What Makes Load Cell Pedals Better? A Look At The Telemetry (Fanatec Clubsport V3 vs Logitech G29)

  • Chances are you’re currently researching load cell pedals for sim racing. Maybe you already own some, maybe you don’t...but you’re either trying to justify the purchase or figure out where the performance can be found. If you made it this far and are taking the time out to read this video description then let me try and help you a little.
    Up until very recently I knew nothing other than Logitech. Pretty much every video on this channel was made using a Logitech G29 wheel and pedal set...but then I went and upgraded to a shiny new set of Fanatec Clubsport V3 pedals. I’m still getting used to them and learning how they feel but the difference is night and day!
    But what exactly has improved and how is it having an impact on my in-game inputs? Luckily, I have a known reference point and in this video I attempt to find out. My last ever run on my G29 pedals was the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland 2019 car at Oschersleben in RaceRoom Racing Experience and I had the luxury of recording my telemetry for those runs too.
    So time to fire up the exact same combo and record some more telemetry with one difference. The Fanatec Clubsport V3 Pedals.

      Thanks mate, that's very kind of you...suf 😉 although it's quite difficult to get subs on TH-cam unless you have a specific video that goes big and draws a lot of new viewers in. Most of the people who subscribed to my channel came from maybe 2 or 3 specific videos, despite me putting out over 100 videos/streams so far this year already...it's a tricky one predicting what will be popular. That also causes a lot of burnout too, trying to make videos that will be a big success. If a video doesn't gain enough momentum after 2-3 days of release then the TH-cam algorithm kind of just forgets about it and doesn't show it on people's feed anymore so it's all about how many people watch and interact in the very early days. And also if you stop putting out content regularly then TH-cam puts you down the list too 😬
      Anyway, sorry for the ramble, not sure where that came from 😅 but hopefully gives you an idea of what's involved in trying to make a channel like this work on TH-cam. Really appreciate the support and glad you enjoyed the video.

      Thanks mate 😁 glad it came in useful! After nearly 12 months of using these pedals now I can confirm that pressure memory is definitely a thing, my leg almost instinctively knows how hard to press now and it feels very natural. I might have to dig out the old Logitech pedals and give them another try just to see how they feel after getting used to a load cell 🤔

      I guess the data is still as relevant today as it was when I made this video, although a big improvement since recording is that these pedals are now rig mounted and much more sturdy 👍 I haven't recorded many laps in the past few months so it'd be interesting to revisit this again now I'm much more used to how the Fanatec pedals feel. No doubt they'd be even smoother! 12 months on and I honestly can't fault them, I still use them every day and couldn't recommend more highly 😁

    As always, educational indeed and well represented! As of the day of watching this video, I am on my third day of my new T-LCM pedals. As of today, I received a brake mod kit to help in the progressive feel to the breaking action. The info contained in this video reinforces my decision to have made the upgrade recommended by others but with visual proof. Thanks again DDF!

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome news about the upgrade mate, it makes such a big difference doesn't it? Takes a little getting used to at first because of the increased pressure needed and progressive nature of the load cell, but it'll help massively with being able to ride the brakes on the limit and avoid lockups, and therefore increase your consistency over time as well 👍

Eventually I'll upgrade the wheel too, but you sold me on the v3 Fanatec pedals. (I'll be using your link if its still active). Fabulous video and analysis! I have been playing around and spent hours modding my G920 pedals, trying a multitude of configurations. They are now mounted inverted with the break pedal on the outside and clutch in the center. I have also settled on half the rubber stop in the break spring. They are better but still not consistent so I was considering load cell pedals and your video has convinced me lol 😆.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree about the 'fake' rubber stopper in the G29/920 brakes, it was so strange to get used to at first but I could see what is was trying to emulate in that the harder you press down the more resistance there is, but in a nonlinear fashion towards the end of the travel. The problem here is that the resistance point didn't always correspond with the car in the sim, so you might be locking the brakes way before you hit that rubber stopper, or might need to slam on to even get close...it was a bit inconsistent.
      With these new V3 loadcell brakes it feels so much more intuitive, especially since the travel is reduced and the force required has been increased too. It was a little tricky at first getting my brain used to the new feeling but now that my muscles and my brain has adapted, the consistency is a lot better than before
      And, of course, don't forget to use that link in the video description if you're considering getting Fanatec pedals 😉

