Hehe, this still says OffThRanch
nope, i dont buy anything based on what any youtuber is pitching. the shilling has gotten out of hand on youtube.
At what point does a cave become a mine?
I'm telling you, I still think your cave system connects with the one at Cave Without A Name. They're too close for it not to be a thing.
Matt, is that the parun 2 on your hard hat?
You should build a A frame over the hole with a winch on it.
This is a good idea
I was gonna comment this exact comment!!
my thoughts exactly
That plus dig a backdoor entrance tunnel (which was already started) so you can get down there without going straight down the hole
Tri pod, winch, and double hook up. Winch up to the top, then hook up to other shackle on backhoe, dump
I guess it's getting close to needing us again 😂
I think they are already at that point
Yeah
I'm ashamed at Matt and the team, not one single alice in chains pun or reference, Tisk Tisk.
Soon. Why are you not there yet?😋
th-cam.com/video/nFmobE3LMZM/w-d-xo.html
i am a fiber optic contractor, matt you guys need to rent a hydrovac with some extra hoses. worth it.
True statement.
My thoughts exactly this is going to take forever, turn it to a slurry and pump it out
you could clear some much dirt out of the hole in a fraction of the time.
I’m thinking the same, but every hydrovac company I’ve ever used has cheap laborers that probably shouldn’t be liable in that hole. 🤣
I mentioned this the first video. It's painful watching him use buckets
I never would have thought that I would sit for hours and watch people dig with their hands and fill buckets to fill a barrel over and over again, but there is something mesmerizing about it. I cant wait for the next one to see what is down there!
You already have the most expensive part needed for a small safe crane, your backhoe. The attachment made by Reaper: EX-FRW-100 (no affiliation, I've just seen them on forestry jobs) would swap out you current bucket with a grapple/hydraulic winch combo, it has a 10.000LB winch which should be more then enough for your current tasks. I can't tell if your backhoe has an auxiliary hydraulic line already ran (needed to run the winch), if it doesn't your most cost effective option would be to have diverter valves and quick connects added to your bucket curl lines, this would change your curl control to winch IN and OUT when the valves are diverted. It may even be worth adding auxiliary lines at some point as having a fully functional grapple would be useful for picking up debris and pulling down structures.
There are several good ideas in the comments, but I think this could be the most feasible and practical.
This comment needs more likes you're very knowledgeable great idea
I was going to say an old heavy equipment service truck with a side crane but I like your idea better. Good call.
This is exactly the kind of thing I was thinking the whole time (though I didn't know they had ready-made solutions like this).
This is a good suggestion!!
Use the backhoe boom with a snatch block and use the winch on your truck to pull the barrels up
Or build an A frame over the opening
If he connected the line to the backhoe, you would have a 2 to 1 ratio block and tackle approximately doubling the reach and not adding a second operation.
@@stevemccormick4938 That would half the reach, wouldn't it?
@@amorton94 they make winch line extensions.
Exactly my thinking
HI MATT!!! My husband and I drove over 6 hours to shop at Bunker Branding, for our 15th wedding anniversary!! We loved the store but was hoping to see you!! 😁😁 We are staying in San Antonio for a few days. We love you guys!!! 💖💖
@offtheranch
@mattcarricker
Fill up your fire suppression truck and use high pressure water to wash everything downward. There’s a drain someplace or it would be full of water. Turn the dirt and mud into a fast running slurry and just work your way down. You’ll still have to haul out the rocks the previous person used to fill the hole, but the dirt/ clay will be gone. Then you use a small crane with a gravity claw to pull up rocks.
I find it amusing that so many creators struggle to come up with "new and creative" content, meanwhile Matt's over here being like, "I'm gonna dig a hole" AND THE CROWD GOES WILD

Matt, you have a backhoe and several vehicles with a winch on them. Afix a block and tackle pulley system to the backhoe and use a winch to raise and lower the bucket.
I have recently started watching all of your videos. I’m retired military and the retired Deputy sheriff. Only saying that because I have met a ton of people. Matt you and your family are great. The relationship between you and your wife should be a model

