In this video we will install a CPO (control panel overlay) and side art set on our Dragon's Lair game. We will use Rapd-Tac on the side art which is some amazing stuff that will help control bubbles when applying.
    Topics covered:
#1 - Removing a Control Panel from an Arcade game
#2 - Stripping an original control panel overlay (CPO) from an arcade game using paint stripper. Sanding an arcade control panel.
#3 - Painting an arcade control panel.
#4 - Cleaning and sanding dirt and rust off of Wico Joysticks and leaf-switch type arcade buttons
#5 - Applying a control panel overlay (CPO) on an arcade game.
#6 - Installing a control panel on an arcade game
#7 - Installing side-art on an arcade game using Rapid-Tac wet method.

Using the 12 pack of soda to hold the screws before spraying them is a great idea. You are quite literally "thinking outside the box" on that one John.

Always work top down and from the middle out when applying large vinyl stickers like that. makes the application MUCH easier.

Just dealt with that CPO residue when I was removing the old Road Blasters CPO for my Marble Madness. The laminate pealed off and left the same gunk that you dealt with. I started by trying Goof Off and Goo Gone, but in the end brake cleaner ended up working the best, so it was funny that you mentioned it. I'll have to try using that stripper on a future project.

Well done sir. Exactly the kind of advice I need for when I restore my first machine. I have a teenage favorite of mine in Namco Assault that I bought at a Pinball and Arcade show last June. It needs a CPO graphic and side art badly. The CPO is not delaminated like your Dragon's Lair so I'm hoping to avoid some of the chemical. The plan is to get this thing looking a little better so I can bring it back to the same show this June. The machine is mechanically sound and I've turned it into a combo Assault/Assault Plus. As far as the Arkanoid conversion (Jungle Hunt) my son bought, well let's just say I don't think it could survive another 70 mile trip. I was begging him to spend an extra $50 and get the Chase HQ. Anyway, thanks for your videos.

OH...MY...GOD!!!! That side art is frikking AWESOME!!! It is so bright and colorful, and really leaps off the cabinet! It's almost surprising that the same people who gave you that, also did the CPO. Don't get me wrong, it looks great compared to what you had (which was essentially nothing), but it just doesn't have the same "WOW" factor that the side art does. Nonetheless, that machine looks amazing, and I'm really looking forward to when you put the additional monitor on it. I had completely forgotten about that feature! AAHHHH, I just want to jump right through my computer screen and start playing that game all over again!!!! Great job my friend, as always!!!! :)

  • @boomer2095
    @boomer2095 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Wanted to watch this in 2021 since I just bought my dragons lair mini replicade and wanted to see how authentic the side art is. I remember when the Japanese went the next step and had a generic cabinet that owners could easily switch out the marque for a new game and switch out the PCB and add/remove controls needed on the new game. The problem is it never took off in America, since we are nostalgic and get attached to the wood cabinet and the art that was as important as the game itself.

Awesome job and looks great! I have applied a few decal side art appliques to my machines but wasn't aware of "Rapid Tac" but will be ordering some soon. I picked up a large Rubber Roller that I purchased at a Home improvement store that is used to apply laminate to counters and it worked perfectly for me when I applied side art.

I know this video has been out a while, but I just saw it! :-) Just a little tip... Try not to move the Dragon's Lair while on, it could mess up the LaserDisc Player's alignment. What I find works well on overlays like this is to start the adhesive where the buttons and better yet the carriage bolt holes are. I'll actually trim out a couple inches of the backing from right around the holes. Then I'll place it with buttons and carriage bolts, then press down the exposed adhesive portion to lock it in. After that just go from the middle out each direction with the remaining backing. Works great. Just a little trickier to position without sticking to the panel. If you only expose 1 - 2" of adhesive it will "float" suspended by the remaining backing until you press it in place.

John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
I Build and Maintain police vehicles, we often deal with trying to slap on stickers onto weird angles and curves.
While i admire your skills in maintaining these old beasts, I cannot say I'd recommend the way you slapped the control board sticker on. I highly recommend a plastic scraper, this will allow you to lay the board down so you can gently apply it. This way you do not need to stretch the sticker with your hands in some awkward fashion.
Never wear jewelry when applying stickers, you'll scratch the sticker or end up making ugly lines.
      Mere critique :)
I also had a question for you:
Do you know if there are still any CRT manufacturers out there? I'd like to be able to order a new CRT monitor, but it's been a downright pain to find any new ones.