      Awesome stuff, glad to hear my ramblings and data actually came in useful! Can confirm the pedals made a huge difference in the feel of the driving...and something I didn't really touch on too much in this video was the feeling of consistency over time. I had a race in the classic Porsche Carrera last night and managed to save the car from spinning so many times thanks to the pedals, but also on some of my longer races I've really noticed the overall variation in my laptimes coming down too, since it's much easier to hit the same marks lap after lap.
      PS. If you *do* decide to go with Fanatec for the pedals then make sure you use the link to their store in my video description below 👍 Fanatec are pretty cool when it comes to people helping them out and have agreed to give me a split of any sales that come from this video, so perhaps I might be able to review the wheel for you too after all 😉

      A massive improvement, both in terms of feel and consistency 👍 pedals were definitely the right upgrade to make first although it'll be interesting to see if a better shifter can help me out too since I always struggle with crunching the gears when doing H pattern manual shifting. After feeling the difference between the G29s and V3s in terms of build quality and solidness, it's really hitting home how 'plasticky' the G29 can be. But then again, if it's all you've ever known then you'd have no idea what you're missing out on, right?

It was such an endearing feeling to know I was the plucky underdog, sticking it to the big boys on the super rig setups 😂 kind of like Red 5 taking out the Death Star almost. Moving forwards I think the only thing that will improve my pace would be a wheel, but the cost of a Direct Drive is **ridiculously expensive** and won't be happening any time soon.

    Very smart of you to upgrade your pedals first. Most go straight for a new wheel. The V3's are awesome pedals. Easily the best product Fanatec makes, both in terms of quality and bang for the buck. I did the same as you, I went from G29 to V3's, and now I'm using HPP PRX-SE's. I remember when I upgraded to the V3's it made the G29's feel like toys. And that's not a knock on the G29, it's a great setup, but the V3's are on another level. A piece of advice, if I may: When you are ready to upgrade your wheelbase, skip the higher end belt driven bases and go straight to a DD. I had a Clubsport V2.5 and it was definitely nice, but for a guy like you who is obviously a serious sim racing enthusiast, it'll be a waste of money you could spend on a DD. Be patient, it'll be worth it. Love the channel! Cheers!

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm quite careful with my money (probably because I don't have a lot of it really 😅) so wanted to make sure I made the wisest investment considering it might be a while until I can afford the next upgrade. The overwhelming majority of advise I received told me to get new pedals before anything else so...I did. And yep, like you say, it was 100% the correct choice!
      Completely agree about the wheel too. I'm very impressed with Fanatec so far, especially the shifter which was a very recent addition too, and I have my eyes on a Podium DD wheel but that might be a long way off at the moment. When you consider the cost of a good belt vs DD wheel there's not a massive difference so it's definitely worth spending that little extra instead of purchasing two very expensive pieces of gear in quick succession.

    I still have the cheap CSL pedals gas and brake only, no loadcell, but the travel on the brake (which is the clutch when you have the loadcell) is way larger than on the G29. Took some getting used to as I had to press way farther. Also the spring is stronger on the CSL, so when it feels like I'm fully braking with the G29 I'm only like braking 50% with the CSL. Sounds like the loadcell makes a lot of difference!

