History Time is great if you want to learn about this period in depth. He has other awesome videos, but in my opinion, his stuff on the British history is the best.

Why the hell have i never heard of Æthelflaed up until this point?!?! She was an utter military beast surely she should be more celebrated? I should petition Tamworth council to commission a statue or something...
It also doesn't help that the various versions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the main sources on the era, go out of their way to downplay and erase Aethelfaed's achievements. Often describing her activities as building projects rather than conquests.
The main reason is the severe downplaying of her deeds that the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle handed to her. That being a pro-Wessex pro-Edward source, and she being a potential rival to the power of Wessex and rallying point for potential Mercian independence movements.
I also heard about her only now, but i am from different country, so it`s not so strange. But nevermind. I like her a lot already :) that woman was badass
The whole the familly mate ! Consider that Alfred's the father, AEthelflaed the most badass women of the century the daugther with Edward unifier of Engalnd the son & borther ! That's a badass dynasty ! :p
Perfect type to deal with baggart brawalers like the vikings really were. People only capable of feeling good when destroying the lives of unprepared people. They were ridiculous by it, ridiculous when showed the world how thay can fall before the power of strong enough men.
The fact that I knew so little about these events and the excellent way you present them really fascinated me . I would love to see a continuation of the series
Stay tuned for a separate video covering the "GREAT SILENCE of 3:09 - 4:48" Much has been said about this mysterious time in early Britain/Dane history, although no one was listening! From what I can glean, it all began at 3:09 although some say it was closer to 3:10 when one fine morning in the middle of the night two dead boys stood up to fight, back to back they faced each other drew their swords and shot each other! The deaf Knight "earsoff" heard this noise and went to kill the two dead boys. If you don't believe this lie is true ask the blink monk, he saw too!! DUN DUN DUNNNNN!!!! Jack ~'()'~
Putting your granddaughter in a monastery for Life just so you could expand. Sounds like my every single Crusader Kings 2 campaign. Also you are great as always, no other words needed
They were trying to create a unified, consolidated England, a single aligned England. Having her alive and ruling Mercia as a separate kingdom would leave the land open and vulnerable to attack like what had happened in the initial Dane invasions. Sending her off to become a nun was the best and kindest solution to the problem.
Edward the Elder, you are definitely in the running for the award for the absolute worst family member in British History. Your sister dies after spending her life in efforts to continue the work of reconquest, and helping you secure your own throne. On her death, you immediately invade and imprison her only child in a monastery for life. That's a Crusader Kings II level of "dick move".
Zacharie Guillerey i think he could have let her live out her life in freedom, especially considering the good treatment Aethelstan received in Mercia.
Several historians have argued that Edward was in fact a pretty unpopular monarch during his life. His reputation was arguably built upon the backs of his scholars and scribes, many of them inherited from his father.
History Time I did not even know Edward had any reputation. I just thought that he was the son on Alfred and the father of Aethelstan. I only thought that Alfred, Aethelstan and Canute were the kings truly remembered as great. And maybe Edmund Ironside and King Harold.
Love it. After that do take the week off . Awesome job and love the level of detail you provide in your videos. Keep up the awesome work when you do get back.
Maldon is pronounced Maul-don. Derby is Darby - like the horse race. Other than that, great video. Aethelflaed is one of the most-overlooked people in English history.

There are so many "Aethels" in this story that it almost like a Monty Python skit. "This is my brother Aethelstan, and this is my brother Aethelbill, and this is my sister Aethelbob. Ah, and here's my other sister." "Does her name start with Aethel too?" "No. We just call her Stinky. Good morning Stinky. How are you today?"
Seems the hardy Norsemen had forgotten the hardy roots of their Anglo-Saxon cousins. Edward was pretty badass, I can't wait to see the episode with Erik Blood-axe and Sweyn Fork-beard/Canute the Great. I'd also like to see videos of the Viking age within Scandinavia because I feel like it's under represented, people seem to appreciate the Norse's external wars rather then their just as interesting internal wars for some reason, despite having formed most of the countries of Norse Scandinavia's modern borders at that point.
I've done a bit of amateur research on aethelflaed. There is nothing to suggest she fought in the front lines, but she was certainly at some of the battles and not just for moral support, but as commander. It's recorded her giving tactical instructions. The more I look into it the more I'm convinced that she rather than Edward may have been the senior partner of the alliance. While technically incorrect the Irish called her queen of the Saxons and queen of all the Saxons. She declared war, made peace treaties herself and those she defeated surrendered to her not Edward. She may have been subordinate in rank, but I think Edwards big sister wasn't meekly doing his bidding.
*Forcing someone into religious retirement was practiced all over the world, as it was considered gracious to not kill a deposed and disarmed enemy who was no longer in a position to do anything to you anymore anyway.* It was basically seen as a more "useful" kind of house arrest, giving the prisoner something permanent to do so you won't have to worry about their vengeance.