John at my home town arcade in Hudson, Ohio in the early 80's we were fortunate to have a Cliff Hanger laser disc game at the arcade prior to it closing down. I was ok on it and could get to the section of the game with the ninjas in the tunnel with memorization and actually remember one high school kid bringing a spiral notebook so he could write down every joystick motion in the game....

one of my favorite side arts is rtype II. i had to google it to remind me what it looked like since i only saw it once. but it really stuck with me how serious the sequel was. a giant mechanical face covering the entire side.

here's what the side art looked like. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-Type_II#mediaviewer/File:R-Type_II_flyer.jpg. yeah i know that's the flyer but that was also the sideart as well. now that's badass.

      @theimortal1974 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Joshua Fraim apparently that's the picture of the first boss of the game. that's a bit disapointing. i always thought that was like the big boss of everything. though it makes sense since the first game had the first boss on the side. still looks badass up close like that.

John, I've had good luck with bolts through the side art by cutting an "X" where the hole is, instead of just punching the bolt through. Also, if you put some grease on the underside of the bolts (crisco w/e) it'll slide on the vinyl instead of gripping.

So I might be jumping the gun but at point: 1:01:34 . side art.
One thing you could do is remove one bolt , slip in a short bolt from the inside to act as support-peg. Do this for all bolts on one side. Add the side_art and you can still pull the pegs from the inside of the cab. Just a thought. I hope my description makes sense.

Right now, I'm building an arcade machine, and I'm even putting my own game in there. I'm going to do what the Fix-it Felix Jr. machines did and put a computer in there with my game on it. I have been looking into getting another arcade cabinet and then replacing the control panel with a two button one. I'm also trying to replace the bezel, side art, control panel art and marquee, all of which are custom made. Do you have any tips?

I'm no expert, But I think if you put washers under the bolts on the side first. It would keep the bolts from twisting the side art. Maybe take one out and take it to the hardware store with you to find the right size. I would hope you could find one that's no bigger than the head of the bolt. Just a thought.

Ahh shoot man, do the side art again because you were right, it really is unfortunate that one of the bolts went through the guy's nose, and it's too bad that the other one went through some of the logo outline. That should've been the main consideration for where to put the sticker (trying to match the bolts up with the most plain background that you can).

When you where cleaning the control panel, why didn't you do it outside.. do you not have a hose to sprat it off instead of using paper towels? I mean the smart choice is obvious

Good job! I'm not sure if you know this because you don't seem to own any movie LD's (You should consider getting some, though because they're awesome. :P), but do you know what happens if you try to play a CAV side from a movie Laserdisc in a Dragon's Lair or any other Laserdisc game machine? And also, you really don't need to bother to clean the disc, as LD's are VERY scratch resistant (I used to have a really badly scratched copy of Back to the Future, and it played perfectly.)

Did some checking on EBAY after you got the dragon's Lair John, the Space Ace disc runs around 30-60 bucks on the low end $300 was the most expensive but you know EBAY.

John do you think you will eventually make a game play walk through for Dragon's Lair? I have Dragon's Lair and Dragon's Lair HD for my iPad but haven't spent much time playing them yet and could use some help. I liked hearing how you and your buddy would gamble $1 a game on high score.

Right now I am really bad at the game. Still learning. I hope to get better and actually figure out how to finish the game. If i do, I'll make a video for sure. But, I'm a long ways away!

think the screen colors/tint still looks messed up on monitor. don't know what it is but something is off on it. i thought the original cpo didn't look bad. guess there is some bad stuff but it was original.why you do this with rings on? i can hear them rubbing maybe scratching stuff.
paint journey? why? i don't see any reason to paint it. it looks done to me.

If you are doing a lot of metal scraping you might consider getting an angle grinder with a brush head attachment. It'll pull rust and paint off VERY quickly w/o damaging the metal. I think conservatively you would have had this job done in about 15-20 mins tops with it and been ready to go with a very fresh surface. Nice work though and I love the videos. I feel like I can live the arcade dream vicariously with your videos.

If you are not sure about the sideart i would always go with the flyer of the game. Anyway looks like your pretty close. A lil low maybe.
BTW the flyer shows all four buttons in red and a black stick!?

    • @Johnsarcade
