Hey Bhavana, I just want to tell u how much I enjoy ur recipes. My family is going veg for 40 days. Thanks to your show, I am inspired to cook veg food. Can u do a recipe for cabbage carrot salad gujarti style
Just an follow up- I just made this recipe with all the ingredients(cumin, fenugreek and green chillies); It was excellent. I certainly will make it again and again. Thank you.:)
@einsteinwallah2 I am Gujarati as well and all dhal I have ever eaten has always had cinnamon, and sometimes has had red chili depending on the cook. Also Bhavna stated very clearly in the video that she does the tomatoes in this way because it is her preference to not have the skin and seeds. Every cook in my family makes dhal in a different way, obviously the variation is even more outside of one family.
Thank you Bhavana - This Daal was ever present on our Dining Table in my Hostel and we kids used to have multiple servings of this daal just to fish for the boiled 'Sing' in it. I always used to wonder - If it is indeed Daal , then where is the daal in it ! - Mystery Solved - you strain out the Daal after boiling and mashing out all the goodness from it into Daal Water.
@einsteinwallah2 Hi It's just common sense, she did say few things optional under ingredients list and I am agree that everyone makes things differently. I remember my mom made dal almost same and seen other Gujaratis making it may just few variantions but the concept remais the same.
I use the oily toor dal too. Bhavna what size is your pressure cooker? Was just wondering? I store my cilantro in a muslin cloth too( I got it from Joanne Fabrics) and store in a steel container with the holes in, also my green chiles that I don't grind I store it the same way. Thanks for awesome gujarati dal, Good job!
Thank you very much for the recipe. I have a doubt- You have listed cumin and green chillies, but you didn't add in the actual recipe. Perhaps you might have substituted fenugreek(not listed) for cumin and red chilli powder for green chillie paste. right??
hi,, can i just add the dal an tomato directly in the pressure cooker,, without putting another pot inside the pressure cooker?? why have u done this?? also, can i use oily toor dal for this recipe?,,thanks.
Hi bhavna, could u pls tell me the recipe for the vadi u put in the dal.seems so yummy.I live in Canada and we get good sun only now..winter it is bad..so I want to make vadis now..If you can share the recipe, that will be awesome. My thanks in advance.
Marissa3leal It always depend on daals. Some daals take more some less. When I take Tuvar dal, I add 2 cups of water for 1/2 cup dal. Of course, I soak dal. Remember you will add more water later as well while preparing it. But at 2 cups must for 1/2 cup dal in pressure cooker.
kokum, garcinia indica is good to loose weight.also in very fatty type recipes it is best souring item.in goa n coorg they use this with pork.coz it dosent allow all the fat to absorbed!
Which brand dal are you using ? Because when I cook Dal didn't cook very well and I tried with tomato that didn't cook at all so can you reply me please? Thanks bhavna
In the beginning you are trying to sell as if in a TV commercial. This is not traditional Gujarati Dal but Bhavna's Gujarati Dal. Most of time peanuts and tomatoes are omitted. And when tomatoes are used not like this. We gujjus who cook this daily will simply add largish chunks of tomatoes when boiling dal or omit it altogether. Also please omit red chili and cinnamon and curry leaves from tadka. Make tadka simple gujarati tadka. No need impress north/south indics. Our food is great as it is.
yummy - there are so many variations on this recipe.