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the non-loadcell pedals it measures the distance the pedal moves, meaning that if you want to brake 50% then you move the pedal 50%. It makes sense from a numbers point of view but your brain is memorising fixed positions instead of force applied. You could gradually apply pressure with your foot and reach 50% or you could slam on hard and fast and reach 50% much quicker...you're still moving the pedal to the same position. With a load cell, however, the pedal is measuring the amount of force applied which is much more like how you would drive an actual car and feels a lot more natural. I hardly have any movement in my brake pedal on the V3s but they're super stiff so I really have to press hard to get the car slowed down, but at the same time I also have the ability to apply really fine movements by being gentle despite the amount of travel in the pedal being the same as a heavy braking zone. It's an odd feeling to get used to at first but feels so much better after a few laps 👍

    Potentiometers are like anything else, you get what you pay for. Good quality ones are still in use for many applications and load cells aren't inherently better. When it comes down to the brake pedal of a sim racing pedal tho' they are, because of the limits of the simulation, better as they enable your muscle memory to develop and that's a huge advantage over any position based system. Happily a couple of years after this was filmed, Fanatec now have the best load cell brake pedal available for under £300, the CSL Elite V2 has one of the best load cell brake pedals you can get for under a grand, and yes it blows away the their more expensive Clubsport brake pedal, even if it's got the available upgrades fitted, the clutch pedal isnt as good as the Clubsport clutch and there's no adjustment on either throttle or clutch, but those pedals are fine on the CSL Elite V2, they're well made from cast aluminium and the brake pedal is outstanding. If you're new to sim racing but drive IRL then you'll get it fast, and soon see your lap times decrease. Happy racing people.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Matias, glad you enjoyed it 👍 I ran the pedals at default when I first got them but noticed myself stiffening them up constantly, to the point now where my preload on the brakes is almost wound all the way out. I don't have the brake performance kit (out of stock in Australia) so can't comment exactly on how that behaves, but having stiffer brakes certainly helped me. I found it much easier to get to full brakes and also easier to modulate the brakes too...having a softer pedal just felt like I was lacking control and consistency.

    On the G29 you can set the deadzone of the pedals to lower the force and travel needed to get max brake force. You can do that in games settings. The downside is thatyou will lock your brakes sooner. I am curious to make the same update at some point. Do you need an adapter to use the pedals without a wheelbase?

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No adapter required, these pedals plug straight in using an USB connection and are completely independent, they show up as an additional device. I'm still using my G29 wheel and there are no issues using two devices at the same time...actually I use three since my X52Pro HOTAS doubled up as a button box/replay camera controller 😉
      About the deadzones on the G29, sure you can limit them, and that's what I was doing too. While it does reduce the travel it also reduces the force needed to get to max which is bad...you need to be super delicate on the brakes and micro movements make a massive difference. With the V3 loadcell brake, by increasing the stiffness it reduces the travel but **doesn't reduce the force** which means you don't need to be delicate. It's quite hard to explain but it feels so much better.

      You can't load a replay file directly into the software unfortunately, but if you record a video clip you can then import the video. There are then options to sync up a specific point in the video with the exact time you cross the finish line and start your lap. It's a little fiddly and time consuming, you have to record your own video, but it's a nice feature to have.

    Sorry for being so late to post but I just bought this pedal set and I’m struggling to wrap my brain around load cells.
    Are you supposed to set it up so that you cannot read the end of pedal travel? Because if you’re on the stop, you can’t add more pressure and according to the design spec, they don’t care about the position.
    Thanks

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate 👋 sorry for the late reply too! As far as I'm aware you shouldn't be able to reach the end of the travel on these pedals since the harder you press, the more the fluid inside pedal compresses and you get diminishing returns being able to move it less. You can adjust the stiffness on the Fanatec pedals too, so you reach that point much sooner if you like. Most racing cars are set up this way with very little travel 👍

    No corrections needed, it's the Shell Curve/Chicane. Nobody knows if it's a S-Section or a Chicane :D
    Way better lap you've put together. A lot less pumping on the throttle and better braking. Sector 1 has improved massively.
    T7 after Triple Left was much better. Nothing more to say.
    The Turn 8-10 passage seems to be faster like that, so it's alright (G29 pedal try was smoother though, I liked that ;) ). If it's faster, it's faster!
    Last turn seems to be your Nemesis. Have you tried 3rd gear? Works for me, but taste is different here. Common thing people do is seeing T14 as a hairpin, but it rather is a medium speed turn thanks to it's larger radius and run-off.
    I think you can get half a tenth out of that lap, but that really doesn't matter at this point (I won't get there in the near future)

    Do you have some in your or it's stock?Maybe the gap is less than you think if your pedal is not stock.
    The fisr thing you can do without spending money is sawp clutch spring with accelerator.
    It will will require more force to press,you can have better modulation.I have done it on my g27 but personaly the clutch spring is not hard enough (by lack of speed feel/car connexion,i need restistance under my feet,like you have demonstrate with your fist) but better than original gaz spring.