Ultimately the Vikings win this struggle (Vikings vs Anglo Saxons) with Cnut the Great becoming King of England, and later on the Normans (Norsemen) conquering England. 2066 will be 1000 year anniversary of Norman and Williams bloodline ruling England.
@Buddy12 Don't be a salty Anglo Saxon hahaha. You know what I meant. William was a descendant of Rollo duke of Normandy who was a Viking, that makes William descendant of a true Viking. And they spoke french because the Normans were/became part of the French aristocracy with French subjects so it became a necessity. I've read countless books on the Normans, the ones in France, Southern Italy/Sicily, and the holy lands; they were just amazing at adapting. Perfect Conquerors.
@Buddy12 Jesus man, Maybe read properly. I never said they didn't. But Queen of England now and her dynasty are the descendants of the Normans, Rollo and William the Conqueror. Like it or not they beat the Anglo Saxons and ruled/ruling soon to be 1000 years.
@Buddy12 Omg man, why are you so triggered??? Do you need a safe space or something? Calm down man. What I said is still true. And yea its quite relevant hahaha. Don't you see for the current house to claim descendant from House De Normandie and William the Conqueror means prestige, legitimacy with a 1000 years of ruling over England, it is history, history means everything for royalty. Even the Plantagenet Rulers kept boasting how they're the descendant of the "War like Normans and their ancestors". End of discussion, I wont argue with u anymore. But you can keep going lol.
The vikings were like Timur. Show up, beat the crap out of everyone than vanish. Its interesting how sudden rises to power or attacks end as they start. Like putting a log in front of a door....
More like they get powned easily by any decent army or society. If you take attention to all those viking battles, they lost almost every single one against prepared fighters. They were just a bunch of stealers that robbed farmers nothing else., Everything you heard about them is pure nordic self praising white supremacy bullshit
Where’s the next video? Became a fan after watching these three videos on Britain, appreciate all the hard work you guys have been doing just thought there would be more to come on this subject. I’m waiting! Lol
*Especially the time period when the Scots had ambitions of being a European power, and when the French befriended the Scots so they could surround England.*
Dam fine video! I really hope, that you continue this series all the way up till 1066 and the battle of Hastings/Stirling bridge. To many vikings fokused stories end their run to early (thinking about extra historie) If you end it before 1000, you miss some of the greatest danish kings, that conquered all of England several times.!
Yeah, but she did it without dragons and magical powers. Don't expect any film, or BBC series soon......she was English, white and against foreign invaders.
Unfortunately audio cuts out at around 3:10 and doesn't come back until 4:48. These videos are typically of high and superior quality which is why this surprised me. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue or if it is just me. Great video otherwise.

Ser Devil if I understood correctly ,that was his daughter's (which he married to secure alliance with Mercia) daughter
It was Alfred's daughter who was married to Mercia, then Alfred died. So it's his sister's daughter.

Buddy12 the Queen of England can trace her ancestry back straight to William the Conqueror he is not lying just look it up
Excellent use of music in this episode. See you after your break :)
I am not going to take one. :-) Thank you!
The vikings were like Timur. Show up, beat the crap out of everyone than vanish. Its interesting how sudden rises to power or attacks end as they start. Like putting a log in front of a door....
These videos get better and better.
Thank you, Rex, we are doing our best. :-)
You guys are doing an awesome job! :D
More like they get powned easily by any decent army or society. If you take attention to all those viking battles, they lost almost every single one against prepared fighters. They were just a bunch of stealers that robbed farmers nothing else., Everything you heard about them is pure nordic self praising white supremacy bullshit
Tyrannosaurus Rex like your species bra
Will you please do 'The Great' King Cnut and his Northern Empire? Great video btw I loves your guys content
Watch the last kingdom on Netflix if you guys like these stuff
Must say the bagpipes gave a good feel to this video! Great work as always!
Thank you for watching! :-)
What were the scots doing in this timeperiod anyway?
More on that during the next episode. :-)
Hello, these are excellent. Where is the next episode? @@KingsandGenerals
Loving these Anglo-Saxon and Britannic history! However; I’m still curious on what happened after the Battle of Targoviste.
We will cover that. :-)
@@KingsandGenerals Still Soon™ ?
Where’s the next video? Became a fan after watching these three videos on Britain, appreciate all the hard work you guys have been doing just thought there would be more to come on this subject. I’m waiting! Lol

Nice work as always ;)
Thank you, good sir! :-)

Ice Cube has nothing on us. :-)
You got that right!

Kings and Generals 👊🔥🔥
Love your videos on medieval Europe, especially Britain. 👌
Thank you, there will be more!
Scottish and ancient Celtic battles please
There will be a few Scottish battles by the end of the year.
Yes please I want to see the Celts.
*Especially the time period when the Scots had ambitions of being a European power, and when the French befriended the Scots so they could surround England.*
What about the Norse Gaels?
Best Mish mash ever.
Thank you very much! We'll see, I guess, there are some moving parts in this question. :-)
Annnnnnnnnnd there were Normans.....
There will be. :-)
That soundtrack absolutely killed it.
Thank you!
Æthelflaed was a Real Life Khaleesi! Damn she was Badass! Make a Movie or Series about her Damn it!
We need more historical movies. :-)
Thanks. There was a copyright issue with the music.