Weld a receiver hitch onto the backhoe and use the big winch you already have for the trucks. Then weld a hoop to hook a block and tackle onto the bucket.
Then you can use the winch to raise/lower the bucket the extra distance. That way you dont have to buy any new equipment and are still able to dump it the same way you have been.
"Look at these fellers diggin in ma toilet" - Ghost of a 1930s rancher.
Mount the winch you already have to the backhoe bucket. Winch for up/down. Backhoe for left/right.
This is the way, and the cheapest answer.
Exactly what I was thinking
This, or mount the winch on a truck and put a pulley on the bucket
@@mikekeller9022 This would limit your ability to swing the bucket to drop the barrel.
Put a hydraulic winch ran from skid steer with that boom
You should build something over top of the cave like a coal mine. If you seen videos of them, they usually have an elevator you could do something like that with the bucket, and do like a pulley system with a winch
These are my favorite videos right now. LOVE THE CAVE DIGS. MORE MORE MORE!!!!!!❤❤❤
If you're not able to do anything with the cave for some reason, you should put plexiglass on the top and then put lights in the cave. It would look really cool.
great idea!
There is this one guy over in Kentucky that just so happens to have a crane truck and he basically just uses it to break tables🤔
This, Matt literally already has a friend with a crane truck. I bet Scott would want to dig in the whole.
The whole what?
@@stevenheberling2451 The whole hole.
Put an A frame off the front of the ranch trunk, mount it to the front frame tow points, brace it with 2" ratchet straps to the headache rack. Bumper winch, through a pulley at the top of the A. Can be removed or installed in a few minutes when needed.
You should get a window type air conditioner hook up a big hose to the outlet vent and run it way down the cave that would:
1 provide fresh air
2 provide cooling air
3 provide dry air
When below ground level you can get low oxygen levels because you don’t get enough air exchange.

Only sum people r like that manely the younger people
Matt, if you’re trying to figure out how to get people in and out of the pit, consider looking into how cavers ascend and descend ropes. Systems for vertical cave sections have existed and are quite robust and safe! If you build the A-frame other have been mentioning you can fix a line and rappel/ascend the rope to get in and out quite easily. This could be much more cost effective and safer than pulling people in and out with a winch or crane!
Broo continue, the world needs to know what's down there.
Next cave shift should be prep work top side, clearing debris and stepping down ground level to a clean rock surface with vehicle access. Then wet work... jet wash first cave level completely. Get it back to grippy rock. Drill lower shaft wall for step irons to bolt to, forget about ladder hassle in that workspace - step irons are in manholes because they're the best solution there is!
Came here to say just about all of this, so I'll just upvote your comment. There's a lot of loose debris right around the opening of that hole, and that big rock falling in should have been a sign that they need to clear it all away. Between that and mounting a hitch receiver on the bucket for his portable winch, he'd have a full video of prep work for the next cave video.
**MATT** Weld a receiver to the tractor bucket and put that mobile winch you made to work! Run the control cord to the tractor operator and power with those SB50 connectors you have along the bucket arm. Winch it up then pull it out with bucket. Less than $100, you have everything!
I was going to say basically the same thing, need a winch on the end of the bucket arm. Winch it up then swing it over, bada Bing!
I said the same!
I had the same idea as well, haha. Who needs a crane truck when you have a backhoe and a winch.
@@jessehutson9437 and a truck i know some who lift up electric transformers into light posts just a rope a pulley and his ol toyota
Caving . Was lucky enough to grow up in an area with big caves. Most of them have been blocked off because of people disrespecting them. A few fools ruined it for everybody else..
You could do a daisy chain, bring the bucket up to a stop and then bring the bucket down and attach it to a shorter rope on the bucket, that won’t make you have to max the crane out when you lift it up.
Come for the Mansion, stay for the Resort, become obsessed with the Cave!

