The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

What about "hell"? Jimmy Dean used that word and Ed Sullivan had no problem with it! I know that in his description of "man made hell" he wasn't meaning for it to be a cuss word, but for the sixties, I was pretty sure that was not an acceptable word for public television shows!

There was a guy in our neighborhood his name was John he was a very good friend of my aunt they were best of friends growing !! He did 2 tours of Vietnam as a United States Marine he had come home on leave he was dressed in his military uniform he always had a nice word for me sometimes just kidding around with me !! I started singing Big John big bad John because even as a teenager he was a real bad ass. I often think of him when I hear this song ! Rest in Peace John you were a class act !!

One of the biggest selling records of the entire 1960s decade! He had other pop country crossover hits, like P.T. 109 and Little Black Book. ABC gave him a one hour variety show, The Jimmy Dean Show ran for 3 seasons, 1963 to 1966. He did a bit of acting in a James Bond movie, was a substitute host for Johnny Carson in the '60, and yes, then started his sausage company. A really good man and fine country entertainer in his time. Thanks for posting this of Jimmy on Ed Sullivan.

My wife has always enjoyed this descriptive song growing up, but especially since December 21, 2000 when her younger brother John “Jody” was murdered at work in Alabama while he and his boss were closing the store that his lady boss owned. Two males came into the store as he was finishing up mopping the floor in the back, when he noticed his boss was behaving differently, so he put the mop aside and walked slowly to the counter where the cash resister was and saw the gun pointed at her, and according to her, John “Jody” held up his hands and went behind the counter and opened the cash register, then stepped back slightly in front of his boss with his hand raised. One of the male robbers grabbed the money and the other male holding the gun shot my wife’s brother in the heart, then they both left the store. On Christmas morning the police called the family to let everyone know that they had arrested both male murdering thieves. His boss told the family that John “Jody” had protected her by standing slightly in front of her, which she said was no surprise to her because he was always protective of her, and always taking on the heaviest of the work.

I was a toddler when this was a hit on the radio. I remember the song being played quite a bit during the summers of the mid 1960's though.
Right now we're coming up on Memorial Day. I'm supposing that "Big John" was a must play on pop and country radio stations on Memorial Days back then. I can still hear it on those AM only radios. FM radio, especially FM stereo radio was not in use then. If so not many would have had FM radios yet. Detroit didn't start putting them in cars until the late 1960's. I believe Ford Motor Co. was the leader in that.

Jimmy Dean was a handsome guy with an affable personality. Very easy-going and easy to like. More than any other issue of his, this song brought him cross-over fame and really gave a push to his career.
He was also an astute businessman: He well knew the music business is Very Fickle; today's hit maker is tomorrow's unknown, thus, he got into the sausage business. Not a sexy product, but one everybody wants, all the time....

I'm old enough to remember when he sang this.
Made his money tho with his first product, Jimmy Dean sausage and it grew from there.

Funny how the Network censors allowed Jimmy Dean to utter the line MAN-MADE HELL, yet would never had let him use the original version of the end lyrics:
AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS MINE LIES ONE HELLUVA MAN!
Seems only the monaural single cut had that line while the stereophonic album version was the one you hear him perform on ED SULLIVAN...🇵🇷🇺🇸😎🦂

Jose - Vaughn Monroe's huge 1949 hit version of "Ghost Riders on the Sky" included Hell - I suppose since it references the name of a place. So it wasn't considered swearing in that context. Most likely the same in this situation.

I still have my 45 copy of this song with that original ending. I think it was a much better end to the song.

Wasn't it "... one hell of a big man"? Thanks for the reminder, brought me back to my grade school years! I thought that it was kind of cool that the radio could say hell in front of my parents but I couldn't! . Times sure have changed! NOT FOR THE BETTER!
