Well THAT explains why you have to do so many rod recoveries. I never realized just leaving one sitting in a manhole while messing around in another one can suck it in. I've always wondered how so many do it yourselfers manage to lose them down the pipe and now I know! Excellent video.

There is a very easy solution to prevent the rods from going down the pipe.
Add a cross handle to the end of the rod. Take a short piece of a broken rod with the female threads and add a simple cross piece to it, (a wood dowel, stub of 1/4 copper pipe, or even a long bolt will work) and screw it to the last rod as you go.
Easy peasey lemom squeezy and no more lost rods.
Call me weird but I do enjoy watching these drains being cleaned even the really gross ones.

Good recovery! I had a rod whipped out my hand once by the force of the water draining out of our inspection chamber and upstream pipe work. Thankfully it snagged on the edge and I got my foot on it before it vanished into the depths. A lucky escape!
It's not Andy's fault Jem. You told him to run to catch the unblocking. He can't babysit the rod and the camera. It's trying to do 2 or 3 jobs in 1 second. You really should invest in a couple more Gopro cameras so you can set one up on the clogged drain and one on the empty one. That would be super satisfying to see both angles.
A full Manhol, wets to great Mass the Block. Two Man have a long Time to Work, then final the Drain is Unblock. And in the Firm to this Time wash the Boy the red Car. Greeting 🇦🇹

Good job guys. You could make a little handle out of a piece of pipe with a fitting in the middle, that would screw onto the end of your rod. It would keep a plunger rod from going down the drain and give you more torque on the little screw type rod. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!

Andy you made a bigger job for Jem by forgetting the plunger . But Jem should of said bring the plunger with you . So nobody at fault just made the job harder with the plunger being stuck in the pipe
In the gush besides it being B.E.A UTIFUL I saw a piece of the pipe come out as well, my guess is wipes are getting caught on that deformation.

so how about a a screw in larger diameter rigid handle/disk? You can have all the extensions, then in the final part screw in, say, a 6 inch disk for a 4 inch rod. then it would never get sucked down. That 1 error turned a quick and esy job into someting much more involved. Couple of quids worth of Perspex cut to size and a few pence of threaded bar.
