When did hunting high fence be considered “fair chase”?

No real hunter would ever, ever consider this real hunting. At all. Ever. Absolutely disgraceful.

So the American Indians weren't "real hunters"? They did everything they do here except maintain fences. They kept herds of deer that were so tame you could just about go up and pet them. Many management techniques were used to achieve this. From burning out forested to clear them for ideal deer habitat, to planting lots of crops JUST for the deer, planting mast trees for deer and birds, etc etc. They would drive game and make decoys too. So making an area favorable for deer and basically stocking it is perfectly fine in my book. Actually I think it's nice that these gentlemen are basically keeping up with ancient traditions whether they know it or not. It's nice to see they understand, appreciate, and care for these animals.

I am not either for or against high fence hunting, but let’s be real about it and not sugar coat it call it what it is.People who promote fenced hunts spend most of their time trying to convince other hunters that it’s actually cool. I also look at fences hunts a lot like hunting over corn piles. Neither for or against it.

Yeah about hunting over corn piles --- believe it or not, that's how the American Indians used to hunt. Or at least the Shawnee and Iriquois. They would plant lots of extra corn and deer goodies JUST for those deer to forage. It would encourage huge herds of deer to set up shop around those plots which would be near the village.

Yeah people that get upset at this don't have any sense. The native americans would do similar stuff. Now they didn't have steel wire fences, but they would use every technique at their disposal to manage herds of deer. They would plant huge fields of "sacred corn" that nobody would go near or harvest. Well it wasn't "sacred", it was food for the deer. They were smart and made the deer come near the village. They would do the same thing with mast (nut) trees, planting them like crazy because they're a valuable food source for all wildlife and the people too (walnut, hickory, chestnut, etc). I am talking about the tribes around the great lakes region and ohio river valley. Like I said they didn't have fences but they took full advantage of some of the islands up there in the waterways, which were a natural barrier. They planted crops and trees there and made it deer heaven and even stocked it with deer in some cases. I say fence hunts are in the purest and finest ancient traditions in hunting!

I enjoyed Keith Warren's comment "If you don't like it don't shoot" as well as earlier comments comparing the many hunting styles...with dogs, over corn piles, during vulnerable rut, via massive drives, etc.
If you've tried it you can certainly speak to it. If you haven't, it is much like comparing the frustrations with elected officials yet you have not taken time to vote! Best wishes with the hunting decisions...

The American Indians used to drive game and "hunt over corn piles" too. I put that in quotes because they would plant fields of corn and vegetables that were "sacred", that is to say, planted solely to attract deer. People were not allowed to go near them and they wouldn't harvest the "sacred corn". The "sacred" fields of corn ensured huge herds of deer were aways near the village.

Why not raise cows and allow hunters shoot them?
Fair chase my butt, nothing about high fences is fair chase. You want fair chase, go pick a state, find public land, scout it, pattern the deer, set up a stand, and hunt.

Funny you mention that. The indians used to call deer "their cattle" (Cherokee said this to Daniel Boone). Do you know WHY? They weren't just being poetic. They would use management techniques to ensure large herds near the village. They would plant huge fields of "sacred" corn that nobody was allowed to touch or harvest. It was done for the sole purpose of maintaining a herd of deer. The deer in these herds were semi-tame and you could practically go up and pet them. Does that offend your sensibilities too? Finding out that the "purest natural human hunters" used basically the same techniques as these guys? I don't get the hate.

I think " High Fence Hunting " also known as " Free Range Hunting " or " Management Hunting" can definitely capture the true spirit and essence of hunting if they are run in an ethical and responsible manner on large properties. Sure, we would all prefer to hunt in pristine wilderness environments with plenty of game, with plenty of time to find sign and pattern our prey but in reality a busy person with limited resources can still very much enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of bringing home the meat from such a farm.
I disagree with the likes of Matt and Meghan, losers buy their meat from highly marked up in price supermarkets with no knowledge or participation in the processes involved and are simply ignorant and intolerant.
In my mind the ethical line should be drawn between, boots on the ground hunting as opposed to mowing down prey from a helicopter. In New Zealand for example hunters ! ( using that term loosely ) from all parts of this world pay absolute top dollar and are simply flown over gullies and ridges, they shoot a deer whilst hovering above the animal and then hoist the animal out. In my mind THAT is culling not hunting and deserves the criticism, not this type of managed hunting.
I enjoy your vids Keith, keep them coming mate !

lol.. fair chase. I raised my sons as true hunters and if they ever came to me and asked me to hunt canned I would feel like a failure as father. You should be ashamed.

What is funny is that most people hunting high fence operations are the people who have tons of money... buy some damn land, put a food plot in, build or hang stands, and have fun....

How much does one of these "hunts" cost? I agree with you. I'm sure theyre expensive and the money would be better spent on your own small patch of grass.
