Know what you talk about, been there for quit a while till someone helped me understand the basics of it.
1. There are certain combinations of notes that for some reason go nice with each other - those are called scales (look those patterns up and practice them)
2. In order to match a scale to a song, find the first note of the first chord in that song and match it to a scale which starts with the same note. All you need to do is just to play random notes on that scale along with the rythem of the song - and that's what's called improvising.
There is alot more to it, but that's the basic idea pretty much.
You need to learn D minotr 9...and 8. 10 is good too
David, D minor 8 is not a chord, a 8th is a octave, and is therefore the same note.

@@theepicgamer1196 He's playing Amin pentatonic over Dmin9. So A(5th) C(b7) D(root) E(9) G(11). So in conclusion when you have a minor chord with the natural 9, you can play a pentatonic scale on the 5th, so this add the colour of the 11th which works fine on minor chords and most minor scales

this reminds me of a gig i played (as bassist) with some solo guitarist. i was invited on the fly, I asked if we could get some practice in before hand. turns out i had to figure it al out my self while on stage and this guy just didn't communicate at all. he had written the songs him self so i obviously didn't know them. the whole experience was super cringe.

After more or less ten years of playing I'd sadly give the same reaction :P
But... he was playing in the right key the whole time. He was playing in A minor and the backing track was in A minor too - the chords sounded like Dm9 / G#maj7#5 / Am7. A minor might not really work with the second chord, but it works fine with Dm and Am. Of course he WAS just playing the pentatonic scale up and down, but the problem wasnt the key :D

Music theory people be like, it's a minor over a triad time signature change blah blah blah. I be like, practice some scales and chords. Proceed to just use my ears to know what to play without knowing what the notes I'm playing are called, they are just correct ones. So if I go to a jam session were someone says throw me a d minor I will look at them like I have no brain. But if I hear them play it I can just play along( depending upon the complexity) I'm not John Petrucci lol

Reminds me of a gig I played. Was in drop D tuning and had my drop tuner pedal set for a tone drop to make my guitar drop C. I changed guitars but forgot the click my drop tuner off. So the next song I was a whole step down while the band was playing what felt like scary jazz over top of my rhythm. Haunts me to this day.

Probably method of practice. Me too (sorta, I do know some scales) but I know I got really good at violin so I don't have any excuses. I just haven't practiced the right way consistently for long enough.
Over 25 years of playing, don't know single scale, can't read music, cannot improvise. Can name a handful of cords. Beat that!
(I can sort of play with a lot of noise and errors, horrible phrasing, Fermented Offal Discharge solo at ~ 75% speed)

Nothing is wrong with it lol. It's just boring. In jazz people usually pick their scales based on each chord, not just stick to one simple one for the whole song and play up and sown the scale. Technically it was in key as others have said but it seems like a lot of those others are missing the point which is that it's only supposed to be funny, not actually make some sort of statement about the "wrong scale" or whatever. He didn't play for very long so it's harder to hear how boring it was and you probably have more of an ear for blues rock than jazz.
Sorry I know you were just being funny too but this is kinda my way of responding to people who are like "but he was playing a valid scale because blah blah blah" without being TOO much of a dick. Yeah, he knows.

Dude, he was playing a minor pentatonic over a D-9 : Abmaj7 progression, it has all notes of d dorian, a mode that looks fine for me on D-, and it has b9, 3rd, 11, #5, and Major 7th of the chord of Abmaj7 (probably was intended as the enharmonic F-7(9)). The guys bullying him for playing that E over the second chord, not understanding that he had the artistic intention to play that #5 of Ab, not talking about he playing A over that chord, at 1:51, clearly a b9 used to build tension to increase the interest in his solo, are total morons.