I love that Jenna just goes and hangs out with the guys, while playing in the dirt....
Don't we all just want a Jenna of our own? 😂
It’s her job to
Jenna is there for a reason, adult supervision! lol
Build a frame over the cave entrance, rig up winch and pulley system, when the blue bucket gets up to the top, use the backhoe to pick it up and dump.
YES, that would be a fairly SIMPLE and fairly INEXPENSIVE way to do what needs to be done.
A-frame over the hole and use a capstan hoist mounted to the hitch of the truck.
I was a lineman in a former life. You should be able to find a line truck that the power company uses to set power poles. They have outriggers, a 2 or 3 stage boom and a winch for all your lifting needs. Shouldn't cost near the price of an actual crane. Love your videos and KEEP DIGGING!!!
I'm planning on going in to the lineman trade next year when I graduate do you think I should go to a community college that offers a class or get some experience trimming trees or something?
@@carterterry1451 get hired on as a groundsman with a company. @@carterterry1451 Linemen in our area are hired through the electrical union. You must be a union electrician (or at least apprentice) before they will consider hiring you.
Hey Matt. I'm a powerline tree trimmer. We rig trees all the time. You could put a pully on the bucket of the backo right above the hole and then use a winch on a truck to redirect the rigging rope and pull the barrel up that way. Then spin the bucket away from the hole.
How are you going to rotate the back of arm when you have tension on it
Backhoe arm
@jameskersey8613 Tie the tail end of the rope off and move the bucket in the same direction as the winch. Then set it down and release the pressure. They could also use t tag line tied to the bottom of the barrel to pull it if they don't want to move the arm of the bucket.
this is the way.
@jameskersey8613 move the block towards the winch, bucket will go down as you pivot towards or pull in as you pivot .
When you look up from the bottom is like the POV of a bullet passing through a silencer. Call it baffling cave.😂
3 Pipes in a pyramid shape with a snatch block at the top would make easy work of lifting stuff out of that hole with plenty of room for you all to move around it. Or even two pyramids either side and a beam across the pit. [edit] Ooooooh! You could use your trucks winch to pull up something basically like an elevator. LOL, Jurassic Park Vibes.
I would consult your cave friends for suggestions. Second, I would have a set of walkie talkies for the above cave person and in the cave person, for safety reasons. Third, more cave videos! Thanks Matt