      My old G29 pedals were completely stock, although I'd worn the potentiometers out and had to replace them about a year ago. I saw a few tricks where you could change the springs and the rubber perhaps, but ultimately it was still using a potentiometer and not a load cell sensor. The potentiometer on the G29 is position based, whereas the loadcell on the V3 is pressure based so depends entirely on how *hard* you press, not how *much* you press. It takes a little getting used to, but I feel like my braking is _much_ more consistent now than it ever used to be 👍

      The increased resistance makes a huge difference since you don't just feel like you're stomping on a piece of plastic any more, you actually have to apply a fair amount of pressure to keep the pedals down. The way the clutch has a simulated biting point as well is great with the variable resistance throughout the travel. The fact you can adjust the force required and travel on the brakes is just the icing on the cake. Nine months on and I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever 👌

    I think you're missing the point here somehow. First of all i completely agree, that a loadcell brake is THE most important upgrade in most cases. Although a loadcell gives you a little advantage in terms of finer control over the brakes this is not the main point. The main advantage of a load cell is the muscle memory, which you stated correctly, lets you memorize specific brakeforce appliance much better than a certain foot position. So my point here is: You certainly get a little faster due to more control over the brake, but you ABSOLUTELY get more consistent and gain more trust to brake later, which is much more important in my opinion, and this is what you should've demonstrated in your video. I mean there are tons of reasons why you where faster in the newer lap, you where braking at completely different spots and in a different manner, your accelerator appliance is very different ect. This MIGHT be related to the braking, but not necessarily HAS TO. You could've done that with your logitech brakes as well.
    Maybe do another video, where you compare the braking of multiple laps on one pedal set and multiple laps of the other, to demonstrate the lower deviation.
    So, TL/DR: Don't expect a loadcell to gain you seconds right away, just expect to be able to brake more consistently and thus be able to move your braking point further into the curve because you gain more confidence.

      Completely agree about the consistency you mention, that's something big that I've noticed since racing with these pedals. At the time of making this video I was only about a week or two into using the Fanatec V3s (my first ever load cells, actually) so was still finding my feet, if you'll pardon the expression. With a little more experience though I can definitely see that my laptimes are closer together and I tend to make less mistakes due to having more of an understanding of what's going on underneath me which was much harder to judge on my G29 pedals 👍

    How much does the vibrating pedals matter vs load cell? If I get load cell minus the vibrating pedals do you think there is a huge difference or marginal?

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The vibrating pedals are a nice touch but you can definitely live without them. The key thing you're after is the load cell since this directly affects the feeling of pressure you apply on the brake, whereas the vibration is a nice feedback effect to give you a more subtle pointer. I've not been able to get it working with rF2 yet and, to be honest, once I'm driving for a few laps I forget all about it.

      With the logitech g29 there's a little piece of rubber inside the brake pedal which attempts to create some of that non-linear feel and gets progressively harder to press the more force you apply. Something which I think may help you in particular is trail braking, which I didn't really cover too much in this video. Although the pedals are stiff and don't travel much on a V3 (especially the way I have them configured) it's also quite easy to just brush up against them and drag the brakes ever so slightly, which could be super useful for the low grip skating-mobiles you're so fond of 😉 just a touch of left foot through the corner to help balance the car. On the G27s it's kind of hit and miss when you're trying to apply just a dab of the brakes.

