the time to comment Mark!

    After watching this I realised I have been doing sensory walks without knowing it. Lovely film. Great way of explaining our relationship with nature and wellness.

    I've done this in one form or another, I think, since I was a teenager. I love taking time out of time in nature, and when you combine the intense sensory observation with a kinetic activity like walking or running, it really reboots your body and your outlook. This is a fascinating topic -- thanks for bringing it to the fore and devoting a vlog to it.

    How soothing. Too often we're on a mission to walk from A to B...getting those 'steps' in when all it takes, is to stay awhile and reap the benefits. Thank you Mary X

    I have just done a 15 mile hike and all I could smell was the relentless odour of chemicals the farmers are spraying on the crops at the moment.( I live in an intensive arable farming area). I reckon 100 years ago the natural smells of the countryside must have been so nice compared to the factory farm smells of today!