Oh we would be all up in those tunnels if we were there, yall are getting so deep in that cave!
Abandoned Cave is my favorite series on YT right now. Very happy for another installment.
Matt get your local high school welders to build an a frame winch platform to go over the cave opening. 19:28
Or maybe use a professional welder, just in case.
this ^
I think an A Frame would be the best option.. Though youd then need to figure the logistics of emptying the barrel.. But I guess they could just use the rig on the backhoe still but much shorter..
@@SliceyMcHackHack that'd be the way. rig it to the frame, unrig it from the pulley, rig it back to the hoe and unhook it from the frame
Matt, they MAKE winch attachments for the front of skid-steers (Robby Layton has one he's used in several of his videos). Why couldn't you buy a winch for your skid steer (it would come in handy at times), figure out how to also mount that boom you saw online with a pulley at the tip of it and you'll have a "portable crane"? It's a possibility. ;)
Easiest way. Hook snatch block to backhoe bucket, run a winch cable from back of pickup.
Or ask Diesel Brother's for help they have a lot of resources and equipment..sounds like a great Collab video.
Heck yeah, lift and dump the bucket with the Blackhawk!
That would be great video!!!!
Lol said the exact same thing
Yep, thats a good idea. They need content, you need a machine with longer reach. I bet they have something laying around.
th-cam.com/video/nFmobE3LMZM/w-d-xo.html
1. Build a level concrete platform at mouth of cave.
2. Bolt in a gantry crane. Permanently.
3. Wheel barrows to move smaller buckets of dirt.
4. Keep gantry crane in place to move people and supplies in an out.
I like this. I put a huge long post about what to do, and this is it in two short sentences. You can lower people in a man-bucket after you find the big showcase room.
Second this motion.
No Steel across the opening and then a mechanical pully with hydraulics
@@tomatobrush3283 What do you think a gantry crane is?
Was thinking Model #: WB241339
MPN #: AHS-8-15-14
Adjustable Height Steel Gantry Crane, 15'W x 8'7"-14'1"H, 8000 Lb. Capacity. Bolted to the ground, but with the low speed of a winch. A 5 gallon bucket line and conveyor could move a greater volume of material faster, if you can keep it constantly pulling buckets out without being at risk of rock fall.
this was awesome guys, so looking forward to more cave antics :) brilliant content
Thanks Paul!
hook a snatch block to the backhoe bucket. Position bucket over hole, use truck to pull rope lifting barrel towards bucket, move backhoe bucket to dump barrel. Rinse and repeat. No hole is too deep
This is exactly what I was thinking too
Giggity.
what about a winch bolted to the backhoe bucket?
@@Selendryle that works also given the winch has enough spool and a reliable brake. there are many dirt cheap options available before obtaining equipment that has a 50 ton payload simply to hoist a 55 gallon drum.
th-cam.com/video/nFmobE3LMZM/w-d-xo.html
Matt I dunno if you'll see this or not, but you have everything you need to continue removing dirt. Set the backhoe boom up above the hole. Attach a snatch block pulley to the bucket on the boom. Use the winch on the flat bed to lift the bucket up and down. Easy peasy.
This is the best one I heard yet
My exact thoughts!
I would think the winch would need to be attached to the bucket. If the winch is attached to the truck and ran through a pulley you loose the mobility of the backhoe arm. When you move the arm side to side the barrel will move up or down without moving the winch.
@@davidrucinski Attaching the winch to the bucket would require running real every cables to the bucket to power the winch. I def think it might end up being a two man operation, but it could def still work, using the swinging motion of the boom. Might have to re-rig once above grade.
Came here to say the same thing!
gotta get yourself a water well pump truck! support jacks, telescoping hoist, lean back 8-10 feet on flat ground
the skid steer with a boom and wench on it seems like a very practical solution. Some wenches have remotes so one person could operate the skid steer and the wench at the same time.
YEP.
Matt, get a vacuum excavator in to get the dirt out and an a frame over the cave with a winch from Mikeys truck to get the rocks out.
Easy as.
Rent a vac truck and a water truck. Hose down the loose dirt and vacuum it up with the vac truck.
This guy knows whats up
I’ve been commenting this on the cave videos! Except most vac trucks have water tanks for hydro excavating so an extra water truck wouldn’t be necessary.
I was thinking the same thing. If they wanted to get it done, a hydro-vac would have done it. Less content that way though.
Still a lot of big rocks.
Pump truck with the river as a water source is perfect for that.
What you need is a vacuum excavator with a strong arm and about 60ft of hose. Should be able to rent one from your local equipment shop or Vermeer dealer.
I'm just excited! please continue
Through all the years of growth on this channel, I must say that Matt, Mikey and Jenna as a trio are some of the best, most genuine and organic people to watch

28:58 HYDRO OR AIR VACUUM EXCAVATION! It’s a massive vacuum for sucking up rocks and dirt inside of a hole. Rent yourself one of those and I bet you can get this thing done in a single day. You’ll just need a jack hammer to break up the bigger rocks.
Hope this comment gets noticed this time!!! I've said this almost every video!
I've thought about that off and on, bit it's a good idea. You'd still ja e to deal with the larger rocks, but it would really speed up mucking out the clay and soil.