  • @vsm1456
    @vsm1456 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I still don't quite get the reasoning behind the difference. Logitech pedals aren't "empty", they have a spring that resists your pressure, and as we know from Hooke's law, the force you apply on a spring and the distance it compresses/extends are directly related. So it doesn't matter what you measure - distance or force; if you know one, then you can calculate the other. And since there's a spring, your body can also learn what pressure you need to apply for X percent gas/brake, it's not solely distance and anything else.
    I do get why people would prefer loadcell pedals anyway: at the very least they allow for more adjustments, you can make them feel exactly how you like it, and that makes them more comfortable and precise for you. Probably the overall quality also plays its role, the more solid and reliable they feel, the more you trust them.

    • @benjimc1
      @benjimc1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also the use of the rubber insert and the adjusted firmware for the latter half of the braking force makes them great to use regarding trail braking. I will be getting some thrustmaster t lcm pedals when they are back in stock though.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The adjustment in the V3s is a big plus compared to the G29s. Having the increased preload setting which bumps up the stiffness and reduces the travel helps massively with the braking feel. That said, how that analog physical input is converted into a digital signal makes a big difference. If the V3s used a potentiometer then it would have a much more limited range of values compared to a load cell, since the pedal would only be moving a little bit and positionally there wouldn't be much variation. You'd see an even more exaggerated effect of that notchiness I noticed in the throttle through the telemetry. However since the loadcell measures the pressure applied (not physical distance) then you can get a much better range of values, despite the reduced travel...which means a greater resolution on the data and also better smoothness too. This pressure reading also stays consistent if you then decide to soften up or stiffen the pedal even more.
      I think the problem with the standard G29 springs is not that they're empty but that they're pretty weak, much like the shifter feels too. They don't provide enough meaningful resistance when under compression to provide meaninful feedback through the leg/foot so you can be left guessing a little at times. Sure an after market stronger spring upgrade can be fitted but by the time you've spent the money on these bits and installed them you might as well have spent the money on the better pedals, especially considering the increasing price of Logitech gear and narrowing price gap to brands like Thrustmaster and Fanatec.
      You're spot on when you say overall quality and solidness plays a role though, since you can really apply a lot of force to the V3s and get away with it. Infact, at the moment I can't apply anywhere near maximum pressure since I haven't got the pedals bolted down and anytime I try and stamp on them super hard the whole pedal base lifts up 😅

    • @benjimc1
      @benjimc1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DDFRacer one viable option to get that brake feel for g29 pedals is the axm true brake that srg reviewed a couple months back. Its not stupidly expensive at ~£60 and it has a much better pot to give you that sensitivity along with the shorter pedal travel. Sure its not a set of fanatecs but it can save you £100 and do a decent job from what i have seen.

    • @lingSpeed
      @lingSpeed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @vsm1 One person here gets it, lets go!
      I'm using good old G27 pot with HALF the bitrate (7bit) and it still would be "enough" precision for relatively high gamma (high stiffness) braking IMHO. It really comes down to construction. People compare properly done load cell installation to crappy "haven't put much effort into making sure it fits my rig correctly" pot brakes and feel like they spent money well.
      Also yeah load cells don't really measure "pressure" any different than pots (by changing resistance with distance), the difference is only with the stepping. Nor they provide more "feedback" than a pot. That depends on apparent pedal stiffness, which changes with pedal spring, rig strength and seating position, not with sensor tech.
      I'll buy load cell when i find somebody that can consistently outbrake me on my shitty modded half rate G27 pedals with them, hasn't happened yet.
      (Not denying quality advantages of load cells over pots, but the hype around them is just stupid.)

      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lingSpeed and this is what I love about sim racing, there's no particular one way that's right or wrong, it all comes down to personal preference. Some of the fastest people out there use Logitech gear so it's clearly good enough, it's ultimately just a matter of using it properly and driver skill...if you're good enough then you're good enough, no matter what gear you use.
      I can confirm I'm definitely not good enough so having something that's much better built definitely helps, but maybe the video should be more along the lines of 'V3 vs G29' instead of 'Potentiometer vs Loadcell' 🤔 I don't know, still working this out as I go really, I've only had these pedals a few week.
      Although I liked what you said about "making sure it fits my rig correctly" as I'm currently using these V3s underneath a cheapo wooden desk, on top of the box my oculus came in and some foam from the Fanatec box to prop the angle up a little 😂 definitely far from a rig set up. The G29s were in exactly the same position with the same setup so, as far as my own personal experience goes at least, this is as direct a comparison as I can get.

