  • Sonny Okosun (January 1, 1947 in Benin City, Nigeria -- May 24, 2008 in Washington DC) was a musician from Nigeria. His surname is sometimes spelled Okosuns and first name Sunny. He was one of the leading Nigerian musicians from the late 70's to mid 80's.
His first band, The Postmen, was formed in 1964. In 1969 he joined Melody Maestros, a band led by Victor Uwaifo. From 1972 to 1974 he led a group known as Paperback Limited and then formed a new band, Ozziddi. From then on, he released several albums either with Ozziddi, or solo recordings.
His 1977 song, "Fire in Soweto", became a major international hit. He featured in the anti-arpatheid album Sun City, and his song "Highlife" was in the soundtrack of 1986 film Something Wild. His mainstream success started to fade in the late 1980s, but he continued his career as a gospel musician under the name Evangelist Sonny Okosun.
He died aged 61 of colon cancer in May 24, 2008 at Howard University Teaching Hospital, Washington DC.
His musical styles ranged included reggae, highlife, Afro-funk and gospel among others. He made music in Edo language, Yoruba language and English

I am from Mexico and I love this music! It is not just Nigeria or Africa that face these problems, in Latin America we face the same exact problems in our countries. Corruption, greed, politicians, and sometimes even the public themselves are the things ruining all of our nations. Sonny Okosun made some great music and it is really a shame that not many people outside of Africa know him or his music.
    Best Wishes from Mexico

We are 60 years today but our days are filled with tears.
Today we no longer cry but shed blood as tears.
Today our blood has become like rain that quench the thirst of a desert.
Today, we are too divided to be United.
Today , we are strange bed fellows.
Today , we go to bed hungry and wake up hungry .
Today, our blood is like the meals served in Royal court.
Today , we seek another country to call our own because what was ours is lost.

Most of the politicians in power today were very young then. Really, Sonny Okusun must be considered as a citizen of the world as Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh,Luky Dube and many others around the world. He was engaged musician and in the 70s years was the leader among the african musicians who struggled for justice, liberty and equality in societies. Africa lost a great thoughtful. This song was made some 35 years ago, and it is still as relevant (if not more relevant) today, as it was in 1983. It means that whatever plagued our country then is still alive and, has even grown stronger.
Will things ever change? Will God send Nigeria a 'Moses' or, will He send his angels to take a walk throughout the length and breath of the country to see if our cries for redemption is as bad as we say? God we need a righteous, intelligent, benevolent, unifying and articulate leader. We need Jesus.
    God save Nigeria!!!

I am of opinion that Nigerians should use this song as national anthem

@@samuelnnaji8047….That song will not work as a national anthem. The song ask a question...which way to go? An anthem is a solidarity, hopeful, assurance and a pledge for a country's up coming generation. It also give hope and belief and such anthem must carry messages of hope. The song which way to go, is an uncertainty song, it meant the country is in a state of confusion. It will not be accepted by the people as an anthem. Though Nigeria may be a lost nation politically, there are still some hope as the country is blessed abundantly but poorly managed. The country is fixable, and surely the people know the root of the problem.

You really do not understand why I said that. Yes, all those things you mention should be what make up an anthem.l said it because I thing it remind us each time where we're going as a nation.