The same way you have a second loop for the top, make one for the first level in the cave. Pull out of the deeper hole. Set down. Reset attachment. Pull out easier.
I am so happy the cave digging channel has gotten back to its original content!
Build a wall around entrance to prevent stuff falling back inside and make it easier to secure the site. Then back-fill to that wall so you don't have to be so far back. Then you could build a small shed ( 10'-x10' ) over the hole. Then use an A-Frame and a pulley and winch to bring material up.
You should bolt a fire ladder to the side of your second drop it would make the up an down much safer for temporary use .... Matt just man up and but the good full sized crane truck your going to end up getting the use out of it building the buildings on the resort and I'm sure you will find many many many uses for it like getting that cave dug ... just my humble opinion on the matter I believe if you take the risk with getting a good full sized crane truck it will be definitely worth having for many projects an just think then you have a reason to go get a crane operator license 😀
get a Gradeall #10, jib attachment with a hydraulic winch. The boom extended and has a winch operated from the drivers seat.
Havnt seen someone Dig up the Past like this since my ex ! 💪
Take your fire hose setup down there and blast the bottom wash the dirt down the cracks then you can hear if the water splashes down deep
Matt make a overhead crane like the ones hanging in shops but with legs all you need is 5 i beams so once you pull out of hole you can slide it off the side you can use winch instead of the standard chain pulley it would take a day to build on the gooseneck and slide it off over the hole with backhoe and bobcat
Scaffold? Like, build a scaffold frame? Have a winch on wheels, so you can bring up , move it to the side, that way could have a separate winch for the person working? Then you can re use the scaffolding for other projects? Like a tiered seating system somewhere, tables that even kentucky ballistics couldn't break etc
Have those welder buddies come and build a steel frame over the hole with an I beam that extends over your dump area. Make it be like an overhead crane for a warehouse on tracks that has an electric wench that pulls up and down. Then you can have different attachments for the bottom like a man basket, you soil bucket, and whatever else you feel.

I was also thinking a livestream would be fun even if I just got to pop in and out throughout the day
You should build a pole barn above the hole.
A good idea might be to build a strong 3-5point winch to pull the bucket out, then you can hook up the backhoe to the bucket and pull it away from the hole after unhooking it from the winch.
That or use a snatch block system from a truck winch to pull the bucket out of the hole. Only issue with that is you will need to build a sorta guide so that way the bucket doesn't get stuck again.
Love the project ✌
You might even be able to mount a winch to the backhoe, granted if there is any mounting points
I suggest paying for a full property lidar scan. It'll show you cave entrances. Might be one with easier access to this system.
Holy crap…. Could you imagine how much that would cost though to do whole property there…. Or at least obviously just the accessible area
Lidar scanning drone prices have dropped drastically in the few years and you can get a lidar scanning drone for under 12k now. Can hire out the scan for $300-$400 an hour and that high flat area could be scanned in a day.

Love ❤️ the caves!
Jenna at 36:49 “I’m gonna start cussing”😂😂 she seems like a fun person to have around while playing in the dirt with the boys 😂 their antics always crack me up
Many said A frame, but i would say boom + A frame. Essentially, you build the A frame near the hole (with the legs bolted to the ground) and have a piece of healthy, girthy rope under to have a pole that can swing over the hole and to the side. When you lift stuff from the hole, you have the pole stuck on the ground, preferably to another bolt so it doesn't move, then you unhook it and use mechanical advantage to swing the weight over the side on a hand pushed truck to reach the pile.
Alternatively, go full mine style and have a framer build you a wooden track for a winch pulled ore cart that doubles as lift.
Thats how the pyramids were built so altho yourcave is a much bigger project, it might just work... ❤😁❤
Electric winch on the excavator bucket
Something like the opal minors use in Australia would be perfect, a ladder track with a motorised bucket on it..
Attach your spare winch to the back of the backhoe bucket. You can then move the e bucket over the hole and lower it to the needed depth. Once filled you'd still be able to raise the barrel to the back of the bucket and dump the barrel as you have been.
these guys are great.

Matt you are not a quitter! If the cave keeps going, then you gotta keep going!
you could make a platform around the hole out of fairly thick diamond plating so you can have a platform to stand on as well as seal off the hole to make it less dangerous for when you're not around, would also make it easier to get in and out, as for getting the dirt out of the hole you might need a crane/winch attachment for either a skidsteer or something else that can pivot a boom up and down directly over the hole as well as reel in a line to make it as efficient as possible to dump.
Lifting rocks for hours will definitely build Carriker!