    This video is so easy to translate.
    I bought some new pedals that work in a different way, I want to show why they are better by using evidence which proves nothing other than I have become a better driver which may or may not be due to the pedal change, because of the change it can't be proven either way. Correlation and Causation are very different things.
    Muscle memory is muscle memory regardless of it being distance or pressure, none of the systems are better that the other, they simply have a different feel.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  ปีที่แล้ว

      In terms of pure data, the V3 pedals are definitely an improvement over the G29. You can see on the throttle and brake traces in the video, they're smoother and less blocky/bitty due to the better quality (and higher resolution) sensors. I was also able to modulate my inputs much more effectively. The two laps between G29 and V3 were done pretty much back to back which eliminates the possibility of me becoming a better driver between pedal sets, although that said, this video was recorded over two years ago when I had a *lot* of experience on the G29 and was still fresh on the V3s. Surely that would have skewed the data in favour of the Logitech pedals since they would have so much muscle memory attached to them? No doubt my driving has improved in the last few years, if I was to run the laps again on both Fanatec and Logitech gear I suspect the results may be even more in favour of the Fanatec pedals. Besides, if changing pedals makes me a better driver, then doesn't that validate the whole point of this video being 'What Makes Load Cell Pedals Better?'
      In terms of feel, the V3 pedals are definitely an improvement too, as the build quality is a noticeable upgrade and the adjustable springs/dampers also give you the ability to tailor the forces required to your preferences. If you press a G29 brake pedal down, you'll reach the end of the travel with a certain amount of pressure, usually not much unless you third party mod it with extra rubber inserts, whereas with the V3 you'll always be able to apply more pressure regardless of the pedal position. The upper limit on what the software considers 100% input is based on how hard you can stomp your foot when you calibrate it. The adjustable amount of travel to reach that pressure also gives you much better control over how much braking you can apply and how progressively you reach that amount.
      Managing the weight transfer more effectively in the braking zone and corner entry is the key to getting the car to stick more throughout the corners and can gain a significant amount of lap time 👍 in my opinion, based on my personal experiences from over 15 years of sim racing, a better brake pedal is the single most effective upgrade you can make.

      @@DDFRacer Hey great reply.
      It was an old video, but to me it was a new watch.
      At no point did I say it wasn't an upgrade, or even better equipment. I upgraded from logitech pedals a long time ago too.
      I criticized the evidence which was being presented as validation because it is/was meaningless.
      When you apply brake is nothing to do with hardware, if you don't brake at 100% when 100% is the easiest amount to be absolute with on the Logitech, only you can be at fault, how much you accelerate is nothing to do with hardware. you are comparing your personal performance and correlating it to the hardware. To compare the hardware the human needs to be removed.
      A more accurate better and more honest video would have been.
      I have bought this fanatec pedal set and it has given me the confidence to drive harder so I am improving my lap times.

    With so much (good) explanation you failed on the most important; how much... Because in the end everything is about the price (for some of us) .... Sorry if you reveal the price later in the video at that time I lost interest....

      Hey Luis, thanks for the comment mate 👍 I intentionally left the price aspect out of the video because it was more of a comparison between the specific performance on track than an overall product review. Also, the cost of equipment depends on where you're based in the world, which retailer you're purchasing the pedals from (also the different models available eg. inverted vs non-inverted) and can change rather quickly depending on the supply or release of new products. For example, the price I paid less than 12 months ago is now $100AUD more expensive than I can currently purchase these pedals for.

      I tried that once, but I couldn't steer the car very well 🤔

    Why do the Fanatecs look uglier than the Logitechs, lol

      Not sure sure what you mean there 🤔 I mean, I've personally never even considered the aesthetic value of sim racing pedals before so I'm genuinely interested what does or doesn't make them good looking.
